Sunday Matters: Say Hi to Mickey

Sunday Matters

As of this moment, my son is on a flight headed to Orlando for what we hope is an experience of a lifetime. The Disney College Program promises to be many things and it’s all very exciting. He was assigned to recreation at Typhoon Lagoon but it’s being refurbished so he will be temporarily reassigned. Right now, we have no idea where he will end up!! He finds out on Monday.

Right Now:

Just letting it all soak in. A tiny piece of me wants to tear his room apart because it is such a disaster. Deciding what to take and what to leave was difficult. As you can imagine, it’s quite a mess.

Oh, and his sister is already taking over his bathroom.

This Week:

We are in production week for The Music Man. Two weeks of shows but we’ve done this so many times I think we have it down.

The cast list was posted for Oklahoma! She will be in the ensemble and a ballet dancer. I am not familiar with the show so I am not sure what a ballet dancer is doing in Oklahoma! but I guess we will find out.

Other than shows, there is life group for me and volleyball practice for her but she’ll be missing her tournament on Saturday because of the show.

Reading:

I NEED to finish Seven Days of Us. It’s good but this last bit of it is a slog. If I can get through it, my next book will be Nomadland and The Book That Matters Most.

Watching:

I watched two episodes of that new show 9-1-1 and guess what? It’s horrible. It’s from the same guy who does American Horror Story and even features some of the same actors but the writing is simplistic at best and the acting and production quality leaves a lot to be desired. It is definitely not as good as Emergency! from the 70s. I am dating myself by mentioning it but I was a young child when it came out!

Making:

I made curry and rice one night, some pasta with olive oil, garlic, Compari tomatoes and loads of cheese and then the rest is like snack stuff. Avocado toast is what I have most days.

Grateful for:

The book club I belong to. We met recently to select our books for the year and it is always a good time. The list will be posted under the Book Club List tab soon. This club has been in existence for over nineteen years. More like twenty, really.

Your turn. What are you reading right now and what are you looking forward to this week?

  1. Best of luck to your so ! Big and cheese xciting deal! I just picked up Nomadland from lunch Barry yesterday and hope to read it soon. I have another NF which a bookgroup member recommend d called, Why I Read, a Serious Look at the Pleasure of Books- Wendy Lesser

    Have a good week

  2. The ballet is in the dream sequence after Laurey takes laudanum. This is all before the barn dance, after she accepted Jud’s offer to take her to the dance but realizes she would rather go with Curly. It’s dark but interesting.

It’s too bad she didn’t get a larger role. I still think she would have been amazing as Ado Annie!

Good luck getting through this week and the next few months! I didn’t touch Connor’s room after he left, even though it too was a state of disaster after the rush of finally leaving. At first, I couldn’t do it. After a while, I didn’t want to do it because I didn’t want to disturb his things. It has been cleaned up since then, but mainly because he did it himself when he was home over the holidays.

    1. The kid actually managed to clean out his room… kind of. He put a lot to the side for me to give to the homeless shelter so it’s all washed and going there tonight when I work the dinner. He’s moved in. Has his temp assignment, ESPN Wide World of Sports. He seems to be figuring it all out okay including transportation.

    1. Yeah, I don’t like hardly any of the characters in Seven Days of Us which is probably why I am having such a hard time finishing it.

  3. Uh oh…he is off to Disneyworld! Will you go see him? You have to!
I thought the same thing about 911…it’s horrible…but …did you watch Gianni Versace! It totally grabbed us…Den more than me but it is fascinating. I can’t remember what we ate this week…oh…yes…we had a yummy baked pasta…a sheet pan supper of chicken sausages and peppers and sweet onions…we could eat only half for dinner so Den scrambled it with eggs for breakfast today. Last night we had these huge sandwiches for dinner…turkey, cheese, lettuce and mayo on this amazing grainy seedy bread from Weggieman’s…I love Saturday night sandwich suppers. We had pizza and French fries one night, too!

I am reading Slightly South Of Simple…beachy, Southern and good! Have a great week!

    1. Your food posts and comments always sound so good. I have gluten free lasagna today for lunch which is okay. It’s pretty good.

  4. One of my high school workers (that is now in college) is also at Disney for the semester. She is at Animal Kingdom.
i just read Need to Know by Karen Cleveland. It’s getting a lot of buzz and I loved it. I think a lot of it is because I grew up in the 80s and anything about Russia and spies totally calls my name.
I can’t wait to see what your book club picked for the year. (As if I need more book suggestions for myself).

    1. My club’s list is a little different this year. A lot of non fiction. I will post it soon. Waiting for the books to be assigned to months.

  5. It’s always an adjustment when the kids move on to the next stage – tough on the parent but exciting for The Boy.
I didn’t care for The Seven of Us. i couldn’t connect with any of the characters. I have Nomadland on my night stand too. I am currently reading The Island, my first Hildebrand. So far, the story is not grabbing me, seems like a been there done that type of read.

    1. I am so close to finishing Seven Days of Us. I really need to finish it because I have three books that have to be read immediately.

I feel weird without the boy in the house. The dog was moping today.

  6. Off to Disneyworld! How fun for him! Have you guys ever been to Disneyworld? It was a favorite of our back in the day. Typhoon Lagoon is a fun water park, but you’ll have to let us know where he is assigned in the interim. I see you’ve already heard about Oklahoma and where the ballet segment occurs. I was thinking hard as it’s been a long time since I saw it. Good that others knew. We watched about 10 minutes of 911 – and then we decided that was a big ‘no!’. LOL

    Have a good week!

    1. We’ve been to Disneyworld once. We didn’t hit any of the water parks though because it was October and silly me thought it would be too cold. It was 85 with 80% humidity. I guess he will be starting at Typhoon in March when they reopen. Right now, he has been assigned to the ESPN Wide World of Sports. He said the apartment he chose was recently remodeled so he is fairly happy with it. Waiting to meet his other roommates. Six guys in a three bedroom pad.

    1. It feels a little weird. Like he is about to walk through the door. He is all moved in now. He still hasn’t met all of the roommates. I guess they all have different check in times.

  7. I’m still on my first print book of the year. It’s good but I just can’t seen to want to read. I’m still stuck on audio’s I guess.

Can’t wait to read where your son will be assigned. I’m going there March 8th & 9th with my two sons, dil, and my two oldest grandkids.

    1. Typhoon Lagoon opens again in March so he will be there then, but right now he has been temporarily assigned to the ESPN Wide World of Sports.

  8. Man, I am sure your daughter will be amazing in Oklahoma, but I do NOT miss the convention of having ballets in the middle of every musical, even if that necessitated a whole super-weird fantasy sequence.

ALSO have y’all seen the Oklahoma production with Hugh Jackman? They did it at the National Theatre years and years ago and filmed it and put it on DVD and it is GREAT.

  9. I still seem to be in kid book reading mode. It seems to be all I have time for these days. But I’ve been meeting with writing groups and going to poetry readings this month, which obviously takes up time. I hope to focus more on writing this year than I did last year. I failed at that one.

I bet your son is going to do great in Orlando!

  10. I remember those guys from the show Emergency — sort of like the show Adam-12 right? Uh oh we are dating ourselves. Where was your son assigned? I wish your daughter all the best with Music Man. It seems they’ve done that one before. I remember.

    1. Yes!! Like Adam 12. Also a great show.

My son is temporarily assigned to the ESPN Wide World of Sports until Typhoon Lagoon opens again in March.

You have an excellent memory. My son has done The Music Man twice, once playing Marcellus. My daughter has done it twice too. Once, a kid in the band and now a Pick A Little Lady.

I love theatre. My daughter is singing songs from Oklahoma! and The Music Man right now as I type this. She is also stomping around while practicing the numbers.
