It’s a Birthday Kind of Day!

Birthday Girl - Then/Now 2014

It’s been a little quiet on the blog. I took the last couple of days off because my kids are on Fall break AND because today happens to be The Girl’s birthday! She is now an eleven-year-old, phone-toting, gal. Yep! I finally caved and got her a phone.

Yesterday, we tooled around town, had lunch and then came back to watch a movie. Today, The Teen was supposed to have an all-day rehearsal for The 39 Steps but the drama teacher’s kid is not feeling well so he is off today as well. I just made blueberry scones. The Girl just opened up her presents and now we are about to make her cake!

She saw this cake on the Real Girl’s Kitchen:

This cake just happens to be gluten-free. We are putting it together now. Later, we are heading out to a steak house for dinner because that is what The Girl wants, and then we will come home to eat the cake! Click on the photo if you’d like the recipe.

That is my day. There might be more movie watching and reading in there too and of course later, the final cast list for Annie comes out. I sure hope she gets a part and that The Teen gets what he wants as well.

Have a good day!

  1. What a fun day! (If everyone gets the parts they want of course…fingers crossed.) Happy birthday to your daughter!

    1. The cake was amazingly good. So moist and not that sweet which was good since the icing was very sweet. I could even eat that cake with just some whipped topping or raspberry sauce. It was just so moist. My husband had two huge slices as did The Girl. She was so full she had trouble, sleeping last night.

  2. Happy birthday sweet girl! Oh man–the cell phone. 😉

And I’m sure you’re all sitting on pins and needles about the casting. Can’t wait to hear! Fingers and toes crossed for everyone.

    1. We got the cast list. A high, and a low. The Teen got Rooster, which is the part he wanted. The Girl ended up with a dance part so she did not make one of the orphans. She was very upset with it being her birthday and all but in the end, I think she will be fine. She is rather tall for an orphan. She really wanted a speaking role this time. They all want those microphones.

    1. The cake was a big hit. Who knew that black beans could make a cake so moist? The Girl ate two huge slices and then could not sleep. Said she wanted more.

  3. Happy Birthday to the Girl!! Sounds like she has been having a wonderful birthday 🙂 That cake looks delicious – who wouldn’t want it for their bday!?!

  4. I have had black bean brownies and they were really good, and of course then there is zucchini cake and carrot cake. Amazing how “alternate” ingredients can be so delicious in desserts!

  5. Happy birthday to your daughter! My daughter has four or five phones now, I think. And yet she uses other non-phone toys when she pretends to talk on the phone. I don’t even want to think about when she’ll be ready for a real phone . . .

    The cake looks delicious.

    1. The Teen had a phone when he was 9, because of his activities but it was just a flip phone and cost me $9 a month. The same cannot be said for The Girl. She is in 6th and everyone, everyone she knows, has a phone and when I say phone, I mean the real deal. I put her off for a long time but I finally caved. It’s mostly locked down and to be honest, I am amazed at the innocence. She takes photos of her Mickey ears, her stuffed animals, etc. It’s all very sweet. I tried very hard to keep her from it but in this day and age, it’s difficult. She had to have a phone because of her activities and my need to contact her sometimes but I could not justify a flip phone for her and really, you can’t even find them anymore.

  6. Hope the Girl had a wonderful birthday and got an Annie callback again. Sounds nice. Like the cake photo too….

    1. The Girl ended up getting a dancing role. She won’t be an orphan, after all. The Teen got Rooster though which is the part he wanted (Miss Hannigan’s cheating brother). I am happy they both got parts.

  7. A belated birthday greeting to your girl, so eager for life. And soon you’ll have a girl teenager in the house. But she looks just fine. And, a black bean cake? Umm, hope it turned out delicious. 😉

    1. The black bean cake was the best cake we’ve had in a long, long time. Amazing how good it is. You’d never know it was made with 30 oz of black beans.
