Feeling Pensive

New York City

Everything seems to be happening quickly these days. Senior year will do that to a person. The Teen is currently on a trip to New York City for choir. The show he is in, Little Shop of Horrors is at the end of April, prom is in a little over two weeks, there’s a choir concert coming up, a banquet, some festivals to participate in and then graduation will be upon us.

Where did the time go?

The Girl is wrapping up 7th with her choir festival, numerous track meets and we are already thinking about summer camp. SO much is on my mind these days.

Plus, my boss quit. I’ll just leave it at that.

It’s funny because I go from thinking about college stuff, to thinking about how I really need a new purse. My mind is not able to focus on any one task for very long. I need an hour or two to just stare blankly at a wall.

This is where reading is such a blessing. You’d think that my brain’s lack of focus would not bode well on the reading front, but quite the opposite. All this nervous energy has me racing through books. Good ones, too. I just finished Hour of the Bees which was surprisingly good given its magical elements (not usually a fan).  I am currently reading Tuesday Nights in 1980  and it’s good so far. I am thinking about picking up Walden.  I picked up a copy and it’s been staring me in the face for a couple of months.

Walden

I’m not sure what the next few weeks will bring but I can’t tell you how much all of your comments mean to me. I am blessed to be able to connect with so many of you via social media because seriously, hearing from you guys makes me smile each and every time.

Plus, there are always books to discuss. Am I right?  I’m counting on it because as one leaves the nest, I may be a puddle of goo by the time all this is said and done.

  1. I have Tuesday Nights in 1980 on my Nook and hope to start it soon. Glad that books and the blogosphere are a good distraction from the other stuff that’s making your mind whirl!

    1. I am about halfway through with Tuesday Nights in 1980 but I am really loving it so far. I love the art scene and it’s set in New York. Really makes me want to paint something. Oh, and I can’t paint. That tells you something.

  2. The last year of high school is so bittersweet. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s tough when a kid leaves home but you get used to it pretty quickly. It’s what you’ve been working toward for years so, in the end, it’s all good.

    1. You know what blows my mind? Is that it seems like just yesterday that I was graduation from high school and I don’t remember any of the fanfare that exists now. I graduated, got a job, went to school. No drama. These days the decisions seem to be overwhelming to both him and me. Not sure why.

  3. I can’t even imagine your range of emotions…especially with him in NYC without you! There is no end to what you will experience with one leaving and one starting that same path! At least you won’t have two in college at the same time…I think! You are basically focused and great at thinking out of the box and in every direction. I guess you just have to stay healthy and deal with things as they come?

Seriously…I am a good listener but lousy at advice so I will just say…good luck?

    1. You are a good listener. Thanks so much. I am okay. Not sad or anything. Just feel as if time is going by too fast. I mean, it’s already April which blows my mind. Next month… graduation. Goodness.

  4. Quite a hectic schedule u have and I bet it’s exciting too, to see your children doing so well and you have a grad in the house. On another note, I visited Walden Pond last fall and it was beautiful.

  5. Oh Ti–I’m sure that the next couple of months will be a whirlwind for you. I remember how my mom was when I went off to college (all the way in Idaho!)–my mom said she couldn’t even go into my room. It’s ok to be goo–there’s a lot going on emotionally for all of you, I’m sure.

Reading is sometimes too complicated for my brain. When it’s too much, cross-stitch seems to help. Any kind of repetitive task that doesn’t require thinking.

    Hugs to you!!!!

    1. Thank you. I am just all over the place with my thoughts these days. I am really okay with him going away to school if that is what ends up happening. I just feel like it came up so fast.

  6. Ti, I can’t even begin to imagine how you are feeling with everything happening – especially as it all seems to happen so fast nowadays. Being a puddle of goo at the end of it all sounds about right to me 🙂 I think its awesome The Teen’s in NYC – how exciting for him and his choir group. As for all that reading – books really are the best medicine. I have that 1980 book on my kindle – sounds like it will be a good read. I’ve never read Walden, but hear its great – Enjoy! Right now I’m reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert – so far, I’m really enjoying it. I’ve been in the mood for inspirational type books lately to help get my creative juices flowing again. Fingers crossed they inspire me.

  7. I am in a similar place right now. My mind is all over the place. I need to make more time to read because when I do, it helps calm my brain. I hope everything goes well for you and your family in the coming weeks. So much excitement! Your kids are amazing.

  8. It will all settle soon!! It’s amazing reading how much you have going for you and how you get a lot of reading done. I agree – thank goodness for books. I find that I do read a lot when things get busy. That reading time totally saves my day.

    1. Yes, reading saves me more times than not. I will be at a track meet during the read a thon but in my head I am trying to figure out a way to make it work. I tried once before during track season and wasn’t successful. Are you doing the read a thon?

      1. I don’t know yet! I would like to, which means I better start planning for that now itself or else no reading will happen. Usually, Saturdays are my catch up days or do something outside days so that my Sunday can be filled with reading.

  9. That’s a busy busy life you have there, but I know the feeling. The boss quit, you filling in?! Applying? **wink wink**

I’m only kidding about that. Walden is wonderful by the way.

  10. My oldest is only four, and I already have sad feelings thinking about her leaving for college. 🙂 And believe me when I say I know the horrors of the boss quitting. Bah.

  11. My only advice about having a senior is to make sure you don’t get so wrapped up in something being the “last” that you forget to actually enjoy the moments.

  12. I think you’re experiencing a little premature separation anxiety, my friend, which I can understand only too well. My kid is still 7 years away from the moment when he’ll have to leave the nest, and I’m already getting those unpleasant shivers at the thought of it. Big hug ❤

    1. The dog is so confused right now because every time the Teen calls, I put him on speaker phone so now the dog thinks he is somewhere in the house and keeps looking for him. He returns Tuesday night.

  13. What’s the deal with your boss quitting? Was it for another job? Will it throw your dept in chaos? good luck with weathering the tides … I know how that goes.

  14. Walden…..I tried this in Grad school and all you need to know is: a man sits in the woods for two years by himself. The book made my brain shrivel up and blow away in the wind. BUT, maybe you will find more joy in it than I did. Some people love it. LoL.

I send positive thoughts your way for all you’re dealt with. I truly sympathize and understand how you feel. We all go through these moments. There’s so much going on that makes my head spin, when only crave reading time–but never get it.

I hope things look up for you.
