This is the first summer where it has not felt like summer to me at all. Weather wise, yes…yes, it’s summer but the feeling is not there. You know that feeling. That feeling you have when it’s blazing hot outside and you are sitting inside with a tall glass of iced tea. Or that feeling you have when you are sitting outside with a good book and you can hear the sounds of kids splashing in the pool a couple of houses down.
Nope. This is a Bummer Summer.
The Boy is too busy with summer school, his ASB and cross-country activities and I am too worn out trying to keep track of everything. I mean, what kind of acid am I on? I have a wide open Sunday and what do I do? I scrub the floors. How pathetic.
We did manage to work some fun in though. Yesterday we hit another concert in the park but the band was only so-so and everyone kind of got bored. I mean, when the band plays the same song THREE times, you can’t help but grow bored. However, The Boy had some friends with him and we met up with some friends there, so The Girl was happy. Of course right in the middle of the concert the teens yelled (quite loudly) over the Zimmerman verdict. I have my opinions over the whole thing but the Huffington Post said it best, “Not Guilty. But, not innocent.” Very true.
What am I reading?
I just started Eva Moves the Furniture by Margot Livesey. I thought it was a ghost story which is why I picked it up but from the write-ups I’ve seen of it, it looks like it may be magical realism and I cannot stand magical realism. Can anyone tell me if it is?
What am I cooking?
Tonight we are grilling steaks, baking some potatoes and roasting corn. There may be ice cream too.
What am I watching?
We plan to watch Oliver! the musical later. That is the next show the kids are in and although The Boy did the show once before when he was 10, it will be The Girl’s first time doing it. They are both looking forward to it. So many great songs.
What do you have planned for today?
Well, at least, it sounds like tonight won’t be a bummer. Steaks, potatoes and corn sound good to me and spending time with the family watching a musical…what could be better than that? I, for one, think you’re blessed.
As for us, we’re chilling in the a/c. High 80s here, but feels like 90s. Mowed lawn today and finished a book earlier. Starting on another one and watching Suits (just started watching it on Netflix and really liked the first episode anyway) with The Wife.
I am blessed. I am just tired. Summer is always busy for us but this summer is just a bit more busy due to this class of his.. It’s such a heavy load. Six hours of work every day and a two tests and essays each week. And did I mention, that he is a boy?? I have to push him or it doesn’t get done. He isn’t quite at the age yet where he does it on his own.

I have not enjoyed my deck this summer either. When I do go out, it is usually on Sunday morning before 11:am:( Too humid and hot for me. Thank goodness for AC.
Today has flown by: groceries, icing the bird bath and watering the plants, cooking and a bit of reading – back to work tomorrow after 10 days off:(
Have a good week Ti
Good luck! Hope your first day back at work goes smoothly.

We sang songs from Oliver in my 5th grade choir and apparently I was a little too eager because after my concert my parents told me they could literally hear me above everyone else. That ended my singing career. 😉
Mmmm, grilled corn. Scott can’t eat it so I’ve taken the lazy route and started cooking it in the microwave. It’s not great but it’s better than frozen or canned… Hope you get at least some awesome summer before the kiddos head back to school!
You need to do something to make it feel more like summer! Run under a sprinkler…eat a Popsicle!
It doesn’t feel like summer here because of the weather. It rains all the time and when it’s not raining, it’s cloudy, so it hasn’t gotten hot yet.
Well that sounds like a bummer for sure! One of these days life will slow down a bit for you and that ice tea will be ready to go!!!
There’s still a lot left to summer to get that feeling of lazy, hazy days before it’s time for back-to-school shopping. Just avoid all advertising from now till mid-August!
My kids go back to school in 4 weeks and the back to school stuff in in full swing everywhere. Ugh! I need a long weekend by the beach. I need water for it to feel like summer.

Oh, yuck! Four weeks is not that long! Summers do go by fast, except for when I’m waiting for a heat wave to end, but I’m an empty nester now, so no more back to school stuff to deal with. Last one just graduated from college in the spring!
Our weather has not been as hot as last year, and has taken so long to feel like summer that I fear that it will seem like we never had a summer – I go back to school in less than a month.
We’re on vacation this week, so I am hoping to get a lot of books read and enjoy some hot weather out west.
I have friends on the East coast and so many haven’t really had a summer yet because of the weather. Have a wonderful vacation! My kids start school in less than a month as well. It’s gone by so quickly.

That was my summer last year. I was bummed. I hope this summer will be different. Hang in there!
Thanks! If my son could just finish this class I’d be very happy!

Bummer Summer, oh no! That doesn’t sound good. No more floor scrubbing, go soak in a lake somewhere with a fancy drink and a good book 🙂
You know what does sound good? ICE CREAM, lol. I haven’t made my summer trip to the dairy here. They have the best ice cream in the world and you’ve inspired me to take a walk there very soon 🙂
I’ve been thinking about our summer thus far and we have done summery things but this school work looming over The Boy’s head puts a damper on things. We can’t take him if he is behind with his work so I am constantly having to “get on him” to make sure he does his stuff and I am just worn out from it.
The concerts and the picnics and the BBQs all scream summer, I just wish he did not have to take this one summer class. He has to take it because he made a special group in choir and to have two periods of choir, history had to be taken in the summer. Bleh!

Boo to the bummer summer! At least you’ve had Night Film (which I’m now enjoying with you…or just behind you!)
I am so sad that I am done with Night Film. I picked up another book this weekend and put it right back down again. Just not in the mood for it. I need another great one.

WOW is it hot and humid here – I forgot how hot it can actually be. We have ‘feels like’ 100 and humid all this week.
It will be interesting to watch the post Zimmerman events. I missed the trial completely so I need to brush up on this story since it looks like it will be in the news for a while still. I agree with your huff comment though, if he did shoot him… he can’t be completely not guilty.
I wasn’t able to to read much on vacation so I have a list of books to read. Still processing this adventure but need to find a way to summarize.
Have a great week!
I know the feeling, Ti! It gets harder to experience that ‘old fashioned summer feeling’ when the kids get older, I think. I miss the days when we’d pack a cooler and go to the pool for several hours, come home and read in the hammock then plan dinner. So lovely. Not that life isn’t lovely now, too.. just different and I miss their little selves. lol
I hear ya about the bummer summer. Even out here, there doesn’t seem to be much of that summery excitement. It rains horrendously one week and then blazes like crazy the next.
Oh god I love Oliver! What fun to get to see the kids in it. I think I’m going to have to watch it again soon myself.
And the version with Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger is awesome!

The past few days have actually started to feel like summer for me since I haven’t been driving down to Westlake every day for my daughter’s dance. But, that changes again today 🙂
You need a break. Plan a long weekend to the Ocean at least once this summer. Take your books. Enjoy yourself. You deserve it!
I think every day feels the same, but I have a toddler around who drives me knuts most of the time.
That is my problem. That each day feels the same as the last so it all feels like a really long day or week. I remember the toddler years. I can’t say it gets better, but it changes. Now my days are spent shuttling them around. My son will get his learner’s permit in 6 months which will help in one sense, but terrify me in other ways.
