Review: In The Woods

I first saw In The Woods, by Tana French while on vacation in Denver. I was in the Tattered Cover Bookstore and it was sitting on the bestseller shelf and it immediately caught my eye. BUT, and there is always a but, I was on vacation and did not want a heavy read. So I added it to my TBR list for another day.

After reading Jill’s review, I decided I had to read it and she was nice enough to send it to me! Thank you Jill! In case you were wondering, Jill did not like the book but her comments intrigued me enough to want to read it for myself.

There are two stories here. One centers around the murder of a 12 year old girl, the other centers around an earlier incident where three children went missing, with only one child being found. The child that was found, Adam Ryan who now goes by Robert Ryan, goes on to become a murder detective and has been assigned to the case of the 12 year old girl.Rob Ryan and his partner Cassie Maddox work the case and come to the conclusion that the two cases may be related.

As the case unfolds we learn more about the two friends that never returned and the bond that Adam(Rob) had with them. As you can imagine, any possible relationship between the two cases would naturally force Rob off of his current case, so he and his partner keep it from their superior. This is easy to do for awhile since no one on the force knows of his involvement with the first case except for his partner, Cassie.

I was touched by this book. French does an excellent job of describing what it’s like to be kid. Poor Rob(Adam), besides knowing that there could be a connection between the two cases, really cannot remember anything about what happened to him or his friends. This is something he lives with daily. He holds the key to the mystery yet he is not capable of providing the answers.

Cassie understands this and knows how to be around him…when to step in, when to take a step back. Their relationship can be compared to that of a married couple. Innocent bickering, completing one another’s sentences, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed them and found their friendship to be charming. When a third detective by the name of Sam is added to the investigation, he steps right into the investigation without batting an eye. I don’t know if French intended it but the threesome reminded me very much of the Adam and his two friends that disappeared. I was touched by this.

I won’t go into how the book ended for obvious reasons but if you enjoy a character driven plot and don’t mind a lot of descriptive details, you will enjoy In The Woods as much as I did. I think anyone reading it can relate to summers of years past where friends were everything to you and all you had to do was play and have a good time.

Tana French has a follow up to this book titled The Likeness. It features some of the characters from In The Woods. My copy of In The Woods had the first chapter of The Likeness in it and I have to say, it held my attention. The Week Ahead: November 10-16, 2008

The weather this past weekend went from warm to cold very quickly. Today, it’s a little nippy out but I can tell it will warm up by lunch time. Mother Nature has not made up her mind as to which direction to take as far as November weather. I just hope it’s not 98 degrees when I am roasting a turkey. It’s happened before.

Here’s what’s going on in my world this week:

Monday, November 10, 2008 – No meetings today at work but I have yoga at noon. Can I let you in on a secret? I am beginning to not like yoga so much. Lately, the instructor has been a real pill. She always says “listen to your body” so I do, but then she comes over and pushes me a bit more and things crack and pop and then I am messed up for the entire week. Hello lady! I am listening to my body but you are not! Tonight my son has rehearsal so I will be reading, in the car with my blanket and flashlight until he is done. I am starting Dewey tonight so I am looking forward to it.

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 – It’s Veteran’s Day. The university I work for never gets it off but this year the campus is closed. My kids are also out of school and there’s no daycare so we will be having lunch and seeing High School Musical 3. I’ve managed to escape all of the High School Musicals up until this point but my 10 year-old son is pretty excited about seeing it although he is playing Mr. Coolness and won’t admit it. My daughter is excited too. It will be a fun outing. In the evening, I have a hair appointment so that will be some “me” time. Sometime today, I will post my review of In The Woods.

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 – Today is the Harvest Breakfast here at work. This is when upper management cooks for us. It’s entertaining, but forced socialization is a bit “high school” for me. I have a couple of business meetings today and my co-worker and I have a presentation to make later this afternoon so I will miss yoga. I’m doing the happy dance so disappointed. Not sure about rehearsal tonight. Still waiting for confirmation but I am hoping there is one, so I can use to the time to knock off another book on my list.

Thursday, November 13, 2008 – Today is the big Southern California Shake Out. This is a state-wide earthquake drill. The first of its kind as far as I know. In anticipation of the “Big One” which involves the San Andreas fault, everyone is to duck and cover at 10am. Since we are a state-run university this is a huge deal. Not sure how long it will take but I will be under my desk come 10am.

Friday, November 14, 2008 – Nothing going on today. Yay! Might ask the husband to take us out to dinner if he and Kidlet #1 do not go to the high school football game. May post a giveaway today.

The Weekend – On Saturday, my husband and I go to the dentist. I know it sounds completely lame to go to the dentist on Saturday but we make a day of it. Grandma watches the kids and then after our cleanings, husband and I have a nice lunch and do some browsing if time permits. It’s like a mini-date. We don’t have anything going on on Sunday but we may visit the cemetery to pay our respects to some loved ones. It’s a bit of a drive to get there but coming back we stop at one of my favorite book stores. The kids look forward to it as well.

Anything special planned for this week?
