The Graduates

Emma the Graduate

I share pics on Instagram and Facebook but for those who do not follow me there, here are some photos of my graduates! Emma graduated from high school last night. It was a lovely, brief, in-person ceremony. The song the senior choir members sang really choked me up. Her next stop is Missouri State in August.

Evan the Graduate.

Evan graduates from Cal Poly SLO next week. He will be coming home in a little while, staying for a short while and then heading to Kansas for AmeriCorps.

God, we love these kids. It was hard to see my son off to college but he was a transfer student and had already done the Disney College Program in Orlando so we had a taste of him being away, plus his university is a three hour drive from us. But Emma’s school will be a 20 hour drive. Not as easy to pop-in for a visit, for sure. I will miss seeing all her shows but we will try to attend a few now and then.

These next few months will be a rollercoaster of emotions for me. I know many other parents going through the same emotions right now so there are plenty of pals to have Margaritas with but wow, you figure this time will come but even though you prepare yourself for it, it’s a doozy.

Congratulations to my grads and to all those graduating this year. It was a year, wasn’t it? We never thought the pandemic would carry over into this year too. Boy, did it.

  1. I’m not sure how you can prepare yourself for that, but even if you take the time to do it, it’s probably hard regardless of the preparation. Evan looks so grown up! I wish them both luck.

  2. Congratulations to both grads! They are good-looking kids and I’m sure they both make you very proud. I remember sending my daughter off to college (TCU), but she did well and my husband and I embraced our empty-nest. Thank goodness for cell phones and the Internet. Can you imagine having to wait for a snail-mail letter or a long distance phone call, after 7pm? You’ll do fine. Lean on your friends if you hit a rough patch. {hugs}

    1. Thank you. Part of it too is that I always thought that both would end up at the university I work for. My son is at a CSU so I took advantage of that tuition fee waiver but it was never to be for my daughter. The CSUs do not have good musical theatre programs. She is such a California kid with beaches and the sun and the like. Sigh. I just need to get through August. I am going to set up a wine date with a friend right now. Haha!

    1. Aw, thank you!! 2021-2022 will be a year of change so I hope the transition is a smooth one. I mean, they’ve had to pivot plenty the last two years so they should be good at it now. 🙂

  3. You guys must feel so proud. Beautiful young adults (Evan looks great with the facial hair – so different from previous pics I remember and Emma is lovely. CONGRATS!

  4. It’s so fun to watch your kids grow up through this blog; I’ve enjoyed all their escapades and can’t wait to see what they accomplish along their new journeys.

  5. Wow gorgeous pics of these two graduates. It’s a bit sad but exciting too. Congrats to all of you. They persevered during the pandemic to complete their courses. You might need plenty of margaritas in the future.

    1. I feel sad that my son never really had the transfer experience he wanted. He was in campus housing for only one semester before he was sent home. He did rent a room with other students at some point but he has hardly been on campus since he transferred. And my daughter’s senior year was spent nearly entirely at home. Thankful for the in-person graduation though. So rough on them.

  6. Congratulations to both of them, and good luck on officially transitioning to an empty nest! Everyone adjusts to it differently, from what I have seen. I’m sure you will too once the dust settles. I will be curious how Emma does in Missouri having been born and raised in SoCal. The Midwest and California are two very different experiences. Hopefully, she gets a wonderful roommate who will help ease her own transition!

    1. She chose her roommate long ago! Also on musical theatre. She is from Arkansas! Sweetest girl and her family is so sweet too. The entire freshman class knows each other and most are in the same form building. Well, there is only 15 or so on the class.
