Sunday Matters: Big Books

Sunday Matters, a latte on a wooden tray against greenery.

Good morning! I love a big book. A big, doorstopper of a read. The only problem is that the reviews get sidelined until it’s read. This is my only post for the week since I am making my way through one of those doorstopper reads.

My son’s non-profit, Bunker Arts Collective suffered a loss. They have this big yellow van named DOLLY and while in secure storage, it was vandalized! They stole the starter and the battery! His supporters rallied and raised the money to replace them, but what a sad sack you have to be to ruin a vehicle that beautifies the neighborhood.

Right Now:

Online ministry and then student ministry. Man, I am wiped out from being back in the office this week. I will load up on coffee and hope for the best. That post church nap will be fine, fine, fine.

This Week:

Not much going on. Three days in the office, two from home. My book club meets Wednesday to discuss Bright Young Women.

Reading:

I am a little over halfway through with The Brothers Karamazov. It’s quite a read and surprisingly, very readable for a big chunkster (928pp). It is reminding me a lot of another read, Beware of Pity. It’s very similar.

Still reading these but since Brothers is such a chunk, these are slow going.

Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout
Three Days in June by Anne Tyler (comes out 2/11)
Trust by Hernan Diaz (Feb club pick)

Watching:

Not much. I found that old show Emergency on at 5pm each evening and I have fallen back in love with it. It’s such a good, classic show.

Also watching a lot of Seinfeld. It’s just what I am in the mood for.

Grateful for:

  • I finally grew my post-surgical hair out enough to cut and it looks normal again! Shorter, but full. I had no idea that the hair fall out would bother me so much.
  • Stamina. I had to hike it up a hill recently because parking was a beast and I got up that hill without any trouble. This is huge since the Pulmonary Embolism from last February.
  • My daughter booked a film! Her first paid gig. Grateful for that confidence boost. She graduates this year and is feeling all those feels.

That’s about it for me. I find myself deep in thought these days about all things. Like, the media ban that I am imposing on myself this week to avoid, you know. Anyone else?

  1. Ti, hope you have a good week! You had some good things to report for sure. So sorry that your son’s company van was vandalized. I really don’t understand why these things happen. Enjoy your reading – and your long…..book. LOL

  2. How is Emma already graduating?! How exciting for a film role, that’s awesome.

And vandalizing Evan’s van just seems so awful. There are terrible people in the world, but also more that are wonderufl.

    1. The vandalism in his neighborhood is why he started the non profit in the first place so it’s not surprising. It was just surprising to see it happen in a secured lot.

  3. That’sthrilling about Emma’s film deal! She must feel pretty excited (and you guys must be very proud!). What a shame about Evan’s van situation. People can be such jerks… speaking of which, a news/media ban sounds just about right for, say, the next four years? Thank goodness for books! Glad your hair is getting back to normal, as it your stamina. You’ve come a long way! I’m so happy for you.

    1. Yep. It’s a small part in the film but her first paid gig is a big deal.

I didn’t watch the inauguration. Absolutely refused to. I wish I could sleep in one of those nap space pods and wake up four years later but not age. 🙂

  4. I have only read one book by Dostoevsky – The Idiot which I thoroughly enjoyed and read twice! It took me a long time to get through it though and I don’t think it’s as long as The Brothers Karamazov. Good for you! And Emergency! I loved that show. You can’t go wrong with Seinfeld either. 🙂

  5. So The Brothers Karamazov is surprisingly readable? Good to hear. That’s one book that has intimidated me for a long time. I think C&P will be the next Russian classic I read. Congrats to Emma on her film deal… and hooray for stamina. Glad you’re doing so well!

  6. Yes to the media ban. What an awful week with that. I could tune out the next four years. I hope you get some rest. Being back at work is tough. And sorry to your son’s nonprofit, ugh, people. Hang in there.

    1. If I wasn’t in communications and online all the time I could tune the next four years out but it’s impossible. It’s so defeating.

  7. I think I found you. You made several comments on my blog (I think) and I wanted to return the favor but didn’t know your blog’s name. Are you Ti Reed? If so, thank you for the comments which made me feel like I have an ally. Looking forward to knowing you better.

      1. That is good to know. I just purchased the audiobook from Audible but gulped because it is over 40 hours of listening time. One full work week of just listening to one book, if I could manage 8 hours a day. Ha!

        1. That is a lot of hours. I listened to one King book last summer that was over 60 and I was about to stab my eye out with a pen. I LOVE King but it was just too long. Not good to listen to.

  8. First, I’m sorry to hear about your son’s van but glad to hear of the generosity of others. Second, raising hand, that I am with you on the media ban especially on my phone (little worry for TV, we watch non-news items on the streaming services) and especially these first weeks of the new regime.

    1. I am on social media for work so the very next day, I saw all of it anyway and it all made me so angry. I am just trying to surround myself with good.
