Everett, WA map.We have news!! My son received a job offer last week for Pennsylvania. It wasn’t quite what he was looking for or even in his degree field but it’s really hard for recent grads to find work that pays living wages. It just felt a bit out of reach and honestly, the idea of him going across the country again with his cat was giving me fits.

But then, yesterday he was offered the position of Assistant Manager of Visitor Services at the Imagine Children’s Museum in Everett, WA! He and Root Beer will be headed to the Pacific Northwest soon! Not super close but not across the country and on the same coast. He is very happy. I am going to miss that cat a lot. The kid too.

With that offer, we are all breathing a sigh of relief. It’s been a little tense here not knowing how it would all play out. Now we wait to see what happens with the Girl this summer. I never fully understood my friends and their moving conversations in regards to their kids but I do now. All this coming and going and the planning that goes into it is draining! Plus, my garage is overflowing. The cat keeps trying to get out there because it’s like a labyrinth of possibilities. So many hiding spots.

I totally forgot that I finished reading Ocean State.  I just wrote up the review for Friday. It’s not like his typical books but still very good.

The other day I went looking for review copies and saw the new Kingsolver book, Demon Copperhead. It sounds so good! I did request it. We’ll see if I get approved.

This is just a funny aside but I need a little motivation to lose the weight I gained since my surgery. So while I was driving around the other day I thought I’d motivate myself by purchasing a Penguin cloth-bound book for every five lbs. lost! They are so beautiful and I’d love to own a few. Anyone want to join me?

That’s it. My brain is all over the place. I have a work project that will require a lot of my time over the next few weeks but I am looking forward to making a dent in it.

  1. So happy your son found a job on west coast. Oh no another move for RootBeer. I think he’s happy with Chloe:). Those Penguin cloth editions look lovely!!! I love Kingsolver and did get a Demon Copperhead eGalley. Hope you do too.

Have a good week – curious what you thought about Ocean State – good but not a favorite for me.

  2. Congrats for your son! Very exciting! I enjoyed Ocean State, and am just starting French Braid. Looking forward to having a new Kingsolver to read, it’s been a while since she has had a new book. The hubby and I both have Covid. We will miss Easter, which we were looking forward to spending with the family. We just have cold like symptoms. Gives me an excuse to stay home and read.

    1. Oh no! Do you know how you caught it? I’m sorry you can’t celebrate this weekend but yes, if you aren’t feeling too poorly you will have plenty of time to read. After my surgery I thought I could read but I was so nauseous, reading made me even more so.

  3. Such great news about your son’s new job. We arrived in Seattle last night (we’ve been in Nashville) and it is SO cold! Weird spring weather up here, that’s for sure.

I’m looking forward to your review on the O’Nan book. I do enjoy his writing. I’m also eager to read the upcoming Kingsolver book!

Good luck with your weight loss. I don’t dare get on the scale after eating so many meals out this past week. I’ll get back to my workout routine and maybe step on the scale in a week. 🙂 What do you have planned for losing those post-surgery pounds? I have such a hard time losing any weight, but maybe if I gave up my wine, it wouldn’t be as difficult…

    1. My surgery weight gain was due to a combination of no exercise and my vegetarian diet going out the window. I was told that it was causing the stones. So I freaked out and just ate too much of everything once my appetite returned. My plan is small portions, more walks and distance as long as the knee holds up.

      1. Sounds like a good plan! I need to get back to smaller portions. I feel like I get a lot of exercise, but I’m stuck at the same weight I’ve been at for the past 5 years. I need to shed 5-10 lbs, but they won’t budge.

  4. Such good news about your son! Hoping your daughter ends up somewhere that makes all of you happy!

Thanks for the links to Ocean State and Demon Copperhead, they both sound good.

  5. Wow great news about your son. The NW is fun … I had three years in Seattle once … a new Kingsolver eh?

  6. I am glad that your son found something on the West Coast. It’s funny because we always hear that there are tons of jobs on the West coast…at least that’s what colleagues tell me.

I love the idea of treating yourself to a cloth book as motivation.

    1. There are tons of jobs here but they don’t pay a living wage. The average rent for a one bedroom is $2700 and none of these jobs that recent grads enter into pay enough to live here.

  7. Naturally, as I live in Pennsylvania, I’m disappointed that he wasn’t able to come here so maybe we’d get a chance to meet here on the East Coast. 🙂 But for y’all, it definitely is more convenientlny. It’s nice you mentioned that you will miss your son too… After the cat. 😉

  8. I like the idea of buying a gift for each 5 pounds, especially since I’ve put on 10. I’ll have to think of a motivating gift…. I am so excited that your son has a job in WA; the same time zone really makes a difference (says she whose daughter is staying in NY). We are also starting to have the discussions of where to store stuff over the summer, how to get things to a new apartment, etc. It is all a bit much. Have a great week!
