The Sunday Salon: Merry Happenings

G & E Real Life Christmas 2013

Christmas is right around the corner, isn’t it? Last night we attended a Christmas show at the church and because of last minute plans, The Teen was not able to join us so The Girl’s best friend attended with us. For those who are fairly new to the blog, The Girl is on the right.

There were Victorian carolers.

Funny faces made before the show.

The Hub was there too. He hates for his picture to be taken so getting one that is halfway decent is always a challenge.

The show was great but I did miss The Teen.

Speaking of The Teen, he just found out that he got the part of “Robert” in The Drowsy Chaperone. This is a super-fun show and quite a departure from what he’s used to. It’s a wild and crazy show that will have him singing, tap dancing and roller skating. He is over-the-top thrilled about it and there is a good chance the he will perform some piece of it at the Pantages in Hollywood.

As for this week, I am wrapping up work this Thursday and on Friday we will be at the Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland. Oh, how I love Disneyland at Christmas! After Thursday I am off until January 13th.

Sunday Salon

What am I reading?

Not much. I am now at the very  end of The Abominable and although it’s very good, the payout wasn’t what I was expecting. I’m a little disappointed with where it’s going. There are a lot of books I really need to read but I am not feeling them right now. I think the tone of the one I am reading sort of ruined me for others. Sometimes that happens and I hate when it does.

What am I cooking?

Nothing! Not in the mood today and since I have to head back to the mall (I swore I would not do it!) we will probably pick something up.

What am I watching?

I have been trying to weed through my DVR because it is overloaded with Christmas shows (Frosty, Rudolph, etc.) and I really need to make some space for some other shows. PLUS, I am way behind with my holiday movie watching. Some movies that are “must sees” for me this time of year:

  1. Christmas Vacation (saw it once but was cooking, need to see it again)
  2. White Christmas
  3. The Family Stone
  4. Christmas with the Kranks
  5. It’s a Wonderful Life (usually seen on Christmas night)
  6. Elf
  7. Home for the Holidays (Holly Hunter version)
  8. Love Actually (seen over Thanksgiving)
  9. A Christmas Story
  10. Jingle All the Way

There are some others that I sometimes don’t feel like watching and other times love. Home Alone and Deck the Halls fall into that category. I love A Miracle on 34th Street but I tend to watch that on Thanksgiving day.

Well, I am off to see what I can get done. Wish me luck today as I have to hit the mall and bookstore and I MUST finish my shopping.

What Day Is It?

At this time of the year, it’s so easy for the days to slip past me. The day-to-day routine of getting up at the crack of dawn, working,  shuttling children back and forth, and then trying to cook a meal or get anything done around the house, means that my days blend into one another. Monday? Tuesday? Oh yes, it’s Thursday. Could have fooled me.

Over Thanksgiving I read a stimulating book, Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami, and it made me feel somewhat normal again. Human, if you will. But the feeling was short-lived because I am feeling all spongy again. AND, I have yet to write the review of that book and three others I’ve read because of this “spongy” state I am in. I sit myself down in front of the computer, lift my coffee cup to my eager mouth and then… nothing. Nothing comes to mind. Instead, I stare at my Christmas light decked bulletin board. Oh, the lights are so pretty.

Pardon the horrible photo. I took it with my crappy phone but you get the idea.

My bulletin board at work

I love how it includes bookish stuff, family pics and duck and cover earthquake instructions all on the same board. This is what I stare at all day. Ahem, when I am not hard at work, of course.

Tonight I am making coconut macaroons for a Christmas party I am attending tomorrow night,  and I am feeling the need to make some Thai curry for dinner. Sometimes chicken and rice is just so comforting. Maybe, maybe I can squeeze a movie in or at least watch Rudolph and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

This is the weekend before finals for The Teen, so I suspect that we will be hanging around for the most part. I still have some shopping to do but I will be damned if I try to do it on the weekend again. At least, not during the daylight hours.

And what’s with all of those free shipping deals over Black Friday? Still waiting for my stuff to arrive and it’s making me nervous since the stuff hasn’t even shipped yet and I’ve already been told by one vendor that the stuff is no longer in stock. Don’t offer free shipping if it’s going to arrive on the back of a monkey or something.
