Sunday Matters: Steering Clear Of The Dreaded Reading Slump

sunday-matters (1)

For months now, my reading pace has been excellent. My secret is having all the books I want to read lined up and ready to go. But then, I read a slow book and my perfect little reading world began to tilt and fall off its axis. I quickly lined up a few reads to motivate me to keep going and then, those books didn’t seem all that exciting. Now, I am back to square one and working on that book line-up again. If I manage two reviews a week and keep it that way, that will make me very happy. If I can do so with great books, even better.

Right Now:

Coffee, church, youth group, a long walk. In that order. Maybe some takeout later while watching a movie.

This Week:

Very happy to report that I snagged a vaccine appointment for my daughter for tomorrow! I was worried that we would have to wait a long time since they just opened it up to 16+ but the school district worked out a deal and voila, first appointment tomorrow. Yes!

On Wednesday, our book club will meet online to discuss Anxious People which I read awhile back and enjoyed very much.

Reading:

I am currently reading Three Perfect Liars. I feel like it is a good choice to jumpstart the reading train again. It’s reminding me of the movie Baby Boom. A young professional takes a six month maternity leave only to return to her temp, sitting at her desk and working with her most important client. It’s very readable and pulls you in quickly.

I do think Northern Spy will be my next read. It was recently chosen for Reese’s book club.

Northern Spy

Also, don’t forget to enter my giveaway for Promises to Keep!

Watching:

I mentioned in one of my recent posts that we started to watch THEM on Amazon Prime. A black family moves to an all white Compton in the 50s and let’s just say their welcome is less than ideal. It’s a mix of racial motivated horror as well as supernatural horror linked to events in the past. It’s terrifying on many levels and has quite a bit of violence and disturbing imagery. We just finished it. I heard that there will be another season but I don’t know how there could be. What kept us watching is the acting.

Grateful for:

  • Good coffee. Need I explain? I wish we had more indie coffee shops around me though. The local chain leaves a lot to be desired IMO.
  • Having passionate kids. My son is heading up the planning for a memorial for Kristin Smart. She disappeared 25 years ago. They just arrested two people and the anniversary of her disappearance is coming up. She was a Cal Poly student so he, and a group of others have been planning for a memorial in her honor. It will be a collection of art works, letters, etc. He was recently in the news if you’d like to read more.

What do you have planned today? What are you reading that I must know about?

  1. Isn’t that a great feeling when your kids can get vaccinated? Both of mine got their first shots this week and I’m so relieved.

I remember the Kristin Smart case. That’s wonderful that your son is keeping her memory alive all these years later.

    1. The Smart girl has been on everyone’s mind because of that podcast that’s been focused on her for the past year. My son of course heard of her since he now attends that university but he really got into the podcast and this memorial is technically a project that he pitched for school too. It’s been a challenge for him to coordinate it all with the family, the city, and the school. It’s moving forward though and he is getting a lot of support from the community.

  2. Appropriately, while typing up this response, I’m listening to “California” by Lana del Rey. 🙂 I have to say that your kids…your kids…have such ood hearts. Like you and your husband. You should be proud and deserve that wine to toast to them too…and to snagging a vaccine appointment for your daughter.

    1. My kids are very passionate about a lot of things but any kind of injustice at all, really irks them to the point of action, usually.

That wine that I finally picked up was very good with my Impossible pasta dinner and fancy cheese. Later this afternoon I take the kid for her shot and then it’s breakfast for dinner.

        1. They are having cheesy scrambled eggs, hash browns and blueberry waffles and I am having hash browns with hollandaise sauce and gluten free gluten free waffles. I love hollandaise sauce.

  3. I have been in a book slump for 3 weeks. Ironically since I received the first dose of Moderna. Reading slumps are unusual for me as I work in a bookstore. Wondering if it’s related???

  4. Having books lined up to read helps me as well, although I am terrible about planning ahead like that–even if it’s only a couple days. It’s a work in progress. And like you, slower books, particularly if it is one I am struggling with can cause me to stall in my reading. It sounds like you’ve settled into a good book though with Three Perfect Liars.

I hope your daughter’s first vaccine dose goes well! I am glad you were able to get her in so quickly for it.

Enjoy your book group discussion of Anxious People.

I just realized it is almost noon and I think everyone else is still in bed asleep. My daughter might be up playing–sometimes she does that on Sundays before coming down to say hello. But I’m sure my husband is still asleep. It’s been nice to have some quiet time to myself this morning. 🙂

I hope you have a great week!

    1. It is really nice once your kids are old enough to entertain themselves. I’m sure your daughter has loads to do in her room most mornings before coming down. Heck, I hardly see my daughter unless she needs the car for something. She lives in her room.

  5. I am so proud of your son for heading up the memorial for Kristin Smart, that story has captivated the area for so long. I do hope they’ve arrested the right people so that the Smart family can have some closure (not that you ever really can with the death of a child).

I have heard good things about Northern Spy and have it on my radar so I look forward to seeing what you think of it.

    And, yay for the vaccine!

    1. The Smart case was riddled, from day one, by mis-management by many agencies. They supposedly have DNA evidence now which led to the recent arrests. I hope all that was handled properly.

  6. How great about your son being so involved. And, it’s great that your daughter has snagged a vaccine appt. as well. My daughter & her husband are fully vaccinated as are we and my son and DIL are 1/2 way done. Hope your week goes well.

As for books I like to have at least half of my months reading plans focused on a list at the start of a month and then I wing the rest as the mood moves me.

    Have a good week.

    1. My son’s work on the memorial is quite involved. Fielding all those donations and offers to assist can take a lot of time but he’s very excited about the community involvement.

Vaccine #1 for kid #2 later this afternoon. Cannot wait!

  7. It’s great that you got a vaccine appointment for your daughter! You must be so proud of your son, too… I remember following that story years ago. Bravo for him taking action!

My reading has slowed way down this month, but I think it’s mostly because I’m reading a longer/slower nonfiction title. (The Splendid and the Vile, which is really good!) I’m pretty happy if I can keep pace with a book a week, but this will take two. Think it will be worth it though…

    1. I can see why The Splendid and the Vile is taking longer to read but I do love that author. It will pay off.

Yep, today is the day. After her classes I will take kid #2 down to the pharmacy for her appt. Hope she does okay with it. I did not factor in a full week of school afterward.

  8. You have such great kids! So proud of them! I hope you can keep up the reading pace. Have you thought about the new King book as an addition to your pile?

I am still reading poetry as you might have guessed, but I’m also in the middle of book festival stuff for others and my own video reading needs to be recorded this week!

    1. I have thought about the new King book but I am trying to read Green Mile for that read along too. Falling behind there as well.

  9. I know you feel relieved to have gotten an appointment scheduled for your daughter.

Do everything you can to keep the Reading Slump at bay. I tend to pick short books or audios to keep me going.

    Have a great week, Ti.

    1. She got her shot yesterday. She had some pretty bad arm pain but declined Tylenol today although she did attend classes online instead of virtual so just keeping an eye on her. She has Pfizer and we all had Moderna plus I am not sure how different reactions can be for her age group.

The reading slump is being battled daily. I just picked up The Push and it’s highly readable. Blowing through it. I need more books like it. If I had some reviews scheduled ahead of time it would help. I fell behind when I read Vera. Zzzzz.
