Sunday Matters: Fall is Almost Here

Sunday Matters

It has cooled down lots around here. We’ve had beautiful 85 degree days and the prettiest skies. I even lit a candle the other day! It feels so good to have cooler weather. I am also so glad that the weather in this country has calmed down a little.  I was so worried when Irma hit but I think I’ve touched base with most of you and the majority of you came out of it okay. I know this was not the case with all of you so I pray that the clean-up and rebuilding goes smoothly.

Right Now:

Just lounging around for a minute and then it’s laundry and all the other stuff I need to do. Some of which will be taken up by dress shopping for homecoming!

This Week:

Music Man auditions are this week. That’s always fun. My life group meets on Tuesday. There are volleyball games and pictures and homecoming at the end of the week.

Guess what? My son was accepted into Disney’s College Program! He leaves in January for at least one semester. If you are not familiar with it, he will be working at Disney World Orlando and taking classes as part of the program. He is very excited. He needed a little good news and he got it.

Reading:

I finished My Absolute Darling and it was a real kick in the gut. Not like A Little Life but similar in how brutal the story is. I keep using “brutal” to describe it but that is truly the word that my mind spits out over and over again.

I just started Bird Box for RIP XII and The Lathe of Heaven for book club.

Don’t forget that King’s new book comes out later this month! Join me for the read along. Click the button below for info:

Watching:

  • Fear the Walking Dead (it seems to have gotten boring again)
  • American Horror Story: Cult (it’s full of clowns and if the main character continues to scream and cry all the time, I am going to lose it).

I feel like watching a comedy classic but not sure which one. Maybe Some Like it Hot.

Making:

It’s not even remotely cold but chili sounds good. The question is, will I actually make some? You know what also sounds good? Apple pie. You can make a meal out if that, right?

Grateful for:

I’ve expanded my volunteer hours to include a new area of need and it’s been good. Really good. My goal this year was to connect more with people and this opportunity certainly allows me to do that.

What about you? Tell me what’s been going on in your life.

  1. Aww, I hope your son has fun at Disney! I’ve heard it’s a really good experience — I remember a bunch of people I knew in college who had done it and enjoyed it a lot.

What’s going on in my life: I have a new air conditioner and my life is 100% better! And I have plenty of pirate books to read, and a new yummy restaurant has opened up across the street from me, so things are looking pretty bright.

    1. They fixed my AC so I can relate to the joy that comes from that.

The Disney news has us all excited and then last night, my son won the Hamilton lottery so he took his sis and they sat front row, center. An awesome experience for sure. My daughter said they were spitting all over the place and it was awesome.

  2. If you put a piece of cheddar cheese on your apple pie (I’ve never actually done that but apparently that’s good), then you’ve had protein, fruit and a carb. I’d call that a meal!

    1. Lisa,

When I worked at a pie shop, this cheese thing was huge. I was like, what?? It’s so good!! Of course now I have to have gluten free pie which isn’t the flaky goodness needed to meld with the cheese.

  3. Congratulations again to E and his acceptance. I am still in awe that he was accepted!

Apple pie is absolutely a meal. It makes a fantastic breakfast.

Dance, the parade, football. Although I think I managed to put Jim on chauffeur duty for today, so I get just football. And laundry. I’m okay with that.

Good luck to everyone on tryouts this week! And have fun dress shopping for Homecoming! This will be our first year where we don’t have to buy anything and have no reason to go to the game. We still will though. I feel we need to attend at least one football game this year.

    1. I survived dress and shoe shopping and I must say, she picked a really pretty dress. Pics later as she will not let me take any now. I was planning to go to the homecoming game this Friday but she was like, why? Ahem, whatever.

I think I may try to make an apple pie here soon. Someone gave me a gluten free crust recipe using cream cheese and frankly, it sounds good just on its own. I need to test it out before Thanksgiving hits.

Oh, and I can’t remember if I mentioned it but my son also won the Hamilton lottery for this past Saturday night so he took my daughter and they had a really great time. At first, he pretended to sneak in and she was wiggin’ out. LOL.

      1. She does realize that just because you are going to the game does not mean you have to sit with her, right? LOL!

Um, that is awesome! First, that is so sweet that he took his sister. I don’t know if my son would have done the same. What a great experience for both of them, being theater geeks and all!

  4. Congrats to yours; how great for him! I do want to read My Absolute Darling but am on the holds list at library. Hope you have a great week.

    1. When you do read My Absolute Darling, be sure to check back with me so we can discuss. I was so bothered by the subject matter and the ending was a little weird.

  5. I have doubts about throwing myself into My Absolute Darling..I think I need time…that is awesom news about your son!

Chili sounds good…we just put stuff in the slow cooker…meat and veg to be topped with Greek yogurt and eaten over rice…brown rice…it’s a first time recipe.

    1. Meat and yogurt scream Greek to me. Is it a Greek recipe?

My Absolute Darling is NOT for you. It’s excellent but definitely not your thing. You will be sickened by it.

Our chili was good but the turkey kind of fell apart. Too lean, maybe? It sort of disintegrated.

  6. Congrats to the boy! My nephew did a Disney internship in the culinary program, he had a great time!
Our AC leaked into our furnace, so dead furnace, both are old so we have to replace both $$$. On top of that, we didn’t catch the leak and now have a mold issue. Oy Oy Oy.

I laughed so much I cried reading Jennie Lawson’s Furiously Happy. I love the vocabulary she comes up with. If you haven’t read it – it’s a must! I am almost done with Robin Sloans new book Sourdough. It is good, but not as good as his first Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore.

    1. I heard of the Sourdough book but did not put two and two together. Didn’t realize it was by the same author who wrote 24 HR Bookstore. That was an enjoyable read.

AC issues are the worst. Mold too. Now we have a wild animal tearing up our newly planted yard. I swear. I don’t want to hurt the animal so we’ve tried cayenne and all the natural stuff. We back to a steep hillside and I guess our wrought iron fence is not enough of a barrier. But even with chicken wire over that large space it won’t deter this beast. You should see the destruction!

  7. Congratulations to your son, Ti. My husband explained the program to me, and it sounds like such a great opportunity. You will have to keep us posted on how it goes for him. I hope Music Man auditions go well this week. I am not familiar with My Absolute Darling. I will have to look it up.

This weekend is coming to an end too soon. We are having homemade macaroni and cheese and corn bread to night and then I think I’ll finish my book, Quiet. I hope you have a great week, Ti!

  8. Congrats to the Boy — that’s great news about the Disney program! Music Man, volleyball and homecoming for the Girl — all in one week, wow: it’s busy but good there! Fall has hit here and it’s already been in the 40s, ouch! But next week hopefully it’ll get back into the 60s. Sort of seems good reading weather!

    1. Well, it is supposed to be in the mid-90s this week for us so I am not all that happy about it. I was getting into the nice, cooler weather and then this.

Yes, the weekend was busy and there was a little bit of stress running all over heck to get things done but as usual, I survived. I get so worked up about stuff these days.

  9. Sounds like volunteering is a good thing for you. I’m glad you are enjoying it. Hot weather here…the mornings start off nice and cool but by afternoon it’s so muggy!
