It’s a little earlier this year but this is the one reading challenge I look forward to all year long. Why? Because it’s fun and totally doable! Carl of Stainless Steel Droppings has thought this one through. There is a participation level for everyone so there is absolutely no reason not to join in on the fun. Â It’s called R.I.P. VIII which stands for Readers Imbibing in Peril. How cool is that?
Full details can be found on the blog, but this is the gist of it. You read books or watch movies from any of these genres:
- Mystery
- Suspense
- Thriller
- Dark Fantasy
- Gothic
- Horror
- Supernatural
Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above.
The challenge begins on September 1, 2013 and runs through October 31, 2013.
The rules:
- Have fun reading (and watching).
- Share that fun with others.
I plan to participate on two levels. Read the captions for descriptions:
I don’t know exactly what I will read, but I am guessing the new King book will be one of them and possibly Setterfield’s new one. I could easily read more as this is my favorite time of the year and I love this challenge, but I also want to be realistic. I do believe I can succeed with what I’ve committed to here.
Possible reading choices:
Possible movie choices:
Doesn’t it sound like fun? Do you want to join? If so, head to Carl’s blog for details! I cannot wait! All I need is a creaky floor, some wind in the trees and the sound of a coyote howling in the background…
Spooky movies do add to the Halloween time of year — enjoy the challenge, it is always so fun.
Have fun with the challenge!
I’m looking forward to Bellman & Black, too! Guess I’d better get busy making my list…
I joined in last year for the first time. This fall, I seem to have less time for blogging than usual. So I’m not sure yet. 😦
Or perhaps even better, it’s an excuse to take House of Leaves off the shelf, dust it off, and finally start reading that.
I love this challenge so much. And it makes me a little distressed because all I really want to do is lock myself up somewhere and read about 8 or 10 spooky books that are on my list. There is so much to get excited about here! And it seriously makes me want to reprioritize my reading life.
I am taking tomorrow and Friday off and that is exactly what I plan to do. I am just going to hole up on the couch with a stack of books. I know I won’t get far, as I get too distracted but that is the plan.

I love this challenge, too…except that I have that darn fear of commitment!
Last year I signed up for Peril the Screen and shockingly failed at that – how do you not even accidentally end up watching a movie in October that will fit in? So this year I’m not signing up for it but will probably end up watching something. I am going to join but I’m only committing to one book – now that should be doable!
I am hoping to read Bellman & Black as well. 🙂
Ooh, this seems like fun. I will be sure to check out the sign up post in the morning. I look forward to hearing what you think of Bellman and Black and Doctor Sleep if you get to them. Enjoy the challenge!
I need to get my hands on the new Setterfield novel!
Hi Ti! I’m participating in RIP this year too.. my second year. I loved how it helped get me in the spooky Halloween spirit last year. I saw the new King book is coming in at my library this week but I already set my sights on Joyland. It will be my first King book in about 30 years, I think. I haven’t read this genre in a looong time.
Amazon says it comes out 9/22 but maybe they moved it up!
I saw it in the Wowbrary newsletter that my library sends out for what’s coming in new this week. The check out status says “in process” so maybe it’ll be on the shelves on 9/22 by the time the library puts on the jacket, stamps it and all those do-dads. I wonder if librarians sneak the book home in advance to read it? ha!
I stand corrected.. I went back and clicked through the Wowbrary newsletters I got this past week (I get more than just my own library) and now I can’t find it. Maybe I had it confused with a different book. Sorry about that.
You KNOW those librarians have read it already. Ha! I know we can get it a little earlier if I get the Kindle version but I am not sure I want it as an e-book. I do hate hardbacks though.

Yeah!! I’m participating too! In fact, I am organizing a read-along for Doctor Sleep with another fellow blogger if you are interested in joining us. I am in the middle of The Shining now and cannot wait to read the sequel to see where Danny is these days!!
When is the read along for Doc Sleep?
