My Friday Rambling

This has been a pretty good week. I thought it was going to be all kinds of crazy after being off for so long but all was good. Next week the kids return to school so homework will once again plague me. I know why they have it and I have no problem with THEM doing it but inevitably, I end up helping probably more than I should since the organizational skills of my youngest leave a lot to be desired. If she brings the work home, that’s always good because she usually leaves it in her desk which prompts me to send messages to the other parents trying to get the assignment.

Other things on my mind right now:

  • My broken tooth (which I didn’t even know was broken) will be capped tomorrow. Yep! A Saturday and will required another Saturday in two weeks to complete the process. I cannot stand dental work. I wish I could just wake up and have the whole thing done but that isn’t how it works.
  • Production week for The Music Man is looming. It’s the week of January 28th but I am getting a little antsy. The kids usually do alright but I get a little wound-up with the massive prep involved and making sure they are where they need to be. Two casts schedules to juggle since The Boy is in all shows and The Girl is in three. Plus, I work backstage. That part I actually like but I worry about getting the props to the right kid, etc.
  • I am announcing a read-along next week. It’s early but hopefully with the advanced notice many of you will be able to join me.

What am I reading?

I am finishing up Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. I am in the final pages.  I am also reading Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. I wasn’t sure what to expect with Fountain’s book but I am liking it. It’s a slow build for me though. I am about ten chapters in and it’s starting to get good.

That’s pretty much it. No big plans for the weekend besides the dentist and watching some football. What are you reading this weekend? Any big plans?

  1. No big plans for the weekend, which is good. I have an appointment with the girl today for her pre-op physical…and then Monday is the surgery, and I’ll get to spend the day with her worrying over her reaction to the surgery, etc.

    1. She’s be just fine. She’ll be really sleepy though so expect that afterward. It’s so sweet when they wake up and see you there.

  2. Readalong? and not #shineon? I’m glad you had a good week. I really did, too. Even if I was grumpy or seemed to be. I have loved being home, time is my own, nothing huge required, all good. I have zero plans for next week, too.

  3. Ahh, I hate dental work as well, and need to make some upcoming appointments for the family. It sounds like you will have your hands full with the play, but I know it will turn out just fine 🙂 I just bought Flight Behavior, and want to get the chance to read it in the next couple of weeks. I am reading Y: A Novel, and listening to Call the Midwife on audio. I am having a lot of luck with audios right now, and have to say that I finish 3 audios to one book. Have a great weekend, Ti!

    1. Wanna hear something funny? I thought Flight Behavior was about birds so I was glad that it was not about birds because I do not like birds. Isn’t that funny? How you hear or see a title, accept a galley based on the author’s previous works and then haven’t a clue what the book is about until you read it? LOL.

  4. Fri., Sat. and Sun. plans are going to eat into my reading time, but I’m planning to finish both The Power of Habit and Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore this weekend.

  5. Back to the chaos, yes. My kids started Monday and mid-terms are next week for my son. Plus he totally screwed up his back in wrestling, so now we are doing PT a couple times a week, plus drugs and missed school. All the things I thought I’d get done this week fell by the wayside. Which is typical. But hubby’s birthday is this weekend and we have a full agenda. Zero Dark Thirty! Fattening restaurant! Running! Animal shelter! No more vacation!

    1. Ugh. So sorry about your son. My son just told me he made track, which is good because he’s been practicing for months now. It would seriously suck if he did not make the team after all of that. Happy Bday to the hub. You guys will have a good time and make my mouth water with some delectable FB post for sure.

  6. Am hoping to finish The Snow Child this weekend. I am listening to The Paris Wife which I don’t care for but am going to try and slog through. I don’t particular care for Hadley or Ernest. For fun I am also reading V is for Vengeance. Saturday there is a wine tasting at our local wine store, and Sunday we go to look at a condo my son isnthinking of buying!

  7. I agree with Kathy…that is a long time off…wow…yikes…a broken tooth? When did that happen? At least you can come home and chill…I am amazed that you have a dentist who works on Saturday…mine stops on Thursday!

Take care and good luck tomorrow…not sure what I am reading…

    1. I don’t know when the tooth cracked. I went for my cleaning in November and he showed me the crack. It’s not hurting so I figure it’s best to take care of it now. I just hate losing two days for it.

  8. I just picked up the Billy Lynn book at BN yesterday so I’m looking forward to reading it and am glad you’re enjoying it.

  9. I’m going to try and do nothing much this weekend. Feels like that cold I had over the holidays is coming back! I have both of the books you are reading on my hold list at the library, can’t wait to see what you think of them.

  10. So glad you had a good week, especially with a dental appointment on a Saturday – yuck! I’m still busy with deadlines so probably no reading this weekend (had to laugh at Jill’s comment, because I AM indexing this weekend!)

  11. I’m thinking about you and wishing you the best. Idetest having dental work done and am so sorry to hear you have to spend some time in the dentist chair. Treat yourself to something good after. Please.

I haven’t decided if I want to read Billy Lynn so I’m interested in your thoughts. I’m finishing up Cloud Atlas and reading Ninepins for my late night early morning bouts of sleeplessness. I have pretty much decided Canada by Richard Ford is going to be a rare DNF for me. I might startt Rules of Civility.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Ti!

  12. After so many years of struggling to improve my son’s organizational habits when it comes to homework, I finally let him sink or swim and have been much happier. If he forgets something at school, he has to find a way to either contact a classmate, try to complete the assignment during study hall, or he suffers the consequences. It was a tough learning experience for him but he’s definitely doing SO much better, and I’m so much happier with not having to stress about it. I actually started a similar thing with my younger daughter. She forgot her homework last week and had to miss recess because of it. I know she won’t do that again.

I’ll be curious what you think of Flight Behavior. So many people love it, but it left me feeling rather flat.

Good luck with your dental work. Dentists suck, and having to devote two Saturdays to seeing them is no fun!

  13. I know your homework pain–my youngest doesn’t have great organizational skills either, but at 17 years of age, they are finally getting better! I still ask him the age old homework questions each night when I get home from work. I am looking forward to seeing what your read along will be…but for this weekend I am still plodding through , Saplings, The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets, and Call the Midwife…

  14. Dealing with the broken tooth sounds terrible!! I really don’t like going to the matter what!! Sounds like life is getting ready to go into overdrive for your house!! Buckle up and have fun!!!

  15. I’m overdue at the dentist and I’m holding back because I just don’t like anything to do with the tooth. I hope your dental work will be over before you even know it.

  16. Ti, dental work? Ahhh! That totally sucks! Good luck with it 😉 I hate going to the dentist – it terrifies me. UGH! If I were rich, I’d find one of those fancy dentists that just knock you out and work on your teeth and then you wake up and its all done. (Or at least I’ve seen that on The Kardashian show). If only!

    1. The temp is in. Although it took them forever to get the impression right. I have to go back in two weeks for the permanent crown. I hate dental work. Plus, the tooth was not even hurting so I felt like it was not needed even though I know it was.
