Sunday Matters: Apologies

Sunday Matters

My poor blog has taken a hit these past few weeks. Lots of reading going on but with school starting back up, reviews are pending. I think I will be in better shape next week.

Right Now:

I am a in a strange place right now. I am excited about the school year but already exhausted. Somehow, I find myself full of purpose which adds to the exhaustion because I want to do ALL the things. Why couldn’t I be this motivated at say, age 20?

This Week:

Classes start this week at the university and we are expecting over twelve thousand freshman this fall. This is a record number for us. There will be a lot of hustle this week but it’s an exciting time too. I love seeing those shiny new faces.

On a personal note, my daughter ended up getting the part of Ross in Macbeth. This is new for her. She’s been in many musicals but never a dramatic play. They are doing a gender switch for some roles  including Macbeth. Rehearsals ave already started. Rehearsals and auditions for Annie start September 9th so on with the shows, as they say!

Reading:

I am attending a book discussion this week for Judas by Amos Oz. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I read it. I really had no idea what direction it would take. It was an interesting read for sure. Hope to have the review up soon.

Also, my daughter’s competition theatre team is doing Jesus Christ Superstar and the musical this year is Godspell. It was fitting that I read a book titled Judas while all these show decisions were being made. I see a trend, no?

Watching:

Last week Fear the Walking Dead aired a pretty good episode. Finally! Other than that though, just watching Seinfeld. I need humor in my life.

New Things I’ve Tried:

I’ve been floundering around trying to figure out meals for this household of mine because with everyone home at different times I need easy, simple and quick. Stuff that can be put together quickly and often without my help because I am not always home to cook either.

Those delivery meal services would never work for me because my husband likes large portions and seconds and it just wouldn’t be cost effective for us. So, I’ve been buying meal bases and then adding things to them. Trader Joe’s has fried rice packs in the freezer section that cook up quickly and I just add shrimp or chicken. I’ve also tried their mashed cauliflower and added grilled steak for a quick meal.

I need to do more of this. Plus, I got some good meal planning tips last week from Bryan’s wife Kim. I hope to try them out soon.

Grateful for:

I am very grateful for my mail order pharmacy. We don’t take a lot of meds in my family but there are a few we do take and it’s just so easy for me to order them online and have them be delivered for free. My Kaiser is pretty nice but who wants to go there to pick up a bunch of germs with their meds? No one.

It’s almost fall! What are you looking forward to this fall? I am looking forward to King’s new book!

  1. I wish I had been more motivated than I was at 20 too.

I’m always amazed at the numbers you throw out: 12,000! That is four times the size of the town I live in. 🙂

Congratulations to your daughter. Break a leg, E.

I’m finding lately we need humor too: we just binge-watched two shows on Hulu, What We Do in the Shadows, which was great, and This Way Up, which also was good, but not as great as the first.

Oh…I’m glad Kim could help you with your meal planning. She’s very regimented and if I can stick to mostly what she fixes, it works for me.

This fall, I’m looking forward to the cooler temperatures, which for us already are arriving.

    1. I can really blow your mind by our total enrollment. 54K. 12K was just freshman! I was feeling fall in the air but I jinxed it. It was very warm this weekend. Today, too. Not horribly so.

        1. It certainly feels like it today. We can’t leave the parking lot for any reason for at least three weeks or we won’t get a space when we come back. Gotta pack lunches every day too or deal with hour long lines for food. It’s nuts here.

  2. I know what you mean about being more motivated when you were younger – I feel the same way.

We used to get our prescriptions mail order but I’ve switched to a local pharmacy where the pharmacist knows me by name and works with me. It’s a little more trouble but I like it better.

  3. Congratulations to your daughter!

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar Broadway production in the 70’s when I was a teenager. I’d like to see it again!

I get my prescriptions from a family owned pharmacy. I know the owner and like Kathy said, she works with me.

    1. We don’t have any private pharmacies near us but I have Kaiser I have to use Kaiser anyway. I like the idea of a family owned pharmacy though.

  4. I just don’t know how you keep track of all the shows your daughter does; they seem to overlap! And what a crazy busy time between work and the start of school. We are in full swing as well and so far so good.

    1. They do overlap. In a week Annie and Macbeth and competition musical will be in full swing all at the same time. She wants to add singing lessons but seriously, we can’t even finish driver’s ed.

  5. It’s neat that your daughter is in the play Macbeth, wow. Perhaps she will do more plays? August has made me behind too in reviews. We will catch up sometime.

    1. I am not sure. She’s done so many musicals that this is a real departure for her. We shall see. August was a blip on my radar. Seriously. I had my first Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew yesterday and posted about RIP 14 so I am all ready for fall.

  6. Gender role reversals in Macbeth will be interesting — funny you should mention that play since it recently appeared in a poem I wrote about gun violence.

I hope your daughter enjoys her time in a dramatic play.

Meal planning has never been my strong suit, but we have 6 people here and varied tastes and pickiness. It makes it hard. Nevermind the dietary restrictions.

    1. I haven’t made much progress with my meal planning. I keep running into problems like tonight. I had planned to cook something but it’s back to school night and my daughter is performing early so there goes dinner.
