BBAW Reading Meme: For The Love of Reading

As part of the celebration, book bloggers everywhere are being asked to participate in this reading meme. In an attempt to keep this short, I selected a few of the questions to answer.

Do you tend to mark your books while you read? Or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?

I cannot deal with scribbles in a book. When I see it, I get a little bit weird.

Are you a person who tends to read to the end of a chapter or are you able to put the book down at any point?

I read until the end, unless the said book is Netherland where there are no chapters. Took me awhile to figure that out.

What are you currently reading?

I am reading The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl for an upcoming TLC book tour. I am liking it a lot more than Drood. I am also reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

What is the last book you bought?

I just bought a copy of Northanger Abbey at the university’s used book sale.

Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time, or can you read more than one at a time?

I really strive to read one book at a time but it never works out for me. My moods change and when they do, I need to move on to another book so I often have 3-4 going at once.

Do you have a favorite time of the day and/or place to read?

My favorite time to read is during lunch at work. I camp-out in the corner of my private office and have a little carpet picnic. It feels totally wrong to have a carpet picnic at work, and that is probably why I love it so.

  1. Netherland doesn't have chapters? Huh. that's funny because I just read that one (still haven't written about it) and I didn't even notice it didn't have chapters. Maybe because it was a vacation read and I was able to read it for longer stretches of time than I normally get to do.

  2. I love the thought of your carpet picnic at work! 😀

It's interesting that you love The Last Dickens more than Drood, as I've heard so many reviewers saying the opposite. I guess I'll have to see for myself, huh? I want to read both anyway! 😀

  3. okay this meme is a little different. The $64,000 question…..do you organize your books?? LOL (now don't make me feel bad here Ti!

  4. Diane – I place them neatly on the shelf but they are not categorized at ALL. I am much more organized when it comes to my virtual bookshelf via Goodreads or Library Thing.

  5. I can't deal with other people's scribbles, but sometimes mine are OK. Unless it's been a long time since I scribbed, then it seems like someone else did it.

Love Pratchett, but his non-chapters drive me crazy!!

  6. I read in my car at work. My office is so small and my coworkers wouldn't respect that I wasn't on the clock.

I admit, I will occasionally make a small pencil mark in the margins of a book if I want to quote something. I erase them though.

  7. Love your answers! Northanger Abbey is the only Jane Austen book I haven't read. I keep meaning too but forget to buy it! I go through the same thing with moods and books so I tend to read a few at a time. Nice to have choices, right? A carpet picnic in your private office at work sounds slightly decadent and lovely, like something you know you probably shouldn't do but there's no way you can't do it! Wonderful!

  8. Great answers! At any given time, I have at least three or four books going (one audio for me, one audio with kids in car, hard book for me, hard book with kids). And strangely, nothing gets confusing! It basically means that no matter what I am doing, I am reading a book!

  9. A carpet picnic sounds like fun! And the kids can't interrupt your reading at work 🙂

No chapters, huh? I didn't know that about Netherland; that might throw me!

  10. What's really funny is that I haven't seen one person (including myself) who did this meme mention the bathroom as a favorite place to read! :–)

  11. I am glad to hear you are enjoying The Last Dickens. I hope to get started on that one early next month. I haven't read Drood yet, but I do want to. I'm waiting for it to come out in paperback though. I look forward to hearing what you think of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I want to read that one as well.

I love the idea of your carpet picnic at lunch! I wish I had an office of my own. Sometimes finding a quiet spot where I can get away to read can be difficult at the office. I can't stay at my desk or else no one would let me have any quiet time.
