The Sunday Salon: Another Day of Reading

It’s been a very busy week. My mind is having to get used to the work/come home/cook dinner/schoolwork routine and I’m not quite there yet. The kids’ work is manageable and they do some of it in daycare but getting them to do some when they get home, when they are tired and when I am tired has been a challenge. The only thing that keeps me grounded is reading. Escaping to another place and time is very comforting when the world is seemingly out of control.

That said, I spent most of yesterday reading. I finished The Angel’s Game and I hope to have that review up sometime tomorrow. I am almost done with The Danish Girl and I have to say, that it is an intriguing read. I cannot put it down. There’s something forbidden about it and yet I can totally relate to the characters. I’m really enjoying it. As for the books above…I plan to get to them today after The Danish Girl.

On a personal note, I had to hit the lab for a blood draw yesterday and the phlebotomist did something to my arm and it’s killing me all the way up to my shoulder. Of course, Oprah’s recent segment on flesh eating bacteria has me a tad concerned.

What are you doing this Sunday? Are you enjoying the fair? Are you sinking your teeth into a good book? Do tell.

  1. I think I hate the kids' homework almost as much as they do! It's one of the reasons I hate for summer to end.

  2. Can't wait to hear your review of The Angel's Game. I hope your flesh is not eaten by bacteria, but if it is you maybe could write it up as the Zombie Blogger Chronicles and make lots of money! And if it doesn't, I hope you feel better soon!

  3. I'll be very interested what you think of The Last Dickens. I want to read Drood, and wondering if it would be wise to add The Last Dickens as companion to Drood.

I'm reading 2666 right now.. intriguing but not sure where it's leading to yet.

Also, I'm excited that you got your Persephone catalogue! Do let me know which ones you're looking to read first! šŸ˜€

  4. Well that is one routine that I don't have to worry about any more since both of my kids are gone to school now. I just hate it when those medical people hurt you…I hope your arm feels better soon. Happy Sunday reading!

  5. I need to step away from the computer and go read while the day is young. I'm in the middle of a Murakami book and it's very good.

  6. I'm with Lit and Life — I have enough trouble remembering my own tasks, never mind the kids' schoolwork. The lazy days of summer are right up my alley, especially this year when my kids were eager to read tons of books.

  7. my hubby and i cleaned our bedroom from top to bottom in preparation for painting next weekend! i rewarded myself, after 3 hours of work, with 2 hours of reading! i'm doing laundry and baking cookies and scones for the week ahead. i've got my nose in laws of harmony–another blogger suggested it and i'm enjoying it! šŸ™‚ happy sunday…i don't have to go back to work until 9/10. yay!

  8. Blood draws: if they puncture the vein incorrectly, you bleed a bit inside and it makes you hurt a lot all up and down your arm. I had it happen to me twice this summer and I could feel it from my shoulder blades to my knuckles. It's horrible. I hope you feel better soon.

Like I said on FB, I've heard such good things about the Danish Girl, and now I want to read it more than ever!

  9. The beginning of the school year is so exhausting, but I'm sure you'll all adjust soon. I spent the morning finishing Burnt Shadows.

  10. I swear I've had more homework this past week than the kids. OK, it's just been reading and signing their class prospecti (is that the plural of prospectus?) but it has seemingly been endless. I'm also tired of my initials already after initialling so many daily agendas. šŸ˜›

So I took today for lazing about and reading something so light and insubstantial that I will be happy to get back to heavier reading when I finish it later tonight!

  11. You have some great books there this week: Of Bees and Mist and the Christmas one appeal to me. Also, the Sarah Waters book sounds great to. I just started following you blog–it's great. Not sure how I missed it this long??

  12. It must be that time of year again. Schools are starting up here too. I can usually tell by the increase in my workload an the masses of kids on the streets when I'm driving home from work. šŸ™‚

I look forward to reading your thoughts on The Angel's Game. That's one I really want to read. I picked up a copy of The Danish Girl a few months ago, but haven't read it yet.

I hope your arm feels better soon. There really is an art to drawing blood properly.

My Sunday has been relatively quiet. Trying to mentally prepare for the work week.

Have a great week and feel better soon.

  13. We went to the fair yesterday, but I decided to post pictures next week because I already had such a long Sunday post.

One of my boys starts school this week, the other next week, so I'll get so see very soon how our schedule works out. The nice thing is it seems like it will be a lot like it was last year.
