The Sunday Salon: Eatin’ and Readin’

Today is Oscar Sunday. I love the Oscars. Actually, I love the red carpet stuff more but this year, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are hosting so you know it’s going to be fun. PLUS, it’s a reason to make some really good eats and just hang-out. So, I am making a wonderful seafood chowder with a crusty loaf of french bread for dipping, and because my daughter got hit with some weird bug, I am also making homemade chicken noodle soup for her. It’s the only thing that makes her feel better.

On a reading note, I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately. When my computer was on the fritz, I was forced to schedule posts and you know what? Because everything was scheduled, I managed to get a lot more reading in. That sort of surprised me but I guess being without a computer forced me to budget my time better.

Yesterday, I finished If You Follow Me, which is for a book tour later this month. I also hit the bookstore to buy The Dead and the Gone but they didn’t have it in stock (the story of my life). This disappointed me because it poured Saturday and would have been the perfect day for a book like that. So instead, I picked up my copy of The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott which I am reading for this reading series. Sounds like fun, huh?

Today, since my little one is not feeling well and has attached herself to my side, I plan to spend the day on the couch with a pile of books. Hopefully she’ll be up to watching the Oscars with me later.

Oh, and in case you missed it, I’m giving away a SIGNED copy of Impatient with Desire. Click here for details. I also received an invite to the Impatient with Desire book party, straight from the author no less! I am going to try to attend but weekday events are brutal for me. I’m crossing my fingers though.

Thank you Ms. Burton!

What are you up to today?

  1. Hi Ti,
The L.A. events are both on Friday nights so hope you can make one. Maybe you can mention my dates on your blog. It’s important for readers to attend bookstore readings and signings, because these kind of events are really being phased out. The cost benefit for publishers isn’t worth it, but what’s being left out of this equation is the fate of the independent bookstore. Readings bring in people. They might buy a book that night, or not, but it’s likely that some will come back to that store. People gathering in bookstores to hear literature is a wonderful tradition and cultural event which like the independent bookstore itself is in danger. It’s hard to compete with Amazon’s prices but let’s try to buy local and visit local.
You and your daughter curled up on the couch watching Oscars–that is a perfect Sunday.
    All best,
    Gabrielle Burton

  2. Hey, Ti, re my above comment, I responded directly on my email and when this posted, I see you’ve already printed the actual invite. That’s great–though the dates & times are hard to see. They’re on my website if someone’s interested.
    Best,
    Gabrielle

    1. I plan to post a separate post about the events and also include some info on the Festival of Books. I noticed your name on the author list for that event as well.

  3. I love the Oscars for the red carpet stuff as well. So hope to watch at least some of that, and do some book organizing and reading.

Hope your daughter feels better soon; have a fun day Ti.

  4. Hope that your little one feels better! The seafood chowder and crusty bread sound very yummy.

How exciting to be invited to the book party – hope that you are able to make it!

  5. I’m hoping to start If You Follow Me for a tour later today. I’m really looking forward to it!

I’m excited for the Oscars tonight too!

    Happy Sunday!

  6. I love the Oscars too, but since my cable company and ABC are having a dispute over $, ABC actually stopped broadcasting with my cable company TODAY! Can you believe it? Looks like I’ll be missing out tonight! 😦

  7. So sorry Ti, little girl is not feeling well. I have a bit of an “off” tummy and hoping it doesn’t get worse. The Oscars are a hit for me too, but no one else around her could care less–except that hubs will walk through the room occasionally and stop to watch if something good is happening. We have to take Sam to ensemble practice in Tacoma and will be gone from 2:30 until 7:00, but hopefully I will get to watch some of it.
Regarding books: I am jealous you have The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott. I so want to get my hands on a copy of that one. As far as scheduling posts, I have done that a bit myself lately and I really like it. Sometimes I am just too shot after work to work up any desire to be on the computer and be creative.
Hope you have a great evening–
    *smiles*

  8. I’m sorry to hear that your little one is sick. I hope she’s feeling better soon.

My husband and I were chatting the other day, trying to figure out when the Oscars were. It’s not like we couldn’t look it up online or anything, but we figure it must be this weekend because there’s been so much Oscar buzz. It’s good to know that it is indeed on this weekend. 🙂

  9. I’ve seen a lot of the Oscar nominated movies this year, but the awards just don’t interest me. I love that you got an invitation right from the author and I totally agree with her comment.

  10. I’m watching the Oscars but haven’t seen many of the films. I usually make a list of films I want to read after watching the Oscars.

Hoping that you get to enjoy the show and your daughter is feeling bettter.

That is wonderful that you were invited to an author event by the author. I hope that you can make it. I wish that we had more author signings and a book festival in the area would be wonderful.

  11. Hope your daughter feels better soon. Getting homemade chicken soup should do the trick!

And I used to be so into the Oscars but I haven’t really watched them for the past few years.

  12. I think this is the first year in several years that I didn’t watch the Oscars. I did receive all the “Breaking News!” alerts from the L.A. Times through e-mail though. I hope your daughter is feeling better.

I had hoped to read today but that didn’t work out. We had company over and then I had to take advantage of the lack of rain to walk the dog. I’m going to curl up with my book in a few minutes and read before falling asleep.

I hope you have a great week, Ti!
