Sunday Matters: Are You Ready?

Sunday Matters

It’s hard to believe that another Christmas is now behind us. It came in like a steam roller. So many of us were exhausted and just not ready for it but here we are.

We had a wonderful Christmas. We spent time with family, we took a nice walk in the park, I made a really good prime rib dinner, and then we headed out to see Mary Poppins Returns which was charming and magical and a perfect movie to see on Christmas.

Are we ready for 2019?

Right Now:

I had to check my phone to make sure today was indeed Sunday and it is! Today we are hitting Knott’s Berry Farm. It was kind of a last-minute decision because it’s my son’s only day off but we are looking forward to spending the day together.

This Week:

The kids have their own plans for New Year’s Eve which feels weird. The Hub and I have been invited to a party nearby. We won’t stay late because The Otter Pup gets nervous when fireworks go off but it will be fun. I am going to bring Sloppy Joe Sliders.

At the end of the week, I’ve got to take my daughter for a consultation with the oral surgeon to have her wisdom teeth extracted. We have used this surgeon before with my son and he’s really good but trying to set a surgery date will be interesting with her schedule.

I return to work on Tuesday, 1/8. It will be a dark, dark day.

Reading:

Becoming by Michelle Obama. You’ve all heard it’s great and it is. I hope to get the review up before 2019 hits!

Watching:

I’ve been watching the Murphy Brown reboot. It’s pretty good. I recorded the entire season and I am almost done with it.

We watched Bird Box on Netflix. It’s based on the book of the same name. It’s different in some places but still possesses the same level of suspense as the book. Have you seen it?

I didn’t get to see all of the movies I wanted to see because our DVD player was not working right. And my TV, the old one that we have, will no longer work with Netflix at the end of January so we will be forced to get a whole new setup soon. Kind of exciting but also a big pain.

New Things I’ve Tried:

I was so over buying things that I haven’t really been able to try anything new. But we did hit a museum we haven’t been to before, the Hammer Museum. Unfortunately, part of it was under construction so we didn’t get to see much but hey, I can mark it off my list.

Grateful for:

I am grateful to have a little bit more time off. My vacation has gone by so fast and it took me so long to decompress. It’s really made me second-guess how I’ve been living thus far. Something has to change.

How did the holidays go for you? What’s your plan for NYE?

  1. I’m with you on not knowing the day or date right now. We still have company so the house isn’t in order and, to be honest, it’s beginning to get to me. I think we’ll stay in on New Year’s Eve. I usually go to be early if the fireworks aren’t too bad.

    1. We ended up going to a NYE party but left at 10 so we could be with our pup. She gets nervous around fireworks if we aren’t home with her. But it was so cold that night, some guy blew off two firecrackers and called it a night. The pup was fine. We did stay up until midnight though because both our kids were out and I wanted to hear from them after the ball dropped. But those NYE shows are so cheesy now. No more Dick Clark. Sadness.

  2. As ready as I ever will be for 2019. 😊 We’re going to a neighborhood party…well, it will be us and another couple. It’ll only go to about 10, because even then, it’ll be pushing their bedtime. Us? We’ll be up…I’m sorry about your work. Hope it will h
    get better.

  3. Happy (early) New Year! I am mostly enjoying the new Murphy Brown as well. I won’t say it’s brilliant, but I do enjoy the political commentary. We had a nice Christmas as well with family visiting from the UK.

    1. From my memory, I recall the old Murphy Brown to be more caustic, witty, etc. This one is a little softer but I like it. She’s still making points and of course and her digs against the current administration are frequent and timely.

  4. Glad you loved Becoming. I don’t think I could have ever been as supportive as Michelle was in some circumstances—3 mths in B to finish his book. Happy you had a nice Christmas and time off. Ours was nice as well.

    1. Did you read Barack’s first book? I couldn’t get into it. I hope I can get into his new one when it comes out. Michelle’s had so much good stuff in it. Very inspiring read.

  5. You have another week off! Time to rest and restore your energy. We have done nothing but read and watch TV and play word games. I can’t be near crowds right now and when I am out I hear lots of coughing. I am starting to knit again because I am really getting bored! Sigh! I was all set to finish my scarf today and I lost a knitting needle!

    1. I don’t really remember how to knit. I remember loving it though. A lady that lived near in Hollywood taught me some basic stitches but I never kept up on it.

Right now I am making stuff for the party we are going to and a pasta and grape salad for the party my daughter is going to. And…we are watching Haorders because that’s what you do on NYE.

      1. We had reservations for dinner at 7:00 but I don’t feel that great so we cancelled. Sometimes I just don’t feel like eating! Today is one of those days…I just want to shower and get on comfy clothes and read and watch tv.

  6. I have no idea what day it is either! The holidays have really thrown me off this year. As for New Years Eve, I’m hoping to be asleep before midnight since we’ll be hitting the road early New Years morning to drive to Florida. Hoping to see the new Mary Poppins movie shortly after we get there. Glad you’re enjoying Becoming. I’ll get to it sometime in 2019!

  7. I’m in the “what day is it” phase of my break, but it’s coming to an end far too soon. Good luck making some adjustments to live and schedules and stress in 2019. I think we could all use a reboot in that regard somehow. Happy New Year to you and yours!

  8. We had a good holiday and hosted family on Christmas Day and also yesterday with family gift exchange. It was very nice. Glad it’s over though. Ha! As to New Year’s Eve – well, we’re definitely homebodies. We’re going to an open house for a family at our church that had a 10-year-old son who was operated on and recovered from a brain tumor this last year. Such a wonderful thing for him and his parents. He hasn’t had a seizure since. Lots of prayers went up on their behalf. They are having the open house as a thank you to those who supported them during their stressful year. Anyway, we’ll attend, go to dinner, and then get home before all the hoopla begins. It’s been a good year for us and we’re grateful. Enjoy your time with your kids and the rest of your time off!

    1. That’s such good news about the boy. I think it’s so sweet of his family to hold an open house too. I hope you have a great time and that you are safely tucked away back home e once the ball drops. We really won’t be out late if I can help it just because of my pup. She wasn’t feeling well the other day either but seems just fine now. She hates the loud noises though if we aren’t around and it will be so weird to have both kids gone. Hmm.

  9. Glad you enjoyed your Christmas! I did too. I went to 3 Christmas parties and then spent Christmas day with my daughter and her family and then my son and his family. I have to work a few hours New Year Eve and my daughter wants me to go to her annual NYE bonfire/potluck but I have to work New Years day so I’m not sure I’ll go. Besides, my dog and 2 cats don’t like the fireworks either which makes me want to be home with them. Hopefully this year won’t be as loud as the last few years. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time off.

  10. Sounds like your family got to spend some good quality time together. Wisdom teeth are a pain. I’m in the midst of the early oral issues with my daughter….she now has her expanders in for her jaw. Hopefully she won’t need braces after this, but I doubt that. 😦

    1. I hope the need for braces passes her by. My son had to have two sets due to a cross bite. My daughter only had the one set and for a short amount of time but it was just as expensive. Her wisdom teeth are coming out on 3/29. Two days before spring break.
