Sunday Matters: Time for Reflection

Sunday Matters

I almost didn’t post today but as it turns out, I have a few minutes to reflect on the week so while the Green Bay game plays on in the background, I am sitting here typing away.

Did you have a good week? Mine was pretty good. I feel like I accomplished a lot. Every to-do item on my list was checked off by Friday and that was a nice way to end the week.

And, I finally started painting The Girl’s room. It’s halfway done! Progress. The paint color is Tahitian Breeze by Behr. I love vaulted ceilings but painting them is a bit of a challenge. Honestly, my legs are sore from going up and down that ladder.

Painting

Right Now:

Green Bay is playing so The Hub is glued to the TV. We just finished dinner (chili and cornbread) and there’s plenty for leftovers throughout the week. After this, I have to get my stuff ready for the week and then I will settle down to watch some TV.

This Week:

This is audition week for Peter Pan. Tuesday and Wednesday will be exciting days. The Girl is trying out for a Lost Boy (Curly) and Tiger Lily’s friend Talking Rain or Whispering Leaves, I can’t remember which.  She’s been dancing and singing all over the house.

Reading:

I am about halfway through with Finders Keepers by Stephen King. It’s good but there’s something about it that isn’t sitting right with me.

I just started The Boys in the Boat for book club. I have about a week and a half to read it. October is sneaking up on me. I hope I finish it in time because it was my club pick.

Watching:

On Friday night The Girl and I hunkered down with Sleepless in Seattle. I’ve seen it soooo many times but I love it. I also managed to slip in The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles!! Then, tonight, it’s Fear the Walking Dead. I hope the Green Bay game ends by the time it starts or there will be words. JK.

Making:

Chili. Turkey chili which was delicious but it was 105 degrees when I left church this evening so it’s not quite chili weather. Still, it was quite good.

Grateful for:

I’ve been challenged a lot lately both at work and in my personal life. At first, I experience a tiny moment of pure fear. You know the type I am talking about. The type where you spend fifteen minutes hyperventilating and panicking about not knowing enough. But then something happens and I kick it into gear and all seems right with the world. I have learned SO MUCH these past six months. I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to rise and succeed. It’s  a very good feeling.

What are you grateful for this week?

  1. I love your gratitude section when you do these update posts. I must think about including something like that. And good for you and hugs. Chili does sound good, but it’s still too hot here. I am going to make a roast in the crockpot this week. Loved your movie choices. Have a good week, Ti. Hope your girlie get the part she wants in Peter Pan. Take care of yourself and I also love the color in her room. Very bright and refreshing!

    1. I love the gratitude section. Sometimes it’s hard to think of something to write but that is the entire point of it, to remember things that you are grateful for. With our busy lives, days blur and the details get all fuzzy but we should always remember the good stuff.

Crock-pot roasts are the best! Today it is supposed to be very warm again but tomorrow we are expecting thunderstorms. I hope we get some rain. The last time we had a thunderstorm, we got plenty of lightning and fires from it and a good downpour which thankfully put the fires right out.

    1. This paint color is deceiving. It looks very minty at night but very sky like during the day. It has a very soothing effect. I wanted a pale, ice blue but she didn’t want to go that route.

  2. Your schedule does me in, too. When I was teaching…I had that same feeling you have of racing around…trying to do everything…but I did not have kids to monitor the way you do…and Den was most likely traveling…so…it was a matter of coming home from an exhausting day…eating soup…and chillaxing with Lucy…I do not know how you manage all of it…I was still always exhausted!

We are getting unexpected guests this week end so I am mildly freaking out over that but other wise…I am just thankful for peace filled relaxing days…

    Love that paint color!

    1. Well, my doctor told me that on the outside I hold it together well. But on the inside all the rushing around affects my health. I’ve tried to cut back on things but I have two busy kids and they don’t even do nearly as much as they used to. The Teen graduates in May so his stuff will slow down a bit but the girl is picking up all his stuff with choir and theater so it’s going to be a few more years of rushing around.

  3. Ah, I’m just grateful we got through it… It was an interesting, emotionally-charged week over here. Glad your was better 🙂 How’s you chili recipe? Would you consider sharing your culinary secrets with yours truly? 😉

    1. I hope this week goes better for you.

My chili recipe is super easy and super good.

Add this to a 5-6 quart CrockPot:

2.5 lbs of browned ground turkey 2 smallish cans of diced green chiles.. I think they were 4 ounces each. 2 15 ounce cans of a good quality diced canned tomatoes, with juice. 2 15 ounce cans of beans (can be any kind, we use pinto, drained and rinsed) 2 Pkgs of your fave taco seasoning. We use a Old El Paso, one low sodium and one spicy. 1 large chopped onion, sauteed with some olive oil or butter. 1 head of garlic, chopped. I sauteed half and put the other half in the Crock, raw for extra flavor.

No water needed. Put it in the Crock Pot, give it a stir and set it on low for 5-6 hours.

That’s it! Sometimes I add canned corn. Sometimes I use beef instead of turkey but it always comes out perfect.

  4. The color of The Girl’s room is the color of my bedroom. How funny! I’m sure she is going to love it.

I am sorry to hear about things at work. I know exactly what you mean about that moment of panic. I still get that whenever my manager goes behind closed doors with someone in my chain of command. Too many bad experiences that my mind immediately leaps to “Oh, shit” whenever it happens. It takes me a few minutes to calm back down too. I hope you have a great week, and if you ever need to talk during the day, I usually answer email, if I’m not in a meeting…

  5. I’m trying to imagine me painting my daughter’s room . . . I imagine it will happen at some point, but I’m going to avoid it as long as possible. Especially since she probably will want it to be pink.

Chili and cornbread sound really good right about now. I’m going to have to ask my husband if we can have chili sometime soon.

I hope auditions go well for your daughter! Is it weird that every time I see Peter Pan at Disneyland, I’m always surprised he’s not a woman.

I hope you have a great week!

  6. Nice job on the painting! Looks like it will be a pretty color. Good luck to The Girl on Peter Pan. It sounds exciting. I will be interested to hear what you think about on The Boys in the Boat. I’m supposed to read that author’s earlier book on the Donner Party for a tour. cheers.

    1. He wrote The Donner Party?? I am a little clueless on previous works. I am only 10% into Boys and I really need to get it read because we meet on Thursday and it was my pick so I have to lead the discussion.

  7. Great job on The Girls room. Painting makes everything so brand new again. I know what you mean by that feeling of panic. I’m glad you were able to rise above it. Love the movies you watched and Fear the Walking Dead I really really like. Anyhow hope your week is good and you’re finding some time to take care of you.

    1. Thank you! I am just so darn busy at work. I am ready for a break. I have to finish painting the room this weekend. The rest of it will be easy to put together.

  8. I know I’m late responding on your blog, which I’m sure you’ve guessed why. I’m grateful for supportive family and friends given the passing of my grandmother. It’s been a really tough road for her these last months, and I know that she’s finally at peace and reunited with my grandfather, the love of her life.

Sounds like you’ve been having a busy time at work too!

    1. Oh yes. I know you’ve had a rough couple of weeks. How are you doing? You seem to be holding up well. It’s hard to lose a loved one. It doesn’t sink in for a really long time. It didn’t with my dad when he passed earlier this year.

  9. I’ve been listening to Finders Keepers on audio and I think I am actually liking it better than the first one! Unfortunately it’s from the library and expired so I have to go back on the wait list to hear the rest, lol.

    1. Oh Jenny! I messed up a little with my reading schedule, so I had to put Finders Keepers down to finish my book club book, but I hope to get back to it soon. I am glad you like it so far. I like it, but then there are slow parts that don’t seem to be holding my interest.
