A Little Late In the Game

Better late than never, right? I JUST now picked up The Hunger Games. I know! The entire planet has already read it. I’ve had it for a long time but didn’t plan to read it until later in the year. However, I had some down time to fill and grabbed it and I am loving it.

The university that I work for is considering it for their Freshman Common Reading panel, which is a school’s version of One City, One Book. I thought that was interesting. Just out of curiosity, do you think this would make a good book for college students to discuss all year-long? I am only about fifty pages in so I can’t say.

  1. I think you could discuss this book for an extended period of time. It isn’t all that complex, and for that reason, I hesitate to say whether it be worthy of a YEAR long discussion. Maybe a semester? Enjoy the book! I think it is hilarious and serendipitous that you are reading about hunger at a time like this!

  2. Just had to chime in and say that I too have not read this yet. It really doesn’t interest me but I’ve promised several friends that I WILL eventually read it – I’m just waiting for the series to be complete. šŸ™‚

  3. I haven’t read it yet either, but I’ve heard lots about it. I don’t know how much discussion you could get out if it, but it’s probably a book the students would enjoy.

  4. I think an entire year on this book is possible…there are politics to discuss about dictatorships, communism, socialism, etc. disenfranchisement, and a number of other social constructs.

I hope you are enjoying it. I loved that book.

  5. I loved The Hunger Games (although I haven’t finished the sequel, Catching Fire, yet). I think there’s plenty to discuss about the book and a lot of topics to learn about based on the book. I agree with Sandy that it’s probably better for a semester rather than a full year.

I hope you enjoy reading it!

  6. Don’t feel bad, Ti; I haven’t read it either. For some reason, I’ve dug my heels in on this one and really don’t have any desire to read it. Maybe you can change my mind!

  7. I haven’t read it either Ti…there are quite a few of us who have commented here. I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy dystopian fiction. I have it ready for me to pick up at the library so I hope to read it soon. I’ll be interested in your thoughts.

  8. Hi Ti & Happy New Year!!! I just put THE HUNGER GAMES on my Friday Finds draft for tomorrow. I have the sample downloaded on my Kindle so I hope to get to it this year. As you (and all book bloggers know) “so many books, so little time!” šŸ™‚
