The Sunday Salon: Spring is in the Air

The Sunday Salon

I know some of you are still dealing with snow, but Southern California has been deliciously sunny and warm. I’m sure it won’t stick because it’s a bit early (even for us) to starting singing the praises of spring but it’s sure been nice.

This past week has been a bit of a busy blur. Basketball practices, homework packets that require deciphering, and lots of projects at work to keep me busy. So although the weather has been gorgeous, I didn’t get to enjoy it too much. However, I am usually done with whatever I am doing by dusk and there is nothing better than stepping out into a warm evening with the sun setting in the background. Everything is blooming too which makes me want to break out the flip-flops.

In between the craziness, I’ve been reading The Sweet Relief of Missing Children and I have to tell you, I am in love with this book. I could have finished it two days ago but I’ve been reading as slow as I can to stretch it out a bit.

The Indie Lit Fiction panel is finishing up their shortlist reading today and then voting on a winner. I must say, we had a very interesting batch of books. I loved the variety.

Today, The Girl was scheduled to have a playdate with her friend (the Tiger Mother would frown), but the mother never got back to me so I think we are just watching football today.

What do you have planned?

  1. Oy, that Tiger Mother sure is a tough mama. At least she seems to have recognizable hindsight about how harsh her methods were but somehow she still seems confident in them. I can’t wait to hear what you think of The Elegance of the Hedgehog (a TBR for me). Enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙂

  2. The hubby is watching football, and I am hoping to read War and Peace for the year Read Along. I am already behind. I just finished Left Neglected by Lisa Genova which I thought was great and is now overdue from the library. It was a real eye opener about a traumatic brain injury I had never heard about.

    1. War and Peace while football is on in the background? I think I’d need absolute quite for that one. Most things I can tune out but if the book is really dense and complex, I need silence. When I read Moby Dick I must have read each page at least 5 times before going ot the next one.

  3. It is a lovely day today. I’ve been thinking the same thing though–we’re probably in for another cold front soon.

The Sweet Relief of Missing Children sounds like a good book. I am glad you are enjoying it.

Today is a laundry, reading and more packing day. My husband’s decided he doesn’t want me packing books without him here since I have a tendency to forget I shouldn’t be moving the boxes on my own. :-S

I hope you have a great week!

  4. I’m in Southern Alberta and we are having such a balmy spring day today! I know its not going to last, but its brought my energy level up just a bit. I know spring is on the way.

Plans for the day: catching up on my blog and on all the other lovely book things on the net I’ve been too busy to catch up on. I love Sunday afternoons.

    1. I knew I jinxed myself by mentioning our warmer weather. It’s sort of chilly tonight and of course I got the car washed which usually guarantees that rain is just around the corner 🙂

Hope you had a nice, relaxing Sunday.

  5. Thanks for the heads up on The Sweet Relief of Missing Children. I looked it up and immediately put it on my TBR list – sounds great!

  6. I’m so interested in reading Tiger Mother…. they featured it on NPR the other week. Are you going to read it? I’m fascinated. So sad for the Girl though… I remember that feeling of looking forward to a playdate only to find out it isn’t happening.

I just saw my family off (uncle and cousins), who have been here at my house for about 10 days. Am ready to enjoy a little quiet as I clean up.

    1. 10 days? That’s a long time! You must be relaxing right now in that quiet house. I just finished an awesome book (Sweet Relief of Missing Children) and I am about to start my book club pick (Elegance of a Hedgehog). If I don’t go right into another book I stall!

  7. We actually had some sun yesterday, but today the gray skies are back. I can’t wait to see the results of the Indie Lit Awards! Have a good week, Ti.

  8. I am a bit jealous of that warm weather having experienced it a week ago while in San Diego. It’s frigid here…below zero. Just 3 more months and hopefully spring will be here in Michigan. The book you’re reading sounds wonderful and I’m glad that you’ve enjoyed the panel experience. We’re watching football too!!

  9. I’m jealous of your sunny and warm weather! It was sunny today… but we are supposed to have a low of 20 below! I think our high today was 4 and our high tomorrow is 1. Yuck!

I’m having a quiet day, relaxing and reading. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  10. The Tiger Mother would think my kids are on the fast track to rack and ruin. Personally, if I raised my kids that way, they’d be guaranteed for psychoanalysis later in life.

  11. I don’t want to hear about your weather!!!! I want it for myself.

And I’m obsessed with getting this Tiger Mother book! I just read the Time cover article on it and it sounds like there is lots to think about.
