2012: DNF #2 (The Red House)

The Red House

I waited a long time to get this one from the library but at about seventy-five pages in, I found myself really hating these characters and scrabbling to keep track of what the heck was going on and who was saying what.

Richard is a doctor and rich. He invites his wacky sister and her family to spend a week in the English countryside with his family (also whacked). Sounds like the makings of a perfect novel but the stream of consciousness narrative really turned me off. Much of it is rambling but there are moments when the story started to get good, only to get lost in the rambling again. THAT infuriated me.

I was going to tough it out, but after a day of brooding, I decided to just put it down for good. Why bother with a book that’s just not doing it for me? Add another DNF (did not finish) to the pile.

The Sunday Salon: Been a long time…

Sunday Salon

It’s been awhile since I posted a Salon post. I think I missed a week or two since I tend to stay away from the computer on the weekend. I spend so much time on it for work that when I get home, I can’t stand to be on it. Needless to say, I missed you!

The weekend has been nice. The horrible 110 degree weather of last week said goodbye (for now) and left us with sunny skies but cooler temps. Last night we hit a concert in one of our local parks. It was Led Zepp night. I never listened to the band growing up because I was more of a Mod-Punk listener, but I thought they were pretty good. We had a picnic and just watched The Boy receive texts and then wander off to say hello to his friends. There was a cloud of teens hanging out by the playground and I swear The Boy was called at least five times to go over there.

Today, we are just cleaning up around the house, watching movies, listening to music and reading. Later, we will indulge in a little Chinese food and probably watch more movies. It’s maybe a little predictable for me, but I can’t complain. I just love hanging out at home.

For those following my Jerk posts. The Boy found out last night that three of the players from the team, also his friends, quit right before a big tournament and left the Jerk hanging. I am hoping this guy is gone by the start of school and a new coach comes in. Then, maybe The Boy can try out as planned.

Anyway, I am off to do more laundry and finish The Bird Saviors. It got a little strange so I am not chunking away at it as I normally do.

What do you have planned for today?
