The Sunday Salon: What a week!

This past week was strange in all sorts of ways. The weather was so bizarre. Tornadoes, flooding and mudslides. This is Southern California! I think we got over 19 inches of rain total, although the actual figure varies quite a bit depending on where you are (foothills or the coast). Work is still in a state of change. Everyone is waiting for “the word” as far as budget cuts and layoffs. Although I believe that I have enough seniority (over 15 years) to be somewhat safe, changes will be made and hopefully they won’t impact my office too much.

This week hasn’t been too much of a reading week. I started my book club’s pick for next month, Case Histories. It’s very interesting. It pulls you in but I am only halfway through it and wondering if there will be anything to discuss. Sometimes a book is good for reading, but not good for discussion. I am thinking that may be the case here.

My book club also met to select our books for 2010. If you care to see the list, click here. I am very excited about this list. There’s been one change since my post though. The Shadow of the Wind was swapped out with The Book Thief. I’m not sure why.

Right now I have a pot of chili cooking on the stove. The sun is shining, The Hub came home early from work and all of the homework is done. On top of my massive pile of laundry I do plan to get a little reading in. Probably a little more of Case Histories and then I will start The Weight of Heaven for a book tour that I have in February.

Hope you all have a lovely Sunday!

  1. I remember liking Case Histories very much, but I can’t remember much about it at all! Pretty sad, I guess! I read it before I started writing reviews, which have *really* helped me remember, or at least do so when I look back and read the review. To me, that is one of the biggest benefits of blogging: not to “lose” all that I have read!

  2. That is a huge shame that they pulled Shadow of the Wind. What a great book. I’ve heard good things about The Book Thief though.

I hope the rain is done! That is just an insane amount of rain!

  3. I can’t imagine19 inches of rain!

Your book club has a great list of books. First They Killed My Father is a powerful book. I read it years ago and it has stuck with me.

Have a good rest of the weekend.

  4. 19 inches of rain! Here its been boiling hot, 43C (109F??) and ive been inside in the air con as much as possible.

That is the second time in about 48 hours that someone has mentioned the Book Thief, I think I will have to add it to my wish list.

  5. 19″ of rain? That’s incredible! We had so many soups when the temps here were below 0 degrees that we haven’t made any in a couple of weeks but chili does sound good again. I may just have to get some started for tomorrow when it will be colder out again.

  6. stay safe and don’t float away! as for your reading list…it’s quite cerebral! where are the beachy reads? lol. enjoy them all–i have yet to read any on your list, though i am going to finish the book thief in 2010–it’s my only resolution.

    1. I like that…cerebral. I’m surprised we picked so many hefty books. We never pick women’s lit really but this list is an oddity for us.
