Review: Ocean State

Ocean State

Ocean State
By Stewart O’Nan
Grove Press, 9780802159274, March 15, 2022, 240pp.

The Short of It:

Only O’Nan could write a story where the murderer’s identity is revealed in the first paragraph and he still manages to hold my interest.

The Rest of It:

This is a simple story, really. Two young girls, in love with the same boy. The push-pull tension of the story is laid out slowly in its less than 250 pages. Angel knows that her boyfriend has been seeing another girl, Birdy, but in her mind, there is no other outcome possible. She will be with him and Birdy won’t be. How she gets to that decision is how the story plays out.

Angel’s younger sister Marie, reflects on that autumn where it all went wrong. There’s plenty of familial tension but it’s all a little gritty and unsavory and I had a hard time liking any of the characters. I felt empathy for Marie, having to deal with the aftermath of Angel’s actions and her losing the only person she was really close to. But if you are a fan of O’Nan’s, what you might miss in this story is the sense of place that he so elegantly builds in his other books. Other than that, I enjoyed Marie’s reflections on sisters, mothers, and life in general.

Whatnot – 04/13/22

Everett, WA map.We have news!! My son received a job offer last week for Pennsylvania. It wasn’t quite what he was looking for or even in his degree field but it’s really hard for recent grads to find work that pays living wages. It just felt a bit out of reach and honestly, the idea of him going across the country again with his cat was giving me fits.

But then, yesterday he was offered the position of Assistant Manager of Visitor Services at the Imagine Children’s Museum in Everett, WA! He and Root Beer will be headed to the Pacific Northwest soon! Not super close but not across the country and on the same coast. He is very happy. I am going to miss that cat a lot. The kid too.

With that offer, we are all breathing a sigh of relief. It’s been a little tense here not knowing how it would all play out. Now we wait to see what happens with the Girl this summer. I never fully understood my friends and their moving conversations in regards to their kids but I do now. All this coming and going and the planning that goes into it is draining! Plus, my garage is overflowing. The cat keeps trying to get out there because it’s like a labyrinth of possibilities. So many hiding spots.

I totally forgot that I finished reading Ocean State.  I just wrote up the review for Friday. It’s not like his typical books but still very good.

The other day I went looking for review copies and saw the new Kingsolver book, Demon Copperhead. It sounds so good! I did request it. We’ll see if I get approved.

Demon Copperhead

This is just a funny aside but I need a little motivation to lose the weight I gained since my surgery. So while I was driving around the other day I thought I’d motivate myself by purchasing a Penguin cloth-bound book for every five lbs. lost! They are so beautiful and I’d love to own a few. Anyone want to join me?

Penguin Cloth Bound

That’s it. My brain is all over the place. I have a work project that will require a lot of my time over the next few weeks but I am looking forward to making a dent in it.
