Reading Funk

I am in a bit of a reading funk. I know many of you have been feeling the same way. I am supposed to be reading Case Histories for book club and I am, but in short spurts. I don’t know why but I cannot sit and read it for longer than just a few minutes. It immediately pulled me in, and now it seems too easy to put down. I need to finish it though since we’ll be discussing it soon.

Instead, I find myself wanting to read Life As We Knew It. I had not planned on reading this but the University Library happened to have a copy, so it is sitting patiently beside me as I type this.

If you are in a funk like me, what are you reading right now, and what would you rather be reading?

  1. Many people are having this issue either a blogging funk or reading funk. I think it’s a combination of Old Man Winter and the after holidays let down. I was reading a book I wasn’t enjoying so I moved on to one I knew I would enjoy. Try a book you have been wanting to read. It might help. Hang in there!

  2. Me too! I actually didn’t read one word yesterday. I think we’re just coming off of the “disciplined life” of GameOn and need a few days of readjustment; then we’ll be back to normal, whatever that is!

  3. It’s already the 27th? Oh, crap, I’m still reading the same book I started at the beginning of the month/year. That’s sad. I don’t know what it is either about the reading funk that seems to be spreading…I guess maybe it is a combination of Old Man Winter and the after holidays let down as Beth mentioned. At least, I hope that’s what it is…I don’t know if I can take much more of this funk. I’d like to say I’m off to read, but have some miles to go before I read.

  4. Those reading funks can really be annoying. I recently came out of one myself. For me it usually happens at the end of the year. I’m not in a funk now, but there is a book I’m anxious to read but I have others ahead of it. It is THE GOOD THIEF by Hannah Tinti. I’ve just finished THE HOUSE ON TRADD STREET by Karen White that I’d been wanting to read and now I’m reading JANEOLOGY by Karen Harrington. It has sucked me in pretty good. I have a few ARCs to read after that before I can read THE GOOD THIEF. I hope your funk goes away quickly and you can get back on track.

  5. I’m having a bit of a problem myself. I didn’t have as many books this month that I had to review so I determined to get to some of the books that I need to review that didn’t have specific dates to be done by. They’re not bad books, but I think it’s the idea that I “have” to read them rather than me being able to just pick up whatever piques my interest.

  6. I’m reading two books right now…Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters. These are the two books I’m actively reading, but there are others on my nightstand that are being neglected. I really need to finish both of these this week or next…UGh

  7. I have a lot on my reading plate right now, so much so that I can;t afford to be in a funk. I am reading and really enjoying A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty White. I hope that you are able to bounce back soon. As a lover of books I know that reading finks are no fun!

    1. It’s so frustrating because I AM reading, but I’m not getting that warm, fuzzy “I gotta read this” feeling. I want something that is unputdownable.

  8. I have this problem a lot. I start a book and am enjoying it, and then another book calls my name and I start that one as well. I’d prefer to concentrate on just one book at a time, but it does not always work that way. Just go with the flow Ti.

  9. I’ve been a reading funk this week too and decided to browse through my books and grab a few that were just fun reads. Then I saw a nonfiction book at the library (The Genesis Enigma) picked it up and am reading happily through it. You probably won’t see a review up on my site though, because I don’t really review anything that I’m reading that has to do with religion or doctrine. I consider those just for me reads. 🙂

I hope you are able to get through your reading funk easily, and enjoy the book that you found at the library!

  10. Life As We Knew It is the perfect thing to get you out of your funk. It is a quick, nail-biting read. Case Histories is great, but it all doesn’t come together until later in the book. Stick with it, and I think you’ll be rewarded.

  11. I have been in a reading funk much of the month. I’ve been reading (and finally finished this morning) Scottsboro by Ellen Goodman, which I loved. It’s a book that is hard to read at times because it’s depressing (and based on a true story). Because I did really like it (and loved her writing), I felt guilty when I picked up something else. I’ve seen a lot of movies this month while I haven’t been reading much!

    1. I haven’t been watching any movies either. I am almost in sensory overload or something and just need to draw the drapes and call it a day. LOL.

  12. While not exactly in a reading funk, I think that I may have over-committed myself a little which often leads to a funk. Hoping to avoid it. But if I were you right now, I would put the obligation aside and read what called to me. Or draw the drapes and call it a day. 🙂

  13. I’ve been in reading funks as well and sometimes it is when I have to read certain books or there is a lot of stress in my personal life and I can’t focus. Maybe, you just need to read what you want to for awhile. I’m reading Hunger Games and really like it but I haven’t had the time to sink into it.

  14. I was in a reading funk recently too and stopped reading novels of any kind. I switched to nonfic, mostly memoirs and some self-help-type books. It seemed to help. Since then I’ve been reading mysteries and after two that didn’t really work for me, I finally read one that kept me up half the night. Now that I’ve finished it, though, I’m not sure what to read next! I agree with others: reading what you want (instead of what you feel you must read) will probably help and/or reading a different genre might be the way to go. Anyway, I hope you get out of your funk soon!

  15. I hear you!!!!
I was reading Book of Fires. It is good, parts great, then good…I find my mind wandering to everything else but the story. I do want to read it, because I am curious about the story, but I can’t seem to read more than a few pages at a time.
I am reading Island of the Swans by CIJI Ware and I love this one!

  16. I feel like I’ve been in a funk too, although I got a ton of reading done in January. My parents gave me a subscription to Netflix for Christmas, so I’ve been watching a TON of television and movies lately. The novelty should wear off soon, I hope and I can get back to reading.

  17. I hate reading funks. They usually result when I’m forced to read something I don’t really like or feel obligated to read. That is one reason I’ve tried to cut down on ARCs and select my books carefully.

  18. I wonder if the funk is a post holiday funk, I have one to. I can’t seem to stay focused, I pick up a book, read 20 pages and decide I’m not interested.

It might also be due to having read all of my ‘commitments’ for the near future.

I’m going to read something light this weekend. Good luck to you!
