Books I Loved In 2008

Out of all the books I’ve read this year, there were two that affected me deeply. One of them is Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones, which I reviewed here.

The other, is a book that I am reading now, True Notebooks by Mark Salzman. I will be posting the review tomorrow to kick-off the new year but it’s a book that I had pre-conceived notions about, and realized very early on that I was incorrect in my thinking. It has changed my opinions on juvenile correctional facilities and has touched me in a way that is completely unexpected. I look forward to sharing it with you.

That said, have a wonderful and safe New Year’s Eve. I look forward to another great year of reading!

The Week Ahead: Winter Break 2008/09, Part II

Well it’s my second week of being off and I’m completely out of whack. Daytime routines are non-existent which is wonderful of course, but I will be hating life next week. I am going to try and savor each of the days I have left but unfortunately I have to tidy up this house first.

Why is there so much packaging involved where toys are concerned? Those horrible wire ties and the toy manufacturers even sew doll’s hair to the box now. I actually have to use wire cutters just to get to the goods. Needless to say, I have thrown out four huge loads of trash and they are still opening stuff!

As for my week, it doesn’t look bad at all:

Monday, December 29, 2008 – Pre-register for my son’s surgery. I did this online but someone at the hospital said I may have to come in. I REALLY do not want to drag two kids to the hospital to sign papers that I can sign later. As for reading, I am going to try and finish Cane River today. It’s for my book group and I am not loving it. It’s okay, but it’s slow. Has anyone read it? Does it get any better? I am half-way through it. I am also grabbing snippets of Twilight in between other stuff. Threw some spaghetti fixings in the crock pot so dinner should be seamless.

Tuesday, December 30, 2008 – Just lounging around today. Nothing going on except more reading. I may do some house stuff if I get bored. Like clean out the garage which is being consumed by Christmas storage boxes.

Wednesday, December 31, 2008 – Nothing going on during the day except the I Love Lucy marathon on TV Land but later we will be going to a friend’s house for a New Year’s Eve party. We are on the West Coast but we celebrate on East Coast time so we can get the kids to bed at a decent hour. They don’t know the difference! We watch the ball drop in Times Square and that is that. It’s a fun time. Lots of good food and conversation. I’m looking forward to it. I am also going to try and get a review in before the new year hits.

Thursday, January 1, 2009 – Happy New Year! Today we are staying home. We plan to watch the Rose Parade on TV while I cook all day. We just eat and be lazy.

Friday, January 2, 2009 – We plan to see the Rose Parade Floats today. They park them along a street in Pasadena and for a small fee, you can check out the floats up close. If the weather is too hot though, we may not go because the floats wilt pretty fast. Same goes for rain, if it rains too hard they get pelted and just fall apart.

The WeekendUPDATE: Just bought tickets to see the Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Pasadena Civic. I will be taking my friend to see this for her birthday on Sunday. Afterward, will probably try to relax before my son’s surgery and will try to straighten out my schedule for the following work week.

What do you guys have planned for New Year’s Eve?
