The Sunday Salon: It’s a Soup Kind of Day

My Reading

Happy Sunday! Today is all about relaxing because I made the mistake of going to the mall yesterday to do a little shopping. Good lord! I have no patience for that stuff anymore. People were friendly. Actually, I was surprised how friendly the store clerks were given the amount of people they were assisting, but I was in a foul mood and it just got worse from there.

I hate how regular products are repackaged for Christmas and then marked up a dollar or two just because it’s Christmas. I wore the wrong shoes which made the entire experience more painful and I only picked up one gift, and I was there for over three hours. That’s right. I got overwhelmed with the glitz and the volume of everything. Stores so full of merchandise and people, that I literally could not walk from point A to point B.

I love LUSH, but their stores are too small to have more than ten people working the floor. I need to go back at night, during the week to pick-up what I need because I could not even get to the shelf. But everyone was as happy and perky as can be when they asked me no less than five times if I needed help. Not their fault that I had a case of the grumps.

The holidays, gotta love them.

Oh, and it’s been so cold here!! The mornings have been about 30 degrees and last night, when I left the mall a gust of wind took my breath away. It was so cold. It sort of felt good after being in that stuffy mall but I could not get to the car fast enough.

By the way, I forgot to buy coffee creamer while out so this morning I am without creamer again.

What am I reading?

From the photo above, you can see that I am still reading The Abominable. I love it and now I am just prolonging the inevitable, the end of it. It’s a great adventure book but given that it takes place on Mount Everest and the characters brave below freezing temps, I find myself shivering and reaching for my blanket every time I read it. I wonder if it would have the same effect on me if I had read it over the summer months?

What am I cooking?

At the request of The Teen, I am making Potato Cheese soup tonight but guess what? He won’t be here to eat it because he just offered to work a holiday dinner event. That kid is a “yes” man. He needs to learn how to say No. I am hoping to make a big enough batch to eat it more than once this week. Tonight, we’ll pair it with a nice, leafy salad to round it out.

What am I watching?

Well, it’s that time of the year. We watched Deck the Halls with Matthew Broderick and I may watch The Family Stone later today. I really wanted to watch White Christmas with a group on Twitter yesterday but the timing didn’t work for me, given that I am on the West coast.

The other day, I heard about CBS airing the lost Christmas episode of I Love Lucy along with her Italian movie episode where she stomped on the grapes. Remember that one? Well on 12/20 both episodes will air in color? Will you watch? I prefer B&W but to see the lost episode for the first time? Yes, I plan to record it. We will be at Disneyland that day so I will have to wait until the next day to see it.

  1. Ah, we had a busy weekend…got our tree, supported the volunteer fire department with our purchase…got our yearly ornament, got some foodstuffs, did a little bit of shopping…and now we’re planning to decorate the tree this evening!

  2. I’m good at the mall this time of year only if I’m not needing too much or if I’m just browsing for ideas. Even then, I can’t stay for long – it’s just too claustrophobic. I do like to support my local stores but this year I’ve done more online shopping than ever. Hope you find a better time to go!

  3. I keeping putting off a trip to the mall… it really tries my patience. Will probably go (alone) during the day on a weekday and hope it’s not too crowded. The soup looks so good!!!

  4. I’m sorry that the timing didn’t work out for you. 😦 It would have been nice to have you there. It was a bit earlier than it usually is…for some of the East Coast folks.

As for the cold, it seems to be cold across the country right now as I’m reading posts from those in California, Texas, Minnesota this afternoon and the common theme is cold from temperatures to freezing rain to snow. We’re getting a combination of all three here in Pennsylvania – yaaaay? No, not really.

Hope it gets warmer for you soon and I think that soup will help you all.

  5. I am cluełess…I didn’t even know there was a lost episode! It is freezing here…snow all day! It was wonderful! We are having baked tacos and chocolate cake for dinner! I hate shopping…I can’t believe you spent that much time there!

    1. I seriously think I checked out or something. I just didn’t realize how long I had been meandering around the mall until my husband called me. I had no breakfast or lunch and I think I went a little daft in the head!

  6. Freaking mall. I started out the other day with a good attitude…mom and daughter day…but I quickly got bitchy. So the daughter suggested we drop our bags at the car, eat lunch and regroup. That worked for about 30 minutes. I’m just not cut out for it anymore. THEN I had to go to a Christmas party! That cheese soup looks so good. I think it might cure me of any bad feelings, except that the high today is 85. I could use a chill.

    1. The high by you was 85 yesterday?? Good lord. That is too much.

I like the idea of shopping during the holidays. The decor is festive and this time around, all of the clerks were super happy to be working I guess and I had the weather working in my favor but I just didn’t have the patience for it. Everything seemed too cheery and bright. My online stuff is taking FOREVER to arrive and I ordered the stuff a long time ago. I can’t seem to find the other items I need and now the girl signed up for X Country and needs shoes and spikes and gear.

At least you got to see a movie or two.

  7. My mom made loaded baked potato soup yesterday and brought me a big bowl last night. Guess what I’m having for lunch at work today?? Yes ma’am! I can’t handle malls anymore. I order online and go to stores during off times, for sure.

    1. I have the soup for lunch again today. I am hoping it’s a little better today. It seemed a little too much like mashed potatoes yesterday.

  8. Holiday shopping for me is both fun and exhausting. It really helps if I know exactly what I am out looking for. I do love the white twinkly lights! We were just in Chicago where it was really cold so I thought I would do well when I got back home to SoCal, but I realize I always dress wrong for cold weather here. 🙂 And now you’ve made me want soup. Potato leak or lentil sounds good. Or maybe black bean chili and cornbread….

    1. We have a lovely outdoor portion of our mall that has firepits and the like and it’s so pretty around the holidays. If I could just sit there, and not have to get up, I’d like it. LOL.

      I need a personal shopper.
