The Sunday Salon: Birthday Weekend

Sunday Salon

We celebrated The Hub’s birthday this weekend so that meant a movie and dinner out! We hardly ever go to the movies, anymore. Mainly because the cost of taking a family these days is just ridiculous, but mostly because I cannot stand it when everyone takes their phones out, starts talking or is just plain irritating. So when we go, we go to one of those “reserve your seat” theaters  It’s worth it to me to spend a few extra dollars to get the experience we want.

We went to see this:

Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 was loads of fun despite its slow start and having a villain that was just barely a villain (in my opinion). But if you are familiar with the movies at all, you know how charming Robert Downey Jr. can be, and he was. Very funny too. In the hands of director Shane Black, a little bit darker than what we’ve seen so far but we enjoyed it. And not one person took out their phone! It was a perfect viewing experience.

Afterward, we hit a restaurant for steaks. You’d think with all that popcorn and snacking that we’d want something lighter but no, everyone wanted steaks so that’s what we had. It was a good day.

Today, The Girl is going to a BBQ, The Boy will be working on school stuff and I, (unfortunately) probably have to hit the market. Ugh. I really do not like the market and to add insult to injury, I am out of coffee! What? No coffee on a Sunday morning. It’s tragic.

I am in a little reading funk right now. After reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle for #winditup2013, I don’t feel like reading anything else. I need a few days to digest it.

Tomorrow, tickets go on sale for Beauty and the Beast! It’s getting close and with it, begins our busy summer. What do you have planned for today?

  1. Sounds like a fun weekend. Iron Man is a perfect birthday movie! There are reserve your seat theaters? I’ve never heard of such a thing but I am intrigued. I have also had it up to here with texting and talking on the phone during movies. The noise is bad enough but I wish people would know how far that little light on the phone carries. Have a great week!

    1. I am in So Cal and there are many chains that do the reserve seat thing but the one we frequent is ArcLightand another one we may try next time is MuvieCo. And a really snuggly romantic one is iPic. You can sit in alove seatand order food and drinks! It’s so worth the extra couple of bucks to just walk in right before a big movie and not have to deal with waiting in line.

  2. It’s been so long since I’ve seen a movie in the theatres – I can’t remember too many people fiddling with their phones, which tells you how long ago it was! I like your choice of restaurant – steak is always one of my favourite picks. Happy birthday to your husband!

    1. Our experience was good but in the regular theaters, there is nothing but phonenonsensegoing on and these darn phones are so bright when lit up, they are hard to ignore. I seriously wonder why people go to the movies if all they are going to do is play with their phones. And it’s not even the teens. It’s the adults.

  3. Happy birthday to your husband! I’ve never heard of a reserve your seat theater but it sounds like a great idea. I generally go during the day when the theater is mostly empty.

    1. Out here, you can reserve your seat and show up right before the movie begins AND they’ll bring you food!

  4. I just saw today that the new Star Trek movie comes out May 17th so we can go for my husband’s May 13th birthday. I usually avoid movie theaters on Friday and Saturday nights due to noisy audiences, but I guess I can make an exception for the husband’s birthday too! (Hmm. What to read after Wind-Up Bird. I haven’t read to the end yet, but I’ve just started Life After Life by Kate Atkinson which seems a little surreal at the beginning.)

    1. I just want to think about Wind-Up this week but I have three reviews that I have to get out of my head, and onto the blog so I will be attempting to do that this morning. I wanted to read the Life After Life book but I got turned down for an ARC so I will have to buy it!

  5. Now that sounds like the perfect birthday and family time…we are still thinking about our day…I am craving a pineapple margarita!

    1. Can’t say I’ve ever had a pineapple margarita, but another blogger told me about Seagram’s Sweet Tea Vodka. Um….yes please.

  6. I wish I could say I was going to see Iron Man 3 today, but alas, I have to mow the lawn today. Already have half done…now need to do other half. A nap, though, might be in order first. Looking forward to The Great Gatsby and new Star Trek movie.

  7. Ha! I didn’t even realize that Iron Man was out. Our anniversary is coming up soon and so I was thinking we might see a movie but I had my eye on Great Gatsby.

Today I am actually sitting down to catch up with some blogs. It’s been a few weeks and I’ve missed it (but have also been a bit stressed by it as well). Oh and if the babe takes a nice nap then I’m hoping for a few pages of Wind-up Bird as well.

    Enjoy Beauty and the Beast!

    1. The movie was a real treat. I REALLY want to see Gatsby too! We’ll see if it happens. I don’t see many movies in a theater. Maybe 2 a year?? I am in a total funk over Wind-up. Not in a bad way. I just don’t want to think about any other books at the moment, which makes the three reviews I need to writeespeciallychallenging. I don’t feel as if I can read any other books though until I get them written so I plan to do that this morning.

  8. The husband has been talking about Iron Man a lot so we’ll be hitting the theater soon as well. I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it. It’s been a busy weekend here with gardening (ouch, those joints!) and our dog’s birthday.

    1. I seriously cannot garden but I am envious of those who can. Our big excitement this weekend was the darn gopher that tore up our yard and then how the hub brought him to me once caught, like a cat boasting of his kill. UGH!!!!! The Girl was fascinated. I, was not.

  9. Happy Birthday Hubby! And I had high hopes to see Iron Man today but it is 4:00 already (WAY too much time at the mall) and I’m not sure if I’ll get anyone back out of the house at this point. And it is hard to bounce back from something like Wind Up Bird. Everything else kinda feels dead after that.

    1. What were you doing at the mall for so long? I can’t stand the mall these days. They are so big and loud with too much stimulus. LOL.

  10. Sounds like you had a nice weekend, with the exception of No Coffee! That is just wrong!!

I often get in a post-book funk and it takes me a while to settle on something new. Hope you find something great to read soon.

    1. My husband took pity on me and picked up coffee but it was quite possibly the WORST cup ever! More like tea. Anyway, I am better now 😉

  11. Happy Birthday to your hub! Sounds like you had a great time, and hopefully you have stocked up on coffee! It’s a definite necessity!!

  12. So you’re one of those families that made Iron Man 3 hit records over the weekend! 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed it and the steaks. We haven’t been to movies in ages, but with a toddler…what movies could we see really. 🙂 I know how that is after finishing a book and wanting a few days to digest…I’m in that mode now after all the poetry last month — hard to switch back to reading fiction.

    1. With both kids, I had to wait until they were about four to take them to a movie and it had to be a funny one in order to hold their interest. I remember trying to take my son to Spiderman at the age of two and 4 minutes in, when the spider bite took place, he got up and bolted from the theater. Yeah, a little too early for him and us.

  13. Sounds like you had a nice weekend. Believe it or not I have not seen any of the Iron Man movies. I really should though.

No coffee in the house. Oh my, nobody would come near me! Lol. Hope you have a great week.

  14. I can’t wait to see Iron Man 3. I’m a huge Robert Downey Jr. fan so he is the main draw. (It certainly isn’t Gwyneth! Blech!)
