Okay, so I’m Reading Animal Farm Again

Animal Farm book cover.

I was all tucked in, on a rainy night and didn’t want to go downstairs to get my Kindle so I pulled up this classic on Hoopla.

Why?

Oh, because a revolution is on my mind. The overthrowing of government, characters rising up to be dictators, you know, it’s all here. It certainly makes for interesting late night reading. Oppression at its finest. Man, we know nothing about that.

I hope you detect my sarcasm. Just like 1984, what we are experiencing now has all been laid out before. The fact that history repeats itself is nothing new, and yet we all struggle with it.

We will get through this. I have faith. Review to come.

  1. This is a good one! I read it many times with my students when we studied the Russian Revolution. Now also seems like a good time to read it.

  2. I can barely look at the (online) news these days, so I know I can’t read this book right now. These are very scary days… I hope you’re right and that we’ll get through this. I’m not so sure.

    1. I just wish that those in a position to do something did something earlier. All of our data is in the hands of these people now and even with the order to destroy the data, it’s not going to happen. Redirecting funds to crypto and billionaires pockets is where this is all going.

  3. Yeah my head’s on fire right now … I can barely read the headlines. I remember Animal Farm long ago — revolution!

  4. The first time I read Animal Farm, I was clearly too young for it. I had no idea that it was an allegory. I might pick this up again. I think I still have a copy on the shelf.

    1. It’s also classified as satire. I got the satire part when I read it years ago in school but reading it today really hits me differently.

  5. There’s something calming, to me, about seeing that this is what happens, over and over, even during prosperous times (and times have never been as amazingly prosperous as they are now) and even among good people with good intentions. It’s inevitable. There’s no stopping it. One day people will look back and say, I didn’t know, and, Why did we let this happen? and we’ll move through it, those who are left, and try again.
