The Sunday Salon: Checking In

Sunday Salon

Hello! Stopping by for a quick ‘hello’ before I take a much-needed nap. This time change is wonderful! I feel as if I’ve had a full day, but I am way sleepy and want to kick back with a book and maybe, just maybe, take a cat nap. Think it will happen? It might. The Girl has been totally absorbed with her new Kindle Fire and the novelty has yet to wear off so I am going to take advantage of that.

What am I reading?

I am reading a lot, but haven’t had the energy to write any reviews. I’ve got to write them soon though because the details are already slipping from my mind. Let’s see, what am I reading? I am reading The Shining Girls. Meh. I am not liking it all that much and it’s gotten so much buzz. I just started The Abominable but haven’t read enough to give it a fair shake yet. I’ve also started How To Be a Good Wife. That one is very interesting. Not sure what to make of it yet.

What am I cooking?

Yesterday I made homemade spaghetti sauce so we will probably have that tonight. I am not in the mood to cook. I had some weird reaction to food recently and my mouth is swelling in the same spot I had a problem with last March. Long story short, unless the food is very soft, I don’t really have an appetite for it. Auto-immune issues suck.

What am I watching?

Oh my goodness. I have discovered The Walking Dead. With all that I had going on, I needed a distraction and let me tell you, I could not have picked a better show. I started with the first episode last week and I am already half-way through season three! I love it!

Thank you all for the kind emails and Facebook posts. It’s been a rough couple of weeks. We have started the “fixing” that needs to take place and I feel more like myself, but there are times where I feel very low. The flip side is that through all of this, I’ve turned to walking and I have lost ten pounds just from pounding the pavement. Hard to believe that just a few miles a day could make that much of a difference but it can.

I hope you are all well and that you are enjoying the weekend. Off I go to take that nap.

    1. The ten pounds is only mere drop in the bucket but I’ll take it! I dragged myself out to walk this morning and with the time change, my body was out of whack. I must have looked like a lurching zombie or something. I got a lot of looks!

  1. I swear you and I always seem to be on the same wavelength. I’m reading The Shining Girls too, but I’m finding it compelling about 40% of the way through. We will see where it ends up. I haven’t started up with Walking Dead yet. We are watching House of Cards right now (love, but isn’t Breaking Bad…nothing will be the same) and then will attack Sons of Anarchy. Then maybe Walking Dead. I’ve got my next year planned out. Hang in there friend, and know I’m HERE with great listening ears.

    1. I am sticking with Shining Girls to see if there is a payoff but I am more than half way through and frustrated with it.

Walking Dead, you have to see it and you will hate me for it! Because it is so freakin’ addicting. I cannot stop and in fact, even though I am halfway through season 3, I went back to the beginning so the hub could watch it with me. Knowing how you like this stuff I am amazed that you haven’t see it. You will love it. You will love it for sure.

  2. It was a nice long day and perfect for a nap too – while enjoying As Good As It Gets- love Nicholson.

Nice to see you post and congrats on the -10 lbs!

  3. I loved the first season of The Walking Dead, but haven’t gotten back to it yet. I’m right at the start of Season 2 (on Netflix).

I’m glad that the “fixing” is happening for your family. Good luck.

    1. I got really angry last week because I have been watching The Walking Dead on my lunch break, and someone actually had the nerve to use the computer lab for WORK! How dare they! So I was not able to watch over lunch. Today, I may be able to.

  4. Glad to know the fixing is underway. I ramped up my walking this fall, too. Between that and cutting out a lot of wheat products, I’ve lost 8 pounds and feel a lot better. Small changes can make a big difference. Best of luck for continued fixing and walking 🙂

    1. In our heads, 8-10 lbs doesn’t sound like a lot but carrying around 10 lbs dumbbells could be unbearable for my weak, jello like arms. LOL. I would love to lose another 5 before Thanksgiving.

  5. After having had it recommended to me by about half a dozen people, both friends and *complete* strangers on a bus trip to NYC, I finally got a chance to get into The Walking Dead on Netflix. After an inappropriate amount of binge watching, we finally caught up to the current season, which is great except now we have to wait for a week between episodes! LOL.

Glad to hear that what’s broken is starting to be fixed. Hope things will be looking up soon!

    1. Binge watching is EXACTLY what it is! I saw one episode last week that had me in tears. I’m sure you can imagine which one of season 3 did that to me. Think, wee one. Ugh! I nearly died. I cannot stop watching but I went back to the beginning so the hub could watch it with me. He is not totally into it yet but with 3 episodes under his belt, it is growing on him.

    1. I didn’t know that you watched Walking Dead. It’s not an easy show to watch while eating my lunch, all those slurping, ripping sounds, but I love it.

    1. I watched The Walking Dead when it first came out but I must not have watch very much of it before declaring that it wasn’t for me. It’s taken me all this time to discover it again. I do this with all hit shows (Roseanne, Seinfeld, Big Bang).

    1. Thanks Deb. The 10 lbs loss is the up side to being stressed out and taking it out on the pavement. LOL.

  6. Good for you! I’ve got to get back to walking, myself. I gave up candy and snacks for a while and lost a few pounds, then my birthday and Halloween this past week set me back a bit! I got hooked on Walking Dead, but hubby didn’t, so I’ve only watched Season One so far, I think.

    1. Happy Belated birthday!

I am not into sweets and I can’t have gluten because of my allergy but I guess I manage to eat enough to still put the weight on. I wasn’t striving to lose so it was a nice surprise. I just needed an outlet for the stress! I am going to try and keep it up but today was rough. Shin splints and the time change threw a wrench into the mix. I like to walk when it’s dark out (early morning) and it was too bright for my liking.

  7. Walking every day. Why can’t I get myself to do that? 10 pounds off would be awesome. I do hope things are getting better, I know you said it would take a long time, but if you can see glimmers of improvement, that’s great

    1. And Helen, the walking thing I am only doing 4 times a week. Not even every day! Just 30 minutes/2miles a day for the past 6 weeks and I am down the 10 lbs and 2 sizes. Easy enough to do but I still bitch every day that I do it. LOL.

  8. The Shining Girls is coming up in my TBR pile. I hope it gets better for you.

I really enjoy The Walking Dead too. This is the first season I’ve been able to watch somewhat live (I record it to watch later).

I hope things progress in the right direction for you. I am thinking of you.

    1. I am waving back! I have been enjoying my down time but feel the need to get some reviews written here soon. I’ve been reading blogs though so I don’t feel too out of the loop. Time sure flies, though.

  9. Glad things are looking up for you and what… 10 lbs just from walking. Now that’s motivation enough for me, except, alas, we’re snowed in already.

  10. All the walking sounds fantastic. I had told Scott that when Evie started getting up at 5 I’d head to the gym afterward…but we skipped that hour and now she wakes up around 7. I figure if I headed for the gym before 7, she’d probably wake up earlier (plus allllll the milk!). It’s too cold to walk during the day now so I’m feeling a little bit more gelatinous the past few weeks.

Curious about your spaghetti sauce recipe. Do you freeze it? I make a meat sauce that I freeze but I’d like something that is a little bit simpler for an easy meatless dinner.

    1. The sauce I made was actually a laborious meat sauce that cooked all day, BUT…the best meatless sauce, is one I came across on the Web.

1 – 15 ounces can of crushed tomatoes (best quality canned tomatoes you can find)

1 – whole onion, peeled and sliced in half

1- stick of butter. (a whole stick!)

Throw it all in a pot and simmer for at least 30 minutes. Take the onion out at the end. It’s divine. I sometimes add a splash of balsamic vinegar or red wine if I want to change it up. It’s almost too simple but it’s very good.

  11. I’m impressed with the ten pounds…but sorry you have had to be stressed out in order to lose it. Hopefully things are getting better.

    1. Thanks Tif! I feel your positive vibes from way over here.

I knew about the Walking Dead books but are they books in the traditional sense of graphic novels. I had it in my head they were comics.

  12. You need to try the TWD books as well. I started watching the show couple of months back and love it like crazy. Need to start season 3 now. As for the books, I finished the first 8 volumes and they are more amazing, if possible.

    1. I see the graphic novels but I don’t see regular books. Is that what you mean by books? I feel as if I need them. I am all caught up to the current season and dying inside.
