The Sunday Salon: Are You Ready for 2014?

Sunday Salon

It’s taken me until now to realize that it’s Sunday. My clock is off. Always happens when I am off for a long period of time! Well, the day started off lovely but now The Girl is tossing her cookies. I knew something was up after she got up two times last night. She never gets up and when she did, not once, but twice, the first thing I said to The Hub was, “God, I hope she’s not sick.” Oh well! She’s perky. No fever. I have her camped out on the couch right now, just to be safe.

We didn’t have plans today anyway. In fact, my plan for the entire week is to just camp out here, but the kids might have something to say about that. Both the kids and Hub cannot lie low for any length of time. They get antsy. Me? I could hole up on the couch for days on end. Just throw some snacks at me every now and then, maybe some iced tea to go with them and I am good to go.

By the way, it’s like summer here. So Cal can be very unpredictable this time of year. We have a wind warning and man, is it windy! But it’s warm and sunny and so NOT like December. My Christmas stuff is still up and will be until after the new year. Speaking of which, The Teen is going to a New Year’s Eve party at the church he attends. Yes, he attends a different one than we do. Long Story I think we plan to order Chinese food and just hang out at home. New Year’s day will be spent at home as well.

Are you ready for the new year? I enjoy a fresh start and have already cleared out some clutter from the year. Also, between you and me, I really like the even years. I am hoping 2014 is a good year. I’d like to spend more time as a family and not be so stressed from extra-curricular activities and all the back and forth that goes with them. I’d like certain members of the household to be a little more responsible when it comes to schedules. YOU know who you are.

What am I reading?

I took a year off from book club and have been thinking about attending again. The book for this Thursday’s meeting is Canada by Richard Ford. I’ve never read him before but I started Canada yesterday and I am about 60% done. I am enjoying it but the last chunk is not as enjoyable as the first half.

I got my Goodreads year-end report the other day and noticed the numbers were off so then I had to go through alllll of my reviews to see which ones I forgot to add. I HATE that. Now my stats report is off for the year. What can you do? My numbers were down anyway. I hope this year will be a better year for reading. I just wasn’t into reading this past year. Funny, coming from a book blogger.

What am I cooking?

The weather is like summer so we will be grilling these ginormous steaks I picked up. And to go with them? Nothing less than ginormous baked potatoes and buttered green beans. I’ll be careful eating the potato. By the way, my throat is feeling much better. Not sure if The Girl will be able to eat but I’ll fix some soup for her if she can’t.

What am I watching?

We’ve been watching a lot of movies. Mostly, stuff we have on Netflix. We saw The Great Outdoors and Only You (Robert Downey Jr. version) last night. Oh, we also saw Death Becomes Her. Remember that one? It’s so old. I’d like to see a drama tonight but The Girl is all about comedy and rarely lets us see a drama. I’d also be okay watching back-to-back episodes of The Wonder Years. I love that show.

What are you doing today?

  1. So sorry she is sick…it is freaky rainy cold here…we are reading and football watching…having nachos later. Starting a new book in minutes!

  2. My husband’s family in Pennsylvania are all sick with the flu. It is going around. I have been busy writing posts for upcoming giveaways. And now am off to finish WHITE DOG FELL FROM THE SKY. It is a good one. You are right about CANADA. First half much better than second.

    1. It’s a testament on how hard people work these days that as soon as they get a little down time, they fall ill. My daughter seems fine today but she says she feels worse. Ugh.

  3. I’m sorry to hear about The Girl. 😦 However, I can relate to being just as comfortable holing up on the couch and having snack thrown at me. I prefer potato chips by the way to rotten apples. 😉 Tonight, we’ll be doing just that, not the rotten apple throwing, but holing up on the couch as it’s snowing outside and the roads aren’t too good, according to the NWS.

  4. I’m with you – I’d stay home a lot more than we do if I had my way. There are just a lot of things I enjoy doing around here. I do appreciate the Big Guy dragging me out of the house as often as he does or I could really become a hermit in the winter. Take care with that potato!

  5. Torrential rain and winds here, might be freezing rain tonight…yikes. I’ll trade weather with you.

I’ve been off since the 20th and just vegging way too much and consuming holiday left–overs UGH. Time with granddaughter today, lunch with friends tomorrow, new years eve, early movie and Chinese food.

Enjoy the rest of your time off — no diff plans for 2014 really.

  6. I find myself running around a lot…but think I need to work on staying home more and appreciating time away from all the hustle and bustle…it is also a lot cheaper to stay at home, I am thinking.

  7. I hope the girl feels better soon! Never fun to be sick while on break–seems like such a waste! And I wish I could send my boy and girls to hang out with yours…they’re the same. Go stir crazy at the house for too long but I LOVE being home…especially if I can be productive (and yes, sometimes productive looks like lying on the couch with a book and coffee).

Hope you have a wonderful new year. Decluttering. Sigh. That’s high on my to-do list.

  8. Oh we’ve been very healthy here lately. The kids, however, will come down with a deadly flu a day before school starts. Mark my words. It is like summer here too…80 degrees today. I am sick to death of it. I think it is supposed to cool down, but we’ll see. All day, every day, I’m still running around like a maniac. I really need to sit down and not move for a day.

  9. I spent the day de-Christmasing the house so I am ready for the new year. I don’t think I can declutter until the boys leave. I do like to stay home some but, like your husband and kids, I get antsy after a while.

  10. Get well soon wishes to The Girl. It’s raining heavily here and I’m thrilled. I love a rainy, howling wind, ghost story type of day as long as I don’t have to travel in it. As for reading, I’m in the middle of The Art of Fielding but I’m very antsy to start The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

  11. You started reading Canada yesterday and you’re 60% done? Wow you’re a fast reader. It will probably take me a couple of weeks to finish that. Anyway, you have fine weather there, prob. the best in all of N.A. However, I’m just thankful I don’t have to deal with an ice storm as they do in the East Coast. So, to more book chatters in 2014, A Happy New Year to you, Ti!

    1. I can be a fast reader when the book is good but if it’s slow or plodding, I drag my feet.

Happy New Year! I know it’s not here yet but it feels like it to me.

  12. Oh no! I hope The Girl gets to feeling better soon! Nothing is worse than being sick on a holiday break.

I plan on sitting on the couch most of this week, reading and relaxing, playing a few games with my kids. I’m looking forward to it! I still have not looked over my stats for the year yet, but that’s also on my list of things to do this week.

And, funny thing … I just watched Death Becomes Her on TV a few weeks ago! It had been ages and I forgot how silly that movie is! I needed that laugh!!

    1. The Girl seems better but she tells me she feels worse. Go figure,

I may have to leave the house today to hit the library and to take my son to rehearsal. Not sure yet. Especially since the girl is now telling me she feels worse.

  13. Amazingly, I finished my GR reading goal this year — with some help from Wiggles’ picture books that she got for review…don’t ask me… 🙂

I wish I had your weather…i love warm weather and could do without the flip flopping here between cold and warm.

    1. Way to go on reaching your goal. I don’t plan to set any goals for the new year as far as reading. I just want to enjoy my reading and whatever I end up with in numbers, is fine by me.

  14. How did you get your goodreads report?

Holing up in a corner for a week sounds like heaven to me too but the husband won’t agree with me either. Happy New Year, Ti!
