Friday Finds: The Island at the End of the World

The Island at the End of the World

The Island at the End of the World by Sam Taylor

Friday Finds

Friday Finds is hosted by Should Be Reading.

Here is the blurb from the publisher:

A chilling post-apocalyptic tale of how far a father will go to protect his children-from the author of The Amnesiac

In a world nearly destroyed by catastrophic floods, one family has been spared. Many years ago, as the waters rose, a father and his three children took to their ark and drifted to the safety of a small island. Life there is a quiet idyll of music and farming-and young Alice, Finn, and Daisy are grateful for their salvation-until the day a stranger swims ashore. A terrifyingly plausible adventure story, The Island at the End of the World is a mesmerizing novel from an exciting new writer.

I’m not sure what to think about this one. Many have given it a so-so review yet I am intrigued. There are so many books out right now about the end of the world but for whatever reason I am so taken with them. Must be my dark side coming out again. Have you read this one? If so, what did you think of it? Is it book club worthy?

  1. I’m impressed by the cover too. I think there just happen to be a lot of books out now involving end-of-the-world scenarios, so it’s inevitable that some of them should seem worth reading.

  2. I’m intrigued too. First I like the title and then the whole take on Noah’s Ark. I’m also with Nat – sometimes the books everyone else dislikes actually become my favorites. It’s that allure of march to a different drummer.

  3. I’d pick it up for the cover alone. It’s kinda scarey and confusing, but it caught my attention. Anything nowadays that does not have a lady’s headless bosom on the cover is a very good thing.

  4. This is the first I have heard of this book, so I will have to be on the look out for reviews. I’ll be interested to see what people think of it.

    1. I sort of want to see 2012 too. It’s my dark, fatalistic side that wants to see it. Oh, and John Cusack being in it doesn’t hurt either.
