The Sunday Salon: Weekends Are Made of This

Sunday Salon

Reading, relaxing, cooking, lots and lots of TV and movie watching and yes…some creeping crud that seems to have found me. It doesn’t seem fair to finally have a long weekend and half of it is spent battling some weird virus but I’d rather be home fighting it than at work. So, there’s that.

Despite the crud, the weekend has been nice. We barbecued and relaxed and between The Walking Dead marathon and the Twilight Zone marathon, there has been plenty of TV watching.

What am I reading?

I had visions of spending the entire weekend reading but of course that didn’t happen. However, I am home now and done with everything I need to do so I am hoping to hang out on the couch with The Regulators or The Goldfinch. I just cannot get through The Goldfinch. It is just so darn slow. I have been singing the same song on that one for two weeks now. I need to just suck it up and get it read.

What am I cooking?

Nothing. After grilling burgers and dogs on the fourth, we’ve been eating leftovers and snacks. That is probably what we’ll do tonight too. Sometimes, all you need is cold, crisp watermelon. Especially in this heat!

What am I watching?

At the moment, nothing. The Girl wants to continue with Lost but really, I just want to lie down. My throat is all swollen and although I don’t feel all that bad, the size of my lymph nodes is a little annoying.

The Way, Way Back

I did manage to watch The Way, Way Back. I really liked it. Quirky, good performances and a summertime setting.

Well, I am off to take a nap or something. Have a good one!

  1. I have had the crud for 8 days now. Yesterday was the first day I’d gotten out of bed and actually felt human. I’m still blowing my nose and coughing like mad but I think its on its way out of me…finally. I hope you don’t suffer as long as I did and I’m sorry it put a damper on your weekend. Take care and feel better soon. Oh, and I haven’t read a page since I’ve been sick. 😦

  2. You know you don’t have to suck it up and get it read…if it’s not grabbing you, it’s obviously not grabbing you for a reason and there are other books (better for you, maybe not for everyone) to read out there. Okay…off my soapbox now.

The crud is going around, sadly. My father and aunt have it this weekend, from what I hear.

I keep forgetting about The Way, Way Back…thanks for reminding me. We’ll have to check Redbox for that.

  3. I had to put down The Goldfinch; it was just too slow and I have a stack of more appealing books to read 😃

  4. I know this is selfish, but I am glad I am not the only one who struggled with Goldfinch. I may have made more of an attempt on that one if I were reading it for a book club, but still I was reading it for a readalong and had to bail out. It was excruciatingly slow and boring.

  5. It sounds like you have strep throat. I just got over that and it sucks. It seems like it’s going around. I hope you feel better!

I feel like you do about The Goldfinch just with another couple of books. I’m sticking with Three Bargains, but not much else has grabbed me. :/ book hangovers are aweful.

    Again, feel better soon!

  6. Tina I hope you feel better soon! I have been struggling with a cold and chest infection for 3 weeks now – it sure is persistent (but it is winter here, so it at least seems appropriate!). I was very disappointed with “The Goldfinch” and don’t understand all the fuss; I adore “The Secret History” but feel that this was a lost opportunity. Ah well, they can’t all be gems 🙂

It was hard to see Carrell play a dirt bag. It was a little bit of a stretch for him, I think.

  7. We have had the best fruit ever this season…watermelon and cantelope have been luscious…feel better soon…

  8. Boo! Hope you’re feeling better soon. Nothing worse than being sick in the summer. We’ve been barbecuing as well and just finished the last of the leftovers today. Always sad when it’s gone and I have to cook something new. LOL! I haven’t seen The Way Way Back but I’ve been wanting to. We watched The Grand Budapest Hotel last night. Enjoyed it but assume it won’t translate to a large audience.

Hope you have a great week!

    1. I want to see The Grand Budapest Hotel, too.  The Way Way Back was really good. I was feeling crappy when I watched it and I managed to  forget about my misery the entire time it ran so that’s good.

  9. Sounds like a busy tv watching weekend. I actually got some good reading done…some light reading for summer fun and a book I wanted to read in June but never got to. As for TV, we watched The Counselor. It was good but strange. This is the week I can get to the library and pick up Regulators to join you in your reading!

    1. Isn’t The Counselor the movie with the very strange Cameron Diaz scene that everyone was talking about?

  10. Oh, no! Sorry you got sick on the long weekend. Hope you’re feeling better today. Why is it we always overestimate the amount of reading we’ll do? Guess it’s mostly wishful thinking…

    1. I made-up for the reading last night. I tried to take a nap and it ended up being a really short one so then I read right into the evening. Got a good chunk of Goldfinch read. I feel better now.

  11. Hope you are feeling better soon. Thank you for the movie tip. We are really struggling to find movies we both want to see. So annoying when we can’t agree to watch. Seems like forever since I have really enjoyed a movie.

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I love sharing King with those who have never read him before.

  12. Sometimes I think we get sick on those longer breaks because our bodies is finally allowed to break down. Otherwise, we just keep pushing. Hope you’re feeling better! Where are you stuck at in The Goldfinch – Vegas by any chance?
