Sunday Matters: A Break from the Fires

Sunday Matters, a latte on a wooden tray against greenery.

A couple of days ago I finally unpacked our GO bag after the Hurst fire was completely contained. And then, this past Wednesday the Hughes fire blew up very close to me. We had so many amazing fire crews still here from the Palisades and Eaton fire so they did really quick work getting it under control.

This was my view as I raced home.  We are to the right of that plume. Whew! It wasn’t looking too good.

On the road, plume of thick smoke from the Hughes fire.

Right Now:

I am teaching today in student ministry. Yay!

This Week:

My book club meeting was cancelled last week due to the evacuations so maybe it will be rescheduled for a night this week. Not sure yet.

Reading:

Between reading The Brothers Karamazov and working on my student message, not a whole lot of “other” reading has been going on. Brothers continues to be very good.

Of course, books are always catching my eye no matter what I am doing so I recently shared the last 18 books I added to my TBR pile.

Watching:

One of you suggested Lockerbie on Peacock and I am riveted. Boy, is it heavy though. It’s about the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 back in 1988. It stars Colin Firth. He is so good in it.

Grateful for:

  • The fact that we managed to avoid that Hughes fire which technically was just over the hill from us.
  • That I get to attend summer camp with the students this year! I missed last year, because you  know, BRAIN surgery.
  • Bibles studies that I have been doing with some online church attendees through YouVersion. If any of you would like to do Bible studies with me let me know.
  • Quick lunch catch-ups with friends.

It’s hard to avoid but what a week we’ve had. So much rescinded and lost. We knew this would be the case. I did not truly expect the Constitution to be removed though. Yes, he removed it from the White House website. Um, hello…

  1. I keep meaning to comment on your Sunday Matters’ graphic, Ti. I love that coffee image!

I’m so relieved that you didn’t have any problems with the Hughes fire. What a stressful time for Southern California! And now you’re going to have rain, which is good and bad, right?

Wait. What? I didn’t know about the Constitution being removed from the WH website. This week has been awful. “Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” Gotta stay focused on midterm elections!!

    1. Yep. The Constitution was pulled down from the WH site on day one. I think it’s rather funny to think that the orange pop tart thinks removing it from the WH website means it does not exist. Uh, it’s all over and posted in many places.

We got just enough rain to put out those final hot spots.

  2. Ti, every time I hear more about new fires in CA, I think of you and other bloggers that live there. So scary. Glad that you did not have problems with the one you mentioned. Hope you get enough rain to tamp things down a bit (but not too much). Take care and I like that you are still enjoying your student ministry work and also that you are doing online Bible studies with others. Prayers for those efforts. God is always with us.

    1. We got a nice smattering of rain. Not too much. Just enough I think.

My message went pretty well. The students were talking about it, which is the end goal. If it sticks with them then I have done my work. Hosting services online doesn’t sound very engaging but it can be. I have been slowly getting the online folks to chime in and join me outside of the chat room. I’ve met some really nice people. We need more of this, and less of the orange clown show.

  3. So glad you & your home are Okay. How scary! So glad they got the new fire under control. Man, it’s been a lot to take in with everything. Let us know if you get rain there.

I want to see if we get the Lockerbie series here. It seems intense. I remember that disaster in ’88 — awful.

    1. We did get some rain. It was supposed to be three days of rain and we got one, steady, not too much. Possibly half an inch. I am glad it wasn’t a downpour because those burn areas just can’t take much more.

I really don’t remember the Lockerbie bombing at all. I was twenty and deep into school and work but I guess I didn’t watch the news too much. The show. It’s very good but really intense.

  4. I suggested Lockerbie and am so glad you’re enjoying it. I look forward to hearing what you think once you’ve finished it since there are so many revelations!

I was thinking about you and the Hughes Fire and am so glad you didn’t have to evacuate. We had pelting rain and hail today!

    1. We had a good amount of rain last night. Steady, I’d say. It’s cold here! We were supposed to get rain today and tomorrow too but the sky is clearing and the sun is out.

Yes. Lockerbie is very good. Such powerful performances.

    1. We got a little rain yesterday and we are supposed to get more today and tomorrow but the skies are clearing and the sun is out. It’s cold!

  5. I am glad you are safe and didn’t end up having to evacuate, Ti. Hopefully the areas getting rain aren’t badly impacted further. As grateful as I am for the rain, I know it’s not always welcome in areas hit by fire–at least a lot of it at once.

I am glad you will be able to attend summer camp with the students. That is definitely something to look forward to!

I know many of us aren’t surprised by the direction things are going–we expected this when the election results came in–but it’s still shocking in its own way. And no less disheartening.

I hope you have a good week!

    1. You are right, nothing is shocking with this clown show of an administration but the speed in which it’s taking place is a tad alarming.

    1. I work at Cal State Northridge as a Senior Communications Consultant but I teach sometimes at church for student ministry. The Hughes fire was right over the hill for us. A change in wind direction would have been bad. Very bad but we were very lucky.

      1. I was a high school teacher for 25 years and then a high school librarian for 12 more before retiring. I am also very involved in my church, though my focus is mainly adult ministries.

        1. I love this. I also host online services for my church. I tried something new and I am having a good time building community and getting them to visit the building! We have some members from the UK which is kind of cool.

  6. So glad you get to go to the summer camp with the kids, I know you love it. That fire is close. I am so glad that the fire crews are so effective there. The WH and chaos is going to continue….its a campaign of overwhelming the populace so he can sneak things through because people are too overwhelmed to pay attention, but I think he underestimates people.

    1. Yes. Camp is a hoot and I really missed going last year.

This administration is a clown show. The new communications person just outright lies and name calls. Typically Trump bully.
