Summer! It’s so Random!

Pimm's Cup

First off, doesn’t this drink look delish? See the little slice of cucumber? I’ve never even heard of Pimm’s before but it’s gin based and tastes of spice and citrus. When I saw this on NPR the other day, I felt the need to share it. The traditional Pimm’s Cup includes lemonade, but the photo that I included shows a variation made with pomegranate juice. Yum! I could totally see myself sipping that drink with a great book in my hand. You can view the recipe here. Thanks to NPR for the photo and the recipe.

My brain is in summer mode, but unfortunately, when you work full-time, that luscious feeling of summer doesn’t really hit you in quite the same way. I’ve been a tad stressed with the morning routine lately. Getting the little one off to day camp is difficult when she is so darn exhausted from all the fun she had the previous day. What a bear!! So by the time I get to work, I am ready for a break, but no, the boss doesn’t seem to agree so the projects keep coming.

What I’ve been trying to do is pack a nice lunch so that I can sit outside and read or hole up in somewhere to catch-up on The Hills. Yes, I watch that show and am quite addicted. If I manage to do that, the day passes nicely.

As for the weekends, I try to make it as summery as possible. Cook-outs, lots of reading, cold refreshing drinks (like the one above, which I have yet to try BTW). Anything that puts me in a summer mood because the work week sucks! There is no other word that describes how I feel.  I like my work and all that but please, it’s SUMMER! Lighten-up a bit. Life will go on.

If you are in the same boat, wanting to kick-off summer in a big way but can’t do it large-scale because work or other commitments interfere, then let’s promise to do something this weekend that’s just for us. You know, something to put us in a summery mood. You can make the drink I shared above, or you can get all girly and paint your toes some hot, summer color, or you can hit your local Starbucks (book in hand) to enjoy one of their However You Want It Frappes. The Light Soy Strawberry Frappe (no whip) is yummy! I’ve indulged in a few.

Sound like a plan? I’m not quite sure what I plan to do myself but it’s happening because this girl needs a pick-me-up!

  1. Tia,
I’m feeling you on the whole kick back and relax vibe. And yes it can be hard with kids around sometimes. Right now all I’m daydreaming about is going home, curling up on the couch with The Passage and relaxing. Enjoy readin the blog today. Thanks.

    1. Oh! I loved The Passage. I regret that I read it so early in the summer. It’s the time of book to stretch out bit.

  2. I had Pimms for the first time when I was living in London. Everyone drinks it there and though I was skeptical I figured, it’s gin, that means it has to be good. It’s delish!

  3. Enjoy your Pimm’s…my husband and I were fortunate enough to be invited to Wimbledon a few years ago…we sat at center court…and we loved Pimm’s and strawberries and cream…lots of people brought quaint little thermoses…loaded with Pimm’s Cup…or is it thermi? Hee hee hee…

    1. I have to get me some Pimm’s this weekend! Pimm’s with strawberries and cream? That sounds unbelievably good.

  4. I am all for summer drinks! When I worked, I remember what it was like. The kids are in summer mode but I wasn’t. Nobody gave me any slack! Now, I am home and we are all on a more relaxed schedule but there is no routine whatsoever. It takes some adjustment, especially when I’m used to having time to do my home jobs.

  5. That drink does look delicious! And I know what you mean – its summer, but I’m not enjoying it like I should (or at least want to). I’m definitely up for indulging in something summery this weekend. Hmmm. Perhaps I’ll paint my toe nails some funky color, make a yummy drink and read one of my magazines and just relax for a bit. And just so you know, I am a Hills fan, too! Although I do miss LC, I think she made the show better. I’m also addicted to The CIty – LOL! Well, enjoy your summer weekend, Ti!

    1. I miss LC too!! She was the sensible one. I think Lo fills that hole now to a degree, but that Kristen is a pistol! I used to watch Laguna Beach too and found it all very entertaining.

  6. Pimm’s cups are very popular in New Orleans. I had quite a few when i was there last month. I don’t know what I will be drinking tonight but there will be alcohol involved since it is Friday! I just want to relax on the porch with a nice cocktail.

And as for The Hills . . . I am addicted!

    1. Re: The Hills   I know the show is heavily scripted, but boy…does it make for good TV. That Brody is such a player and Justin Bobby…there are no words!

  7. Oh Ti…that drink does look yummy. As far as the summer kick back theme, I think you need a girlie day for yourself. Pedicure, shopping at a quaint bookstore sipping an iced coffee beverage with whipped cream. Or…take off to the beach (do you live near water?) and bring a book to read. I agree…summer is a light time for those who work during the week. After all…many places have summer hours and some make Friday a shortened day. I hope you can turn your weekends into fun and that the early morning rush gets better. HUGS!!

  8. I love Pimm’s Cup! Very summery and English. And I feel the same way about camp, the kids love it but come home exhausted! I’m trying to relax, but so far summer has been busy!

  9. Mmmm, Pimm’s Cup’s – sounds like summer in the British countryside to me. You have to try it, nothing more refreshing 🙂 Happy summer!

  10. I’ve always wondered what exactly Pimm’s was. I see it mentioned in books occasionally. Too bad all the CA bloggers aren’t closer…we could have a Pimm’s party.

  11. Oh Tina, I hope you have a nice summer:) I know that working is hard when you just want to sit and read and not get up early every day. I was wondering if that Starbucks drink was good. It sounds good. Enjoy one this weekend and hole up with that Kindle!

  12. I so agree with how you are feeling about work and summer and all that jazz. Just this past Friday, the other receptionist and I were talking about how our workplace is slowing down for the summer–especially by 1 in the afternoon, so we are going to take turns leaving early–she one week, me the next. We can work a little extra during the week so we don’t have to take it without pay–just comp our time! I think this will help my summer attitude a bit.

Oh, and that drink recipe? Gonna get me some of that by next weekend!!! It sounds so delicious. What I have done just for me, not necessarily girly though, was start a new knitting project for baby Lyddie. It is a little open front, short sleeved cardi vest. I have not made any garments except hats before so it should be an experience!
    Enjoy your Sunday–
    *smiles*
