This past week has been a busy one. On Friday, my son graduated (they call it promotion out here) from 6th grade. There was a ceremony to prepare for, so I took a few days off of work to just focus on that. It was a good move considering my “sick-in-bed” post last week.I needed a few extra days to regroup and prioritize.
Today, I am in a much better place but not until after a few emotional outbursts from the graduate. It seems that he considers himself a “man” now and his attitude took a nosedive which put a damper on all of the festivities. Frankly, all of it turned me into a blubbering idiot and I swore I would never be that but you know what? There’s a first time for everything.

I love the kid, but he sure can be a little…difficult.

Now that promotion is behind us and school is out, I can think “summer” and you know what that means? Summer camp, swimming, vacay and READING. Yeah, I still have to work but the pace is so much slower during the summer session that it’s actually kind of nice. A good time to catch-up on all of those projects that are half-done.
Right now I am reading The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. It’s good, but a tad slow for me. I’m hoping it picks up soon because I keep catching myself skimming. I’m still working on my summer reading list but it’s coming together. I think I’m done with it but I keep moving things around. I will probably post it within the next couple of days.
I’m also thinking of my next read-along venture. In July, Lisa from Lit & Life is thinking about doing a read-along for The Space Between Us, which I will definitely be a part of. I really enjoyed The Weight of Heaven so I can’t wait to read another book by Umrigar.
In August, I am thinking about doing a read-along for Orwell’s 1984. Any interest?
As for today, I plan to just relax and let the day unfold. What do you have planned?
BTW…the title of this post is a nod to everything Toy Story because it is EVERYWHERE! Three aisles of toys at Target. I can hear the $Cha-Ching$ from here.
Looking forward to your summer reading list. I’m reading”The Calligrapher’s Daughter” by Eugenia Kim. It is lovely,,I am really enjoying this book. Her style of writing is beautiful, almost poetic. Sometimes I almost hate to turn the page to leave the one just read.
Mary
Congrats to the “man” and his promotion 🙂
Ti, you are in for a treat with The Space Between Us. I LOVED that book, as well as The Weight of Heaven, and If Today Be Sweet by Umrigar. enjoy
have a great week
Does that mean your son is moving up to middle school? Oh, the middle school years are the worst, but you’ve got something to look forward to – they settle down once they hit high school.
Trish and I will be starting The Brothers Karamazov in July, so that’s my summer read-along.
Stop laughing.
You know I’ll be in for 1984 – always up for a dystopia!
Congratulations on the “promotion!”
I’ve been involved in Bloggiesta stuff, but I’ve also been hanging out with my youngest grandson, who’ll be back today.
It looks like a HOT day outside, so we’ll probably head to the mall!
Here’s my salon: http://laurel-rainsnowsaccidentallife.blogspot.com/2010/06/sunday-salon-june-13.html
I am excited for the slow pace of summer too–hopefully I get a lot of reading done too!
Well your son looks very handsome and you know we all have to assert our independence at some point with our parents…it’s inevitable! 🙂
Summer reading is one of the best simple pleasures in life huh?!
Congrats on your son’s promotion! Doesn’t time fly? Middle school for our Sam has not been too bad–but there have been moments! One of our biggest struggles has been his lack of organization on every level of his life–especially related to his homework!
School is out for my youngest next week and I have been mulling around some ideas for him for summer reading, but haven’t really figured out my own. I might like to read along with The Space Between Us-it sounds really good. Regarding 1984? I will pass–I was force fed that book in high school and I just don’t have any desire to repeat that reading experience! 😉
Today, I am reading Eternal on the Water and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Wildly different from each other…..
*smiles*
I’m still in denial about those teen years. I’m looking forward to some of it – like the boys being able to be more independent, but dreading the rebellion and attitude. I wish you the best of luck with it.
I always think I’m going to have more time to read in the summer, but it doesn’t ever work that way. My kids keep me busy, especially my youngest, who wants me to read to him constantly to keep up with his brother in the summer reading program. It’s great that he wants to read/be read to so much, but it does cut into my reading time. 🙂
I’m in for “1984” in August; it will work great for several of the challenges I signed up for so that will be great.
Ahh–your son. A friend once told me that boys are absolutely the worst to parent from about 12-15 and I found that to be so true! Sure they can do the stupidest things in high school and push your buttons but they are so much less sassy and aggressive!
Congrats to your “man.” : )
And we are anxiously awaiting the Toy Story 3 movie … but I’m trying my hardest to avoid the merchandise … not an easy task!
Ti, I have to say I’m so glad to know that you skim too. I try so hard not to but when a book is moving slow it’s SO tempting!
I might be in for 1984 in August. I’ve never read it!
The Space Between Us is an awesome book. It’s my favorite by Thrity so far.
Congratulations to your son! It sounds like he’s already developing the attitude of a middle schooler. For better or worse. LOL
Enjoy your summer, Ti. And have a great week!
Congratulations to your son, and you!
I’m not sure if I can read 1984 with you – Kristi from Peatswea and I are finishing Anna Karenina and will be starting The Portrait of a Lady late August. Let us know if you want to read with us and read 1984 later (or both).
Can’t wait to start The Space between Us.
Congrats to you and your son – WOW! He sounds like my cousin – as soon as she started middle school, the attitude began. Yikes! LOL!
By the by, I wanted to say thanks for my copy of Let The Great World Spin – I just received it in the post! Cheers!
Have a great week!
Thanks for letting me know about the book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Hi Ti–Congratulations to your son. How awesome! I know you can’t wait to relax and enjoy the summer. Me too! Glad you are feeling somewhat better.
Wow, he’s a man after 6th grade…how times have changed! Congrats to him.
I’m going to be starting Raven Stole the Moon and read some more Sookie for the challenge.
Have a great week.
