The Short of It:

An interesting snapshot of a time long gone.

The Rest of It:

A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history. ~ Indiebound

Based on the true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Horse is a living and breathing account of Kentucky in 1850 and beyond. Jarret is the enslaved groom hired to care for young Lexington. A horse bred to win, but the unusual bond between the two is threatened to be broken when Lexington begins to get the attention of those wanting to profit off of Lexington’s noble lineage.

Fast forward to 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist becomes curious about a skeleton found in the attic of the museum. As she works to restore it, properly articulating each bone, she realizes that a horse of this stature most likely had quite a history. Enter Theo, he finds a discarded painting of a horse and it turns out that the two are related.

Horse is one of those stories that spans decades and includes many key players but the story that held my attention the most was the bond between Jarret and Lexington. Everything else, although interesting on its own, took me away from what I really wanted to focus on, this magnificent creature and the boy hired to care for him. Status, race, slavery. It’s all here.

This is not a book I would have picked up on my own but as a book club book, I think there will be plenty to discuss.

Santa Clarita, Ca.

Hello, friends. Happy Wednesday! I had this past Monday off for Juneteenth. I didn’t do a darn thing but it was nice to have it off. It gave me time to finish my book club read, Horse. We meet tonight to discuss it over wood fired pizzas and wine.

My reading has been going a lot better. I am a good ways into The Bird Hotel and loving it. Next up is one of those classics I selected. Not sure yet which one. And the photo above has nothing to do with anything except every single day I wonder how many more houses they will build in our neighborhood. I mean, the traffic is so bad now. If I walk down to the end of my street, this is what I see.

My husband flew to Seattle to spend Father’s Day weekend with my son. It was a great trip for him. He doesn’t get to take time off too often so it was a nice break and they managed to fit a ball game in too. Root Beer was quite the host! She is the sweetest cat. I was pretty busy anyway. I attended two performances for our students and Sunday’s student ministry activities completely wore me out! It’s so fun but man, I napped like I never napped before once I got home.

When my friend came over the other night, we started the new season of Black Mirror. Not bad but so far, not too crazy. Not sure if I’ll finish the season out. It’s short but it isn’t grabbing me so far.

That’s all I have. No big plans for the weekend except a dental cleaning. Exciting!
