Slow The Heck Down

Books and Happiness

I am ready for this crazy week to end. I had something going on EVERY night this week. Concerts, school performances, audition prep for Grease. I am so tired!

Yes, it is all coming to a close soon but with summer comes additional stuff like the THREE summer school classes that The Teen is taking to make sure he is on track. When you have two periods of choir and two periods of drama, you end up going to summer school to make sure you are on track for graduation. Who knows about student government at this point? It’s a wild card. When I was in high school you couldn’t take any of this stuff until you had the requirements met. Ultimately, I can veto all of it but now he believes he wants to go to a performing arts school which justifies the heavy art load. Sort of.

All I want to do this weekend is sit down with a book and maybe throw something on the grill. This book has my interest right now. I am a good 100 pages in and hooked so far:

Cutting Teeth

The theater department had a seafood fundraiser and I bought a bag of these gigantic scallops and a bag of jumbo shrimp. Weird idea for a fundraiser, huh? I sure hope they weren’t sitting in a van down by the river in 100 degree heat before arriving at my doorstep. Anyway, the shrimp I can always use but I don’t have any tried and true recipes for the scallops.

After looking online, I found this recipe, Scallops and Corn Chowder from Real Simple. Doesn’t it look good? It’s does not involve the grill but that’s okay. Sitting outside with a tall glass of something and a bowl of this? Bliss.

I’ve also been wondering, in my more lucid moments, where my sense of style went. It’s vanished. I would like to spiff up my style in some way. I am very practical when it comes to clothes and I hate spending money on clothes when I can spend it on other things, but I don’t think I can ignore the fact that my style is in the $h^t#@r. I like comfortable but the last time I checked, looking like a hobo wasn’t a thing.

Anyway, I must go and look productive. I hope you have a nice, relaxing weekend.

  1. I love this recipe for Scallops with Grapefruit and Bacon. Our favorite!

I have no style whatsoever. These days I feel like a toad so all I wear are running shorts and t-shirts. Once I’m home, I’m in sweats. Blah.

I am not envious of you weathering the summer school with the Teen. Next summer my boy child will be taking an online PE class (???) and I can barely wait to see how he procrastinates and drives me to drink. My daughter did SS for the last two summers, but we are free and clear this time around and I feel like I’ve got the world by the tail. For just a teeny bit.

    1. Well, The Teen is taking PE online as well, to make-up for the dropped semester of track. He is taking Health online too. And then he is taking  Sign Language 101 at the community college which counts for 2 years of language. I am a little concerned over that one. I  mean, he dropped Spanish after a semester. I don’t think he knows how complex sign language can be. He was supposed to take two History classes but his  counselor said he has room for it in his schedule next year. Oh he does, but only if he doesn’t take science. UGH.

I gotta check out that recipe. Bacon and scallops cannot be bad.

    1. When I have some time on my hands, I love to cook. It’s very relaxing to me. So yes, you can come over and I will make you some scallops.

  2. I hope you get that quiet time with a book this weekend, Ti! And I just added Cutting Teeth to my wish list this week… sure sounds like my kind of book. Will look forward to hearing what you think.

    1. In my head, I long for summer because of its lazy days but I haven’t had a lazy summer since the age of 13. I long for it though.

  3. Oh my…you do have a lot going on…you need a restful yummy food weekend! Den and I went to the beach on Tuesday and we saw Godzilla today and ended with a trip to Trader Joe’s…I am in the midst of Cutting Teeth, too, but am a bit creeped out by Harper and Tiffany! Ick!

  4. Ugh! At least life here has been stop and start. I’d like a little more pause, though. Fortunately, I do have Memorial Day Weekend off and then a longish weekend near my birthday in the beginning of June. But right now, I can relate to the busyness. 😦

  5. I love scallops. They’re great just quickly stir-fried with a bit of garlic and then a dash of butter before you take the pan off the stove. I like the way they do it in restaurants, nicely grilled, but everytime we’ve tried that, they look more burnt than grilled. As for my sense of style, when I’m home I’m always wearing yoga pants and a t-shirt, so I’m definitely not on the style end of things!

    1. Teppan restaurants make scallops the best way. I watch and pay careful attention but mine never turn out as tender as theirs.  I think I am going to attempt the scallops this weekend. Not sure how yet.

  6. Your comment about style had me cracking. This year I told the husband that I am going to change my wardrobe and start wearing more stylist clothes. Now, my style = black. I love black like I was born in it or something. To the extent that recently, a girl I occasionally see at work came and asked me why I wear too much black, and when I wore something different the next day, she pointed out that I looked good. (Hello??) Anyways, good luck with that. I have changed my wardrobe some, but I still sometimes deviate to the comfy clothes that don’t exactly make me look savvy.

    1. Oh dear. We are in the same boat. Everything I own is black. Why? Because it goes with everything and makes me not look like a clown. I am not into pastels and for some reason, all of the clothing catalogs come spring and summer flip a switch and sell nothing but pastels or brights… also bad for me.

I have like 8 black essentials Ts from Gap and it’s not enough.

  7. I hear you on the busy, hectic schedules. We had 4 baseball games, TKD, and lacrosse to deal with this past week. I had to take a nap on Saturday because I was so tired.

I put a hold on Cutting Teeth at the library. It sounds like my type of book. I’m trying to finish up a book called “Mr. Lynch’s Holiday”. It’s an incredibly tedious book that is just aimlessly meandering along. I should have stopped after the 3rd chapter.

I work at a place where most of the women dress pretty nicely, so it’s caused me to reevaluate my existing wardrobe too. In the last 2 years, I’ve spent way too much money on clothes and am now running out of closet space. So, I need to put a rein on my spending. It’s funny because I usually don’t spend a lot of money on clothes at all. I would rather use the dollars for buying crafting supplies. Not sure what’s happened to me.

    1. My clothing allowance went out the window after I had the two kids. I love buying stuff for them but I really need to buy a few pieces soon. I cleaned out my closet and there was nothing left to hang, really.

Keep up with Lynch. I ended up really loving that one.

  8. Seafood does seem like a weird idea for a fundraiser, but I do like a good scallop or few. I confess, I wouldn’t have the first idea how to cook them, though.

    1. With seafood, I know it doesn’t take long to cook but I always cook scallops too long and then they get rubbery. I have been told though that the higher quality the scallop, the better results but isn’t that the case with most things? LOL. I haven’t pulled them out yet but I probably will over the three day weekend.
