Review: Ghettoside

Ghettoside

Ghettoside
By Jill Leovy
Spiegel & Grau, Hardcover, 9780385529983, January 2015, 384pp.

The Short of It:

An interesting look at one particular murder case in Los Angeles and how black on black crimes have been challenging detectives for years.

The Rest of It:

Ghettoside is a police procedural which covers (mostly) the murder investigation of a Los Angeles detective’s black son, who was killed by another black man while walking down the street. Leovy delves into the history of black on black crime in Los Angeles and why the cycle of black violence continues.

Focusing on the investigation, we meet detectives who have chosen to work in South Central because they firmly believe that that is where the most improvement can be made. That, in itself, was refreshing.

This book has all sorts of fascinating statistics. Those of you who eat that stuff up will find this book a quick and interesting read. But it’s a tragic read as well. So many young lives lost and we are not talking about gang members. We are talking about young kids, 13 and 14 year-olds riding their bikes down the street or kids who happened to be wearing he wrong color that day. All of them black on black crimes which to this day puzzle law enforcement.

What can be done? One detective in particular goes out of his way to take that extra step with the hope of breaking the cycle and as a reader, you suddenly realize how overwhelmingly hopeless the situation must be. At the same time though, one life saved is still something, right? You can’t really put a price on that.

It’s a tough topic but an important one and even with all the stats I breezed through it. My book club discusses it later this week so we’ll see what they have to say about it.

Sunday Matters: Pixie Dust and Rain

Sunday Matters

Production week for Peter Pan ends with tonight’s seven o’clock performance. The Girl will be sad about it ending but track starts Monday. Yep, this Monday so she won’t have much time to think about it.

Right Now:

We’ve got church in the morning but the middle-school ministry is not meeting since they are at winter camp, so I have the evening off. The Girl does not though as she will be on stage. I am usually backstage with her but something happened with the scheduling this time around and it didn’t work out. I’ve worked every closing show for so many years I am not even sure what I will do with myself.

This Week:

I have a referral for my foot first thing Monday morning. It feels so much better but something is not healing right because my foot clicks when I walk. Clicks and pops and feels like it’s going to give out. It’s a really weird feeling. Like, piano wire getting tangled up. The x-ray taken this week shows a somewhat fresh break and this happened over a month ago so it really shouldn’t look like that. But other than the foot, I feel great!! Still living on my sleep stores from winter break.

Nothing else going on except track practices and a book club meeting to discuss Ghettoside.

Reading:

Right now, I am reading Lost & Found and it’s just so quirky and fun but also a little deep. It reminds me of Where’d You Go, Bernadette which I absolutely loved.

Lost & Found

Watching:

I haven’t been watching too much of anything lately.

Making:

Sigh. Making stuff requires a trip to the market and I’m really not feeling it. Plus, I received a really crazy weather alert on my phone which made it sound like some pretty severe weather is coming our way. If I go though, I will probably pick up soup fixings.

Grateful for:

Talented kids. I love, love, love that my kids are into the arts. I love to see them on stage. It just fills me with joy.
