The Sunday Salon: Christmas Countdown

Hello! My vacation started one day earlier than planned due to a surprise campus closure so I have been off since Thursday. Sigh. Which was great because I had to spend half of the day getting a new phone. I work in IT but when it comes to your own phone, you like things a certain way and I needed to spend time on the process which I just did not feel like doing on my vacation. But, I had no choice and finally got it taken care of. I ended up with a Moto X, in case you were wondering.

Small World

It was nice to have that extra day because the very next day, we headed to Disneyland! Disneyland at Christmas is just the most magical thing ever. The lights, the sounds, the food and smells. I love it. The weather was mild and the crowds weren’t bad. We waited fifteen minutes for most rides and that’s amazing since most rides average an hour or more at this time of year. It was an amazing day, but after nearly fourteen hours, The Teen fell ill. He could not wait another second to begin the trip home so we left and he’s been down for two days now with a horrible cough.

Tonight, we are doing our annual Christmas light tour with friends but I don’t think The Teen will be able to make it. He’s still asleep but we’ll see how he is feeling. I am making cookies for the trip and then somewhere along the way we hit the coffee shop for holiday drinks. We drive around, look at the neighborhood lights and listen to holiday tunes. It’s fun. We have been doing it for over fifteen years if you can believe it.

Tomorrow we are hitting the Christmas Eve service (a day early) and then we’ll spend Christmas Eve with my in-laws. Christmas day, we have reservations for Christmas dinner. This restaurant is on an air field so you get to watch the planes take off. It’s fun. The kids love it, as do I. No cooking and no cleaning! My present to myself.

What am I reading?

Not a thing at the moment. I might just call it a year with this last book I read.

What am I cooking?

Just cookies today. I am making Snickerdoodles, gigantic Ginger cookies and Coconut Macaroons dipped in dark chocolate. The Snickerdoodle recipe is new but the other two are the BEST cookie recipes ever. They come out just like the picture and everyone always asks for them. Try them!

What am I watching?

We watched Christmas with the Kranks last night, along with the I Love Lucy Christmas Special that aired on CBS last Friday. It was a little strange and creepy to see Lucy in color. I still need to see Frosty, A Family Stone and a host of other shows/movies but I’m getting there.

What are you doing today? What do you have planned next week?

The Sunday Salon: Merry Happenings

G & E Real Life Christmas 2013

Christmas is right around the corner, isn’t it? Last night we attended a Christmas show at the church and because of last minute plans, The Teen was not able to join us so The Girl’s best friend attended with us. For those who are fairly new to the blog, The Girl is on the right.

There were Victorian carolers.

Funny faces made before the show.

The Hub was there too. He hates for his picture to be taken so getting one that is halfway decent is always a challenge.

The show was great but I did miss The Teen.

Speaking of The Teen, he just found out that he got the part of “Robert” in The Drowsy Chaperone. This is a super-fun show and quite a departure from what he’s used to. It’s a wild and crazy show that will have him singing, tap dancing and roller skating. He is over-the-top thrilled about it and there is a good chance the he will perform some piece of it at the Pantages in Hollywood.

As for this week, I am wrapping up work this Thursday and on Friday we will be at the Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland. Oh, how I love Disneyland at Christmas! After Thursday I am off until January 13th.

What am I reading?

Not much. I am now at the very  end of The Abominable and although it’s very good, the payout wasn’t what I was expecting. I’m a little disappointed with where it’s going. There are a lot of books I really need to read but I am not feeling them right now. I think the tone of the one I am reading sort of ruined me for others. Sometimes that happens and I hate when it does.

What am I cooking?

Nothing! Not in the mood today and since I have to head back to the mall (I swore I would not do it!) we will probably pick something up.

What am I watching?

I have been trying to weed through my DVR because it is overloaded with Christmas shows (Frosty, Rudolph, etc.) and I really need to make some space for some other shows. PLUS, I am way behind with my holiday movie watching. Some movies that are “must sees” for me this time of year:

  1. Christmas Vacation (saw it once but was cooking, need to see it again)
  2. White Christmas
  3. The Family Stone
  4. Christmas with the Kranks
  5. It’s a Wonderful Life (usually seen on Christmas night)
  6. Elf
  7. Home for the Holidays (Holly Hunter version)
  8. Love Actually (seen over Thanksgiving)
  9. A Christmas Story
  10. Jingle All the Way

There are some others that I sometimes don’t feel like watching and other times love. Home Alone and Deck the Halls fall into that category. I love A Miracle on 34th Street but I tend to watch that on Thanksgiving day.

Well, I am off to see what I can get done. Wish me luck today as I have to hit the mall and bookstore and I MUST finish my shopping.
