The Sunday Salon: The Leaves are Falling

Sunday Salon

I woke up this morning to a beautiful day. It’s sunny, the sky is blue but it’s cold and windy for California. This wind has taken care of the few leaves left on the trees and it’s finally beginning to feel like fall around here. Nothing’s worse than cooking a turkey in 100 degree weather and let me tell you, it has happened many, many times. Hopefully the cooler weather will stick.

I am in a pretty good mood today. I got my car back from the body shop! I am so glad to be back in my own car. I am also looking forward to Moby Dick Monday which starts tomorrow! This is where a handful of bloggers read four pages of Moby Dick each day and will post about it each Monday. Another blogger suggested that we divide it up by chapters but that would be entirely too organized for me so we’ll stick with the four pages. Of course, you can read more than that per day but four pages seems doable. Let me know if you want to join us. I am also excited over my guest post with Booking Mama this Thursday where I talk about my book club.

Right now I am overwhelmed with homework. Trying to help the kids get a handle on it and then depending on how that goes, we may hit the mall or the bookstore. I’m sure you can guess which one I’d prefer.

As for books and reading, I am currently reading Her Fearful Symmetry and I am enjoying it so far.

Oh! And look what a kind blogger (Jill over at Rhapsody in Books) sent! She sent my son Nerds by Michael Buckley and she sent my daughter a copy of Angels by Chuck Fischer. The agreement is that my son would read the book and then post a review. However, after reading 50 pages he decided that this book is a bit juvenile for him so I am going to pass this one on to Dawn for her son. I will be popping it into the mail sometime this week. Thanks Jill! As you can see from the photo above you made my daughter’s day!

I have nothing special planned for our Sunday meal today. I was at the market getting stuff for our Thanksgiving meal and neglected to buy any food for the week. How did I manage to do that?

What do you have planned for today?

  1. Hah! I can see your son has never been a nerd! I, having been, and still being, a nerd, enjoyed the book Nerds very much!

I think you’re smart to get the Thanksgiving stuff now. Last year I stopped in for something at the store the day before and was totally amazed to see the wiped out inventory!

  2. I was reading your post and had to look out the window to see if it is windy here too. Not yet. I can tell its coming though. Yesterday evening when I went to pet Anya, the sparks from the static were flying. I get such bad static with the winds. That and dry skin. I’m not a fan, as you can probably tell.

I am looking forward to reading Her Fearful Symmetry and am glad you are enjoying it. It’s gotten mixed reviews from bloggers so far from what I can tell.

My plans today include finishing up the laundry I didn’t get done yesterday and catching up on some reading.

I hope you have a great week, Ti!

  3. It’s very windy up here. And time to turn the heater on in the morning. Yay!

I started Moby Dick the other night. Yawn. But Jill says the audio is much better. I might have to join her.

  4. Glad to hear you are loving Symmetry. It seems to get its share of bad press, which makes me sad! I really liked it. That was so sweet of Jill to send you those books!

My husband is out of town, so I don’t have to “cook” per se. Kids will eat anything. I do have to wash my car, out in the stinky dead raccoon air (see my TSS). All I really want to do is curl up somewhere and read. This weekend has left me exhausted!

  5. i had my sister, aunt, and nephew staying with me for the weekend! my husband and i aren’t used to having a kiddo in the casa–and my nephew is a whirlwind at age 2 1/2!

my hubby did some laundry while i went shopping with my family…now i’m doing a bit of blogging and then off to start reading my very first graphic novel–fun home! 🙂

thanks for reminding me that thanksgiving is so close–i lost track of time!!!

  6. Today we re-arranged the living room furniture, did some housecleaning, and started on Christmas shopping. Yes, it’s time. But we did buy some books for the holidays (and I got a couple for myself, too!) :-).

I think we’ve decided on the Thanksgiving menu. I just need to put everything on next week’s shopping list. Yikes, it’s less than two weeks away!

I’ll be glad to experience Moby Dick vicariously through y’all – I’m OK with never having read it, to be honest.

  7. It’s really fallish here. Usually by now we already have snow so I’m feeling pretty lucky there. Glad you got your car back. You’ve got me thinking about trying to read Moby Dick now. lol.

  8. How nice that you have your car back now! I haven’t done any shopping for Thanksgiving food, mostly because we’re going to be visiting relatives, so I don’t have to cook. 🙂

I did have an interesting experience with dinner last night though. We used a different fajita spice packet last night and it was just awful. It was kind of sad because we’d been looking forward to the meal all week. My husband felt the worst of all because he was the one that got the wrong brand of spice mix. Fortunately it was easy to just toss the fajita mix and make bean and cheese soft tacos with the rest of the ingredients.

Oh, and weather-wise we’ve got lots of cool windy weather here. I hope it stays nice and cool for Thanksgiving for you.
