It’s Friday: Random Stuff

It’s Friday and I am feeling a bit chatty so I thought, why not chat with you all on this fine, Friday morn?

It’s commencement time here at the university. The bleachers are up. The jasmine is in bloom and preparations are being made for the big event next week. I love this time of year. I graduated from this university, but it was the year of the big Northridge quake so I didn’t get to walk that year. The ceremony took place, but the school was in a shambles and I had lost my apartment, so my mind was on other things. At the time I thought that skipping it was the best choice. Seeing all the grads in their caps and gowns makes me nostalgic for what I missed, but I can’t help but be happy for them.

So what do I do? I get a job here so I can experience commencement every year. No one knows it, but when the College of Arts, Media and Communications is up on that stage, I walk the 50 feet from my office, to the commencement platform and PRETEND that it’s me. What can I say? It works.

On another note, my 17th wedding anniversary is this Saturday. Hope the RAPTURE does not interfere with my plans for an elegant, chinese dinner…out.

On my walk yesterday I tripped on the caution tape surrounding the commencement platform and dropped my Blackberry. I was out of commission for the day, but when I hit the Verizon store the guy put it back together for me with spare pieces since my contract wasn’t up until June 10th. Thank you Verizon guy. While there, The Boy got a Droid X which he paid for with his own money. I have to say, the Droid X is pretty nifty. Oh, and did you know that Verizon is ditching their $29.99 a month unlimited data plan? Yep, with the iPhone 5, they are going to a tiered plan. Ick. BTW, The Girl said that I “do not love her” because I would not buy her an iPhone last night but when I offered to buy her a Strawberry Cream Frapp with extra whip.. I became Mommy of the Year again. Frapp, iPhone… it’s the little things.

I’ve been reading all the BEA prep posts and although I am not attending, my mind is swimming from all that info. The only way to really be a good attendee is to go every year and become a pro at it. Seriously. I am a person who likes to plan WHEN she plans, so planning a trip like this one would probably send me into early retirement. I’d be too rigid and OCD about it. That I know. It’s probably a good thing I am not going because I’d be a basket case upon my return. I do hope those of you who are going have  a great time though!

Okay, off to do some work now.

  1. I’m jealous that your daughter was an easy sell. Mine would be thankful for the frap, but would still declare me the worst mom in the world unless she had a cool phone. Which isn’t in the cards until she graduates from 8th grade.

I think it is very precious that you pretend-walk the commencement march. And it makes me sad that you missed out on that. If it makes you feel any better, when I graduated my best friend and roommate’s 42 year old dad had just died the week prior. It was not a happy day for us. I’ll have to live vicariously through my kids I guess.

    1. The Berry Frapp helped but The Boy offering to let her play some game on his new phone helped more. Teamwork!

    1. Everyone dressed in their best… the love of family and friends surrounding them. Such a positive time for these grads. I seemoms carrying their babies across the stage too. So inspiring to see women out there with young families getting their degrees.

  2. Congrats on the Anniversary! Hope you have a great dinner out! Mine is on Wednesday, and it’ll be 31!

I never attended my college graduation, and don’t regret it. My 3 sons didn’t want to go to theirs either. It must run in the family!

  3. I love that you get to sort of relive graduation day every year…very cool…

Ick to what Verizon is doing…had no clue…

BEA literally scares me!!! I am imagining bloggers everywhere…I guess that is the point… I think I would overload on the huge amount of book information…I will gladly read all the posts and look at all the photos of everyone’s books, though.

  4. I’m glad you get to experience graduation every year – I think that would be cool. I hope you have a wonderful anniversary dinner out on Saturday and Happy Anniversary!

  5. WOW….so many anniversaries this w/end. Congrats Ti. Kathy, Jenners, and a few others. Ours was May 4th…LOL

Have a special weekend. I’m not going to BEA either, but will be reading all the updates. We even canceled our San Diego trip this month, as I couldn’t stand the thought of (3) airports and 7 hours flight time……fortunately my husband is just fine about not going as well.

    Have a great weekend.

  6. hey, it’s my 17th anniversary this year too! But mine is in a month, so we may not make it–considering the rapture and all. I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing day.

  7. Starbucks sounds so good. I no longer have one near me. I love the coffee frapp.

Graduation sounds lovely. The sun is out, for the first time in over a week, I can’t wait to spend the day outside but first I have to visit the grocery store to pick up food for tonight’s dinner.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  8. Happy Anniversary!

    And happy perennial graduation. 😉

I am going to BEA, but since it seems so incredibly overwhelming to try to do it perfectly, I decided to just go, experience it, and do it imperfectly. I also have friends in New York, so will be doing other things as well. Looking forward to (hopefully) snagging a few good books. 🙂

  9. Congratulations on your anniversary!
    And your annual graduation! :o)

I’m glad the rapture didn’t interfere with your anniversary celebration.
I love this time of year on college/university campuses…it’s beautiful & there’s a feeling in the air, it’s almost magical.

I love that you reclaimed the Best Mom position by getting your daughter a frappe in place of the iphone. I’m with her, it’s frappes everytime!

I think BEA is over-whelming! I’m not sure I could do all 3 days. One of these years I may find out.

    I hope you’re having a nice weekend.

  10. I wish I could buy my husband off with a strawberry frappe!!! And I am so close to BEA but the timing is just terrible. Someday I hope to attend … even though it does seem overwhelming. Maybe when my child is a little older and can be left unsupervised sometimes. (That seems like ages away.) I’m glad you got to vicariously graduate!

    1. Your little one will be independent before you know it. The Girl will be 8 in Oct and there are days where she’s so grown-up, and others where she’s hanging all over me. We’ll get time to ourselves someday.
