The Sunday Salon: The "I Am Sick Pity Party" Edition

I finally get some down time and what happens? I get sick. Not just sick, like a sniffle here and there but flat out sick (tonsils swollen, throat as red as can be). Ugh. So what do you think I am craving? A cool drink? Ice cream? No… the spiciest, hottest Carne Asada tacos known to man. I’ll burn this cold out of me yet!

Tonight we’ll heat up the grill and enjoy a little Mexican feast, watch some 80’s movies and just chill. Right now though I am on the couch reading. I am alternating between Foreign Tongue and The Middle Place and enjoying both of them. I may imbibe on a shot of NyQuil here in a little bit because the throat is quite the squeaky wheel today.

Tomorrow as we celebrate Memorial Day with our burgers and hot dogs, my 18-year-old nephew will be on a plane to Afghanistan where he’ll serve his country for twelve long months. It’s sort of ironic that he is being sent ON Memorial Day. I remember when he was just a chubby kid and now he is a sharp shooter for the Army. It blows my mind.

Hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend.

  1. Sorry to hear you’re sick while you’re on vacation. I’m sure it’s scary to send a loved one off to Afghanistan like that – I’ll pray for him.

  2. It is amazing to think of an 18-yr-old going off to do that – they are still so young! What a meaningful Memorial Day for you!

I hope your cold is better. But I know from being in Tucson that hot hot Mexican food (washed down with frozen margaritas) can cure many many things!

  3. You know that Book Club Girl will be talking to Kelly Corrigan on Blog Talk Radio on Wednesday night, right? If you miss it you could always listen to it at a later date. Just thought you might want to know.

  4. I hope you feel better soon, and that you get some good “kick back and read” time while recovering.

I’ll keep your nephew and all that he is serving with in my thoughts, particularly tomorrow.

  5. Feel better!

I just finished The Middle Place last week and it was excellent. That’s a good book to be holed up with when you’re sick. A serious topic, but very heartwarming and funny at the same time.

  6. It’s not easy to see such a young one off. Let him know we appreciate that he’s keeping us safe and that we hope he stays safe, too.

  7. So sorry to hear you are sick! I always think spicy food actually helps, too. I’ll hold a good thought for your nephew 🙂

  8. Lisa at Books on the Brain lent me Foreign Tongue. She loved it. I liked it. We both reviewed it. I’m curious to hear what you thought of it.

    I hope you feel better.

I, too, LOVE spicy food for a cold!

  9. Oh no! I am sorry to hear you’ve been sick. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Your plans for tonight sound wonderful, Ti. A Mexican feast sounds perfect. I am glad you are enjoying the books you are reading.

A friend of mine left for Iraq at the beginning of May and I think of her often. She’ll be there through October. I’ll add your nephew to my prayers.

Have a great week, Ti, and feel better soon!

  10. I hope you’re feeling better tomorrow. I’m sorry to hear about your nephew. Our nephew turns 16 in a few weeks and I can’t imagine him going to war in two years.

  11. I’m so sorry you aren’t feeling well!! I hope you get better soon. Be sure to get plenty of rest!

  12. Dang, hope you start feeling better soon. Ditto what Rhapsody said: ice cold margaritas can’t hurt either.

Best to your nephew…a courageous young man, that’s for certain.

  13. What a complete and utter bummer that you are sick on a 3 day weekend! I hope you kick this crud quickly and are able to enjoy at least part of it.

I just want to say thank you to you and your nephews parents for the sacrifice being made–(and to the nephew too!). My Austen will be 18 in a year and there is no way I can imagine sending him off to war. My prayers are with you all for his safety and your peace of mind.

    Enjoy the grilling tomorrow!

  14. I hope that the hot mexican food did the trick and your feeling better today! My hubby loves spicy, hot food and swears it helps headaches and other ailments!
Prayers for your nephew as he heads to Afghanistan today.

  15. Sorry to hear you are so sick Ti. I’ll be praying for your nephew to stay safe out there. I hope you enjoyed that Mexican feast.

  16. Reading about your nephew made me cry (don’t mind me – I think it’s hormones over-reacting). You must be proud and a little bit scared at the same time – I know I would be.

I totally agree with you about the spicy Mexican food. I can never get enough of it, so it just makes sense when I’m sick to have more. 🙂 I hope you’re feeling better soon!

  17. I know you are feeling better. So hard to see the young ones off to Afghanistan. My best friend from grade schools son is there.

Hey girl… when I am sick.. bring on the spicy….. I am telling you.. kindred souls…
