Why I Feel Like Ms. Lucky Pants Lately

You know that feeling you get when a new, highly anticipated book comes out and that brand new copy ends up in YOUR hands? That is the best feeling. But when you get that copy before it even comes out? Bliss. I’ve been Ms. Lucky pants in that department lately!

Here are just a few that I am really excited about:

Galleys of Upcoming Books

Big Brother by Lionel Shriver (June 4, 2013)

For Pandora, cooking is a form of love. Alas, her husband, Fletcher, a self-employed high-end cabinetmaker, now spurns the “toxic” dishes that he’d savored through their courtship, and spends hours each day to manic cycling. Then, when Pandora picks up her older brother Edison at the airport, she doesn’t recognize him. In the years since they’ve seen one another, the once slim, hip New York jazz pianist has gained hundreds of pounds. What happened? After Edison has more than overstayed his welcome, Fletcher delivers his wife an ultimatum: It’s him or me. (Goodreads)

The Illusion of Separateness by Simon Van Booy (June 25, 2013)

Award-winning author Simon Van Booy tells a harrowing and enchanting story of how one man’s act of mercy during World War II changed the lives of a group of strangers, and how they each eventually discover the astonishing truth of their connection. (Goodreads)

We Are Water by Wally Lamb (October 29, 2013)

We Are Water is an intricate and layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection, told in the alternating voices of the Ohs-nonconformist Annie; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest Oh. Set in New England and New York during the first years of the Obama presidency, it is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art. (Edelweiss)

What would make this list even better, would be the inclusion of Stephen King’s two books (Joyland and Dr. Sleep) and The Abominable by Dan Simmons. I keep looking out for ARCs but I suspect the King books are impossible to get and I haven’t seen a galley offered of The Abominable as of yet. I keep looking though!

What upcoming books are you excited about?

  1. Nice, happy for you. 🙂
I don’t get excited about upcoming books because I tend to get guilty and stressed out about all the books I had been excited for in the past that are still sitting around my house unread.

    1. You describe what happens in my house to a T. I bought the Irving book in hardback! Unheard of and it’s still unread. I didn’t mention the 27 galleys I have before these that need to be read but I haven’t bought anything in over a year. I do get bogged down a bit by life but I still get excited about the books. They aren’t always read way before the release date though.

  2. Woohoo! I hope you enjoy each of them. I am on an upcoming tour for Simon Van Booy’s book. It’ll be my first by him. And I’m listening to a Wally Lamb book right now–albeit an older one. 🙂

  3. Ti, that is awesome! I am so jealous, especially of the Lamb book 🙂 I can’t wait to get my hands on all three and I definitely can’t wait to find out what you think of them all. Looks like good reads are on the horizon for ya! Enjoy!!

  4. Oh man! What I wouldn’t give to review that Shriver book! I have read almost all of her others, and I can’t wait until this one comes out. She is so amazing and I love her work. You are a very lucky girl indeed!!

    1. This may sound odd, but I really can’t say that I love her work, but I do appreciate it and her books always, always make me think.

  5. I know what you mean! There’s nothing better than getting a book you really want to read, well before it’s even out. Hope you enjoy these three books!

  6. I do love Shriver, but she can be a bit soap-boxy so I hope this isn’t one of them. All three of these books made my heart skip a beat or two.

  7. Yay! I’m so happy for you, Ti! Your whole day just lit up I imagine! It is a wonderful feeling and reminds me of the feeling I always got in the early hours of Christmas morning before I was allowed to go downstairs and see what santa left under the tree and in my stocking. As I write this I can feel a bit of that excitement twittering through my body now…just enough to remind me!

Enjoy! I look forward to your reviews! And the books I will rea dsomeday sort of soon! I’ve been wondering when Lamb would write another book.
    Happy Reading!

  8. I had no idea Wally Lamb is having a new book out this fall!!! He’s one of my favorite authors and will have to get a copy of this one. You are a lucky girl!!!

  9. Brand spanking new books, I’ll bet they smell good! Have fun reading them. Today a student returned a book that he said he had lost and I was so happy that I immediately checked it out to me and brought it home!

  10. You are Miss Lucky Pants! I’m curious to see what you think of the Shriver book. After her last one, I’m not rushing out to get it. And I’ll have to try and get the Lamb one — he doesn’t write a lot of books so it is always special when one comes out.

  11. wow I didnt realize a Shriver book was coming out — perhaps another slightly controversial one judging by the synopsis … about a fat brother vs. a slim husband but maybe not. You’ll have to tell us early!

  12. LOL Ms lucky pants! I felt like that last weekend when a publisher Brown offered 5 Kindle books to stream at one go! You just think what have I done to deserve this? and then it followed by more pressure to read them in my limited time…. 😦 Shortlived Euphoria I would say!)

    1. I don’t accept too many review books, really, but I was looking at my list the other day and realized that I am a month behind on many of them. THAT, did put a crimp in my good feeling.
