Under This Unbroken Sky by Shandi Mitchell

Friday Finds is hosted by Should Be Reading.
Here is the blurb from the publisher:
Spring 1938. After nearly two years in prison for the crime of stealing his own grain, Ukrainian immigrant Teodor Mykolayenko is a free man. While he was gone, his wife, Maria; their five children; and his sister, Anna, struggled to survive on the harsh northern Canadian prairie, but now Teodor—a man who has overcome drought, starvation, and Stalin’s purges—is determined to make a better life for them. As he tirelessly clears the untamed land, Teodor begins to heal himself and his children. But the family’s hopes and newfound happiness are short-lived. Anna’s rogue husband, the arrogant and scheming Stefan, unexpectedly returns, stirring up rancor and discord that will end in violence and tragedy.
Under This Unbroken Sky is a mesmerizing tale of love and greed, pride and desperation, that will resonate long after the last page is turned. Shandi Mitchell has woven an unbearably suspenseful story, written in a language of luminous beauty and clarity. Rich with fiery conflict and culminating in a gut-wrenching climax, this is an unforgettably powerful novel from a passionate new voice in contemporary literature.
A friend of mine on Facebook added it to his Goodreads list and it immediately caught my eye. It’s also a Barnes and Noble Discover pick. I love the cover too.
Did you find anything really good this week?
I read this. In spite of the bleakness of the setting and story, it wasn’t bleak reading at all; it’s very good.
The cover is gorgeous, it makes me want to know what’s inside the book. I love a book that resonates “long after the last page is turned”. On the list it goes!
Beautiful cover, great find. Mine are at The Crowded Leaf.
I have this one on my wish list as well. It does sound sad but good.
Even the title speaks to me. The one book that I thought sounded interesting was one called Bloodroot by Amy Greene, which was reviewed in EW last week.
I read that review on Bloodroot. It does look good!
I’ve had my eye on this one, too!
I remember thinking that I would like this book to.
I have this one on my shelf to read. I’ve heard such great things about it.
This is an awesome read. I just realized that I posted a review on Library Thing, but never did on my blog. I’ll have to post it. Thanks for the reminder. 🙂
This is a good book. Shandi Mitchell does a great job making you feel like part of the story.
I have an award for you Ti!

There’s a video at the end of her review.
I haven’t heard of this before but it sounds perfect for me. Takes place on the prairies – it would be familiar for me for sure.
I have it my TBR pile. Will get around it soon.
