The Sunday Salon: Beach Day!

The Spot Restaurant

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. We decided to head to Carpinteria for a day of fun in the sun. Carpinteria is a little beach town, very close to Santa Barbara. I love it for three reasons:

  • It’s a family beach with good parking options. Waves aren’t bad either.
  • It’s CLEAN.
  • It reminds me very much of the town of Amity. Do you remember Amity? Well, it was home to a very large shark with a bad attitude. But, sharks are not a problem in Carpinteria. Jellies, yes. Sharks, no.

Oh, and there is a pretty neat little burger shack that we like to hit when we are there. The Spot has been around for fifty-two years. It’s very close to the water which makes it really nice and they make a tasty burger.

The Spot

Here are the guys, waiting for the grub.

E1 and E2 at the Beach

The kids. A rare moment of togetherness, although he looks about ready to strangle her.

The Situation

The Situation, er..I mean my son. Remember how he calls himself a man? Yep, all 98 lbs of him.

The Girl at the Beach

The Girl. Happy as a clam.

Book in Hand

Me. Happy as a clam.

This is why there are never any pics of me. Because when they take them, my head is either cut off, or there is something behind me that isn’t picture worthy, Take this large dumpster for instance. Did the person taking the photo stop to think, “Perhaps I shouldn’t take a photo with a trash can in it?” Nope.

After the beach, we came home to BBQ and I almost burned the house down. Well, the BBQ caught on fire. It looked a lot worse than it was. I was two steps away from getting the fire-extinguisher but I managed to put it out AND save dinner! Father’s Day is saved!

On to reading…

As you may, or may not be able to see  from the photo above, I am reading Tinkers right now. It’s a short book so I should be done with it soon. Good thing too because I am starting a re-read of The Stand on Monday. This isn’t a formal read-along since there was little interest but let me tell you, the three of us (Myself, Jill and Michele) are going to have a rip-roaring time.

Now, I am off to get stuff ready for another week of fun (work and more work). Here’s to a quick work week!

  1. Looks like a lovely day for the family, and LOL LOL, the two things I noticed right off were the title of your book : Tinkers, and the dumpsters (after of course your lovely face). Nice photos, you took Ti 🙂

  2. What a nice post to share with all of us. Your family is beautiful or handsome and you look great. I didn’t even notice the dumpster! You all look very happy and that’s what’s important.

  3. Oh, I love little beach towns like that. I was at one this weekend too! You have to have a burger in a situation like that. I imagine the kids and I will take a couple day trips to the beach this summer (assuming it is not drenched in oil by that time). I’m feeling sad to not be reading The Stand with you…I just love that book. But I must stay focused. You will love it. Someone just told me that they have The Stand in a graphic novel!

  4. I didn’t notice the dumpster either – just that it’s a great picture of you!

Wow, 98 pounds looks very skinny. Makes me feel better that I am not close to that! LOLOL

  5. What a fun weekend! And I’ve been to The Spot! I was scrolling through my google reader and came across that photo and thought “Can it be?? No…” But it is!

One of Bob’s brothers lived in Carpinteria for several years, and we put in many hours at the Spot during beach days when we visited. Glad you enjoyed it too!

  6. Looks like a great way to spend Father’s Day! Can’t wait to hear what you think of Tinkers. Our book club always reads the Pulitzer Prize winner but Mari disliked it so much she talked me into switching to “Let The Great World Spin.”

    1. Re: Tinkers…

I don’t dislike it, but it’s a bit deep. Probably deeper than most people want to read and it’s sort of depressing. I mean, the guy is on his death bed having all these memories from his childhood.

It’s a short book, yet it’s taking me a little bit of time to read. Mostly, because the writing is beautiful in parts and I find myself lingering over them.

For a book club though, I can see why Mari pushed for Let the Great World Spin over Tinkers.

      1. My ears are ringing! 🙂

Our book club isn’t very good reading the Pulitzer so I knew this wouldn’t be a good choice. It is deep but I just didn’t care about the guy, family or situation. That says alot when I’m surrounded by cancer and the end stage with someone close right now.

Did you like it? Would you recommend it?

What a wonderful family day you had last weekend and thanks for sharing photos!

        Have a great week.

ps: I have finally found a place for my laptop in NJ and am sitting for a few minutes 🙂

  7. I laughed when I read “the situation” uh I mean my son. LOL! Never watched the show but Caden says that it is funny.

Why didn’t you have your Kindle with you on the beach? I am thinking of ordering one. I have been waiting for the price to drop and now it is $189. Thoughts?

    1. I didn’t have my Kindle at the beach because I need to review Tinkers, and I had that one in book form already so I took that instead of the Kindle, but man, I am in LOVE with my Kindle. It’s so incredibly easy to use and set-up. It took me like 3 min to set-up, seriously. Page turns are fast, screen is crisp, and the new software upgrade allows you to create collections (folders) so you can organize your books.   The only bad thing about it is Amazon’s website. I like Barnes and Nobles better, but if you shop from your Kindle, as I do, it’s transparent and not an issue. The new lower price is great!! I just got mine last month. It would have been nice to get it at a lower price but I’m not complaining.   You can get Kindle at Target now. Did you know that?
