First Book Of The Year – 2021

First Book 2021

It’s that time of the year!! Sheila is once again hosting First Book and it’s something I look forward to every year. Readers love the anticipation of a good read, don’t they? And I love the idea of starting 2021 with a good book.

Visit Book Journey for details but basically you select a book, take a photo of you with the book, and then email it to her. She includes it in a photo collage and off we go!

Here’s what I’ve chosen:

The Overstory by Richard Powers

  1. Too bad I didn’t know before I sent Sheila my pick. I bought Overstory last year and still have not read it. I started the audio way back but, I decided I wanted to own a copy and read the print. Hope you enjoy it.

  2. Oh Ti, that’s a great pick … my sister has been trying to get me to read The Overstory and I still need to read it but it’s like a 500 page commitment right? I will think about my first book pick !

    1. The paperback copy of The Overstory weighs in at 512 pages. I don’t shy away from book length as long as the story holds. Hope it does.

  3. Each year I mean to do First Book with Sheila and then I forget. I think I feel pressure to pick my first book, but maybe this year I’ll do it.

    1. The first book of the year has always been a big to-do for me. Sheila just made it more formal by creating an actual event. I have done it for about three years now. I enjoy it and really, it’s exciting to pick that first book. Join us!

      1. My only hesitation is that I am a round 2 judge for the CYBILS so may have my first book prescribed for me this year. But, if that starts a bit into January, I’ll definitely do First Book.

  4. The Overstory is a book I loved. I’m crazy about Richard Powers anyway, and I love books about nature, and after seeing him speak in Houston…I had to read this. Hope you enjoy it. Be warned: it is a LOT about trees.

  5. I haven’t yet selected my book to start the year with. I was thinking Circe, but then superstition started creeping in. The Song of Achilles was my first read this year–and do I really want to start the year with another Miller book given how this year turned out? Silly, I know. I’m not even really that superstitious. LOL Becoming or Being Mortal is also tempting me . . . I still have time to decide, right?

I hope you enjoy The Overstory!

    1. Being Mortal is excellent but perhaps, not the right book to read while so many deaths are being reported due to COVID. Just watching out for ya! It’s excellent though.

      1. I had that thought too after considering it. Being Mortal probably isn’t the best choice right now. I appreciate you looking out for me. 🙂

  6. I’m thinking of starting the new year with The Promised Land but not sure yet. I’d like to see if I finish my current read by then – it’ll put. me in the right mindset.

  7. I had this book from the library but only got about 1/2 way through it before I had to return it. Five weeks later, I was finally able to finish it. Not a great way to read a book like this one.
