This is very early in the year for us to be experiencing these warm temps. It feels like summer! My brain has a little catching up to do. I am not yet thinking about summer reading lists although I know a few of you have already started to think about your lists. This warm weather does have me thinking about BBQ’d food and fresh fruit though!
Right Now:
We have our normal church activities today. We take two separate cars to church because right after the service, I head to youth group so I won’t be home until after 1pm. Makes for a late Sunday walk with the pup but she usually understands as long as it’s not too hot! If so, we will have to wait until it cools off. She doesn’t mind a pre-dinner walk either.
This Week:
No big plans or appointments this week. The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is virtual this year and I have two fiction panels I hope to catch at the end of this week. One is with Shuggie Bain author Douglas Stuart and the other will feature many fiction authors. They both conflict with other things I have going on but I am hoping to pop in for some of each.
Reading:
This past week I reviewed We Begin At The End (loved) and Vera (was ok).
I just finished Liane Moriarty’s The Husband’s Secret. Any time I need a book to grab my attention I reach for Moriarty but I think I have read nearly everything she has written now. She has been my go-to author during this pandemic. Excuse me Ms. Moriarty, can we get a new book please?
That leaves me pondering what to read next. I have a review copy I need to get to but it comes out in May so I will probably hold off. Maybe Shuggie Bain even though I know it will be a heavy read. Or, possibly Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood. Have you read it? I bought a beautiful copy of it a couple months ago.
Watching:
We are trying to find a new British show to watch. Preferably a crime drama. We have viewed many clips but haven’t settled on anything yet.
Last week we watched the new Kong vs Godzilla movie on HBO Max. It was not great. No story, but the fight scenes were good. I just remember growing up with the old B&W Godzilla movies and the newer movies miss the mark, in my opinion. A lot of the movie theaters that just re-opened are showing it though so I suspect it will do well.
Grateful for:
- Warm weather fruit. I am not much of a fruit eater until the warmer weather hits. Grilled peaches with vanilla ice cream cannot be beat.
- All of the vegetarian and gluten-free options that restaurants offer now. Makes eating out so much easier for me.

Have you watched Poldark with Aiden Turner? Loved it so much we started watching Being Human with the same actor.
Being Human involves a werewolf, vampire and a ghost living together. My husband thought I was nuts but now we are on season 3. Great, great show. I’m really liking BBC stuff

Loved Cats Eye, read it years ago. We are watching a British Crime show called New Tricks and enjoy the subtle humor, it’s on Prime. We also loved the Scott and Bailey series – also on Prime.
We are fairly new to Prime so I have not seen those two shows around, as of yet. I am a horrible browser for shows. I spend so much time browsing and so little time watching. Ha!
We thought Line Of Duty on Netflix was really good.
Line of Duty looks pretty good. I had not seen that one while browsing.
We enjoy Endeavour when we’re in the mood for British crime drama…The Coroner was good… Broadchurch…
Broadchurch was great. I wish there were new seasons of that one. We are watching THEM on Prime right now. It’s pretty horrifying in the way the movie Get Out was. Stephen King was talking about it on Twitter so we tuned in. GREAT acting. Very hard to binge though because it’s super intense.
Your reading is on a roll! I think I will listen in to a few of the LA Times Book / Author talks. They should be good. You know I have not read Cat’s Eye by Atwood which is surprising. I have read quite a few of her books. I would read it with you … but there’s so many on my radar right now. My mind is like on overload, ha. I hope your weather cools? Nine Perfect Strangers and one much older title are the only two I’ve not read but I do own it.

I didn’t realize the LA Times Book Festival is on this week, I’ll have to look into it and see if I can fit anything into my schedule.
Some of the LA Times events start this week and go into next week. Interesting offerings. I kind of like how easy it is to access these events. Normally you have to get a ticket to see the panels in person and there is always a limited supply.
Sounds like you’re having warm temps too. We had 80 degrees yesterday. We were super busy all weekend with a 2-day long course swim meet. I am exhausted, but it is back to work again.
Being Human was a great show; I saw that Diana recommended it. It’s probably one of the only shows I’ve binged. We are watching The Irregulars set in England on Netflix — it’s got a supernatural angle, but it is like a detective show with crimes to solve. It’s been interesting so far.
Yes, our temps have been very warm but today it’s gloomy and currently 45. We are set to get some rain but not enough to make a dent in this drought.
It’s starting to feel a little bit like summer here, too, but I’m not ready for it yet! I loved Cat’s Eye when I fist read it ages ago. Picked it up for a reread early in the pandemic and found it to be much darker than I remembered, but still a good read. Hope to reread The Robber Bride before too much longer… those are my two favorite Atwood novels. Enjoy the virtual book festival!
I totally forgot about The Robber Bride. I liked that one when I read it ages ago. Of course, I remember nothing about it and it was pre-blogging so no record of my thoughts.
I am still very much in spring mode and fortunately the weather in my small patch of the state is too. It’s actually a little cooler today than it was the end of last week. I thought perhaps we would get some rain, but the sun is finding her way out from behind the clouds again. Oh well. Wishful thinking.
I hope you are able to get time away to attend the panels you want at the book festival. As convenient as virtual is, the timing is poor for me in terms of work interference.
Have you settled on a book to read next? I was hoping my current read would move a little faster, but it’s been slow going. I hope to get in some good reading time later this afternoon though and perhaps will make some satisfactory progress.

A friend from Chicago and I made plans to meet up at the LA Festival of Books long ago, but something came up and we didn’t get to go. Maybe I can go this year…virtually.
We have been watching David Letterman on Netflix. It has been…interesting. And surprising.
I wish I had something to recommend, bookwise. I’m floundering a bit.
