Guernsey Meeting Update

The other day I posted my review of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and as I mentioned in my review, I didn’t care for it too much. Although it was not an official pick for the book group that I belong to, many of us wanted to read it and so we met tonight to discuss it.

Of the members that came for the discussion, I would have to say that most were very pleased with the book. They found it to be a charming, pleasant read and they found the format to be very readable. Some agreed somewhat with my take on Juliet but they all agreed that the story pulled them in. However, there was one member who didn’t like the book at all but she didn’t come for the discussion so I have no idea why!

It is hard to be the only one who didn’t like it though. I ended up being “the hater” and really, my reaction to the book was not like that. It was just sort of …eh (insert shoulder shrug). Thanks to all that commented on the review. You all had such wonderful comments and I was so worried about getting slammed for not liking it.

The Sunday Salon: February 22, 2009

Everyone loves a rock star right? I spent the entire day yesterday sitting and reading. That’s hard to do with children in the house so my son gave his old iPod Shuffle to his sis and off she went. She was gone for awhile. After about 30 minutes of her not requesting a fruit snack or juice box I went looking for her. I found her on the stairs, decked out in rock star garb and rocking out to her iPod. Here’s what I said:

Me: Hey! You look like Axl Rose!

Her: Who’s Aska Rose???

I was tempted to play some Guns N’ Roses for her but instead she rocked out to the Jonas Brothers (those adorable little moppets that I want to put in my pocket). I walked away thinking what I would have done at the age of five to have something even remotely close to an iPod. All I can recall is the radio and an old fashioned tape recorder that I used to tape songs FROM the radio. Remember that? I know I can’t be the only one that did that.

As for today, I was scheduled to sleep in a bit but then forgot that my daughter and I planned to cook breakfast this morning. So I dragged myself out of bed to make eggs and turkey bacon. It was delish! She is rocking out to her iPod again and I am still in my jammies! Not for long though because today I have a lovely day of girl things planned.

I am going to a Body Shop party where we get to soak our feet and try all the new stuff. Yes, it’s the same as the shop in the mall but they come to you! If you haven’t had one of these parties you should. They are so much fun. Afterward, my girlfriend and I are going to dinner and a movie. The movie? We plan to see Confessions of a Shopaholic. It’s based on the Kinsella book. It looks cute to me and I want something funny.

As for reading. I am reading The Sum of Our Days by Isabel Allende and also Drood by Dan Simmons. Both of which I am enjoying so far. I have another book that I am reading for my book group, Dreams From My Father but I am reading that right before I go to bed. I have so many that I need to read and I am trying to fit them all in.

Well, I better get off of here and get dressed. I really don’t want to as it is gloomy and about to rain (love it) but I don’t think my girlfriends would appreciate me showing up to this party looking like I just rolled out of bed.

What do you have planned for today?
