As a book blogger, reading feels especially good when it’s productive. But it also feels good when you just enjoy what you are reading without a thought as to when you will finish a book, or even when it will get reviewed. I say this because Dune has sent me to the sidelines with my reading productivity, but the enjoyment factor is way up. This meant no reviews this past week and that’s okay.
Right Now:
Almost time for me to head to student ministry. We are in a series on James and it’s so good. All about finding joy in the struggle. It’s hard to do, especially for young people but it’s an important topic to discuss.
This Week:
As luck would have it, healthcare workers are striking so my medical appointments have been a challenge. I did see the specialist and the physical therapist and have started everything they recommended to me, including the use of a cane. I have tripped on the cane twice. Lordy. The cane is surprisingly helpful though.
I have book club this week and will be reading the club’s pick as soon as I get home today. Hey, at least the details of it will remain fresh in my mind.
Reading:
My club’s pick is This Tender Land. After this book, I need to take some time to figure out my next read. I was approved for some really great reads lately but they don’t come out until 2022 so my dilemma is, read them now? Wait? I tend to want to read them now. Especially the new Stewart O’Nan!
Watching:
We have been dipping in and out of La Brea. It is like a cross between Land of the Lost and Lost. It’s sometimes very good and sometimes a little silly. We are on episode four and not sure about it.
Grateful for:
- As weird as it will be to not have the kids here for Thanksgiving, I am grateful that we can do whatever the heck we want. I might cook. We might go out! I’ve never done that for Thanksgiving.
- Naps. I have really mastered the cat nap.
That’s all I have. Have a wonderful Sunday and great week!
I’m feeling the same way about my current reading and lack of reviews. I’m about 3/4 of the way into The Splendid and the Vile (it’s a chunkster!), which I started at the end of October. It’s a great book, but I’ll be lucky if I finish even 2 books in November because of it’s length. Do I care? Nope!
I’m envious that you got an ARC of Stewart O’Nan’s upcoming release! I really like his novels and will have to get a copy of that one as soon as it hits the shelves. I say read it now and just save your draft review for later.
Over the years, we have learned to embrace the holidays in which we are alone. We have gone to the movies, gone for long walks, hosted friends and neighbors, binged on a tv series while eating pizza, etc. It’s nice to have some down time without all the chaos. I hope you can enjoy your Thanksgiving break and I know you’ll look forward to a big Christmas celebration!
Glad you have been enjoying Dune – so looking forward to Ocean State (Rhode Island:) but closer to pub date – hope you love it. I hope to read some frivolous Christmas mysteries etc after Thanksgiving. Hope your exercises help your knee.
I look forward to seeing what you think of This Tender Land. It’s been on my bookshelf for quite a while and I need motivation to read it.
I hope the can helps your knee (and that it doesn’t cause you to trip more and hurt yourself again)!
“when you just enjoy what you are reading without a thought as to when you will finish a book, or even when it will get reviewed” — I wish I would remember this all the time. When I am not blogging, I don’t worry about when I finish a book or if I have reviews to write. So I overall end up reading less per year but I enjoy every one of those books (plus I remember them better). When I’m blogging, I’m in a rush, not necessarily because I want to review it but also because I hear about more books, I see everyone else reading and reviewing, and I just want to keep moving. Sometimes, that’s okay, but other times, especially with books like Dune, maybe not.
Dune is my husband’s favorite ever book. I have never seen him so excited about a movie like he was about the Dune movie. I still haven’t read the book but hopefully I will soon. Since it’s not at the library right now, I went and picked couple of other chunksters. So now I am considering just buying the book so that I can have my time with it.
I am glad that you’re enjoying Dune. My dad loves La Brea. I found it odd at times, but some episodes were good. I don’t watch much TV, but I like the humor in Ghosts.
Have fun reading Dune and then see the Movie! That new O’Nan book sure looks alluring. Good luck with your PT appointments … gosh it takes time to heal, argh. We are headed to SoCal next Sat … should be a fun 9 days there … fly in to PS ….
Palm Springs is so nice this time of the year. Enjoy your visit to Ca. It was 91 degrees here yesterday.
I’ve never been so behind on reviews before, and even though I don’t like it I don’t feel motivated to get them done. I really need to though since it’s close to the end of the year.
I’ll be spending Thanksgiving with my 2 sons, daughter in law, one granddaughter, and my dil’s mom (we say we’re sisters because we’re so much alike) 🙂
There’s a new Stewart O’Nan? I don’t think I’d be able to wait to read that one! Enjoy your time with Dune and give yourself to be unproductive for a while. You deserve it. Have a great week, Ti.
